It's coming and they didn't have a choice because of the nexus 7, granted they probably knew they're main competitor was going retina long ago enough to already have their supply chain ready for this fall.

Competition is a win for all of us

iPad mini with Retina will happen autumn 2013 because go Nexus7/Google.

Heck it may well have the Fingerprint safety/log-in technology. Apple's gotta have something to be ahead/differentiated.

I feel like it might be prudent to release both retina and non-retina displays for a generation, both for cost reasons and price points-- obviously the non-retina could be sold for a lower price to compete with similarly lower-priced tablets.

I don't think rumours affect sales that much.
Right now the Nexus 7 is up against the iPad Mini which doesn't have a high resolution screen. That is the fact until Apple changes it.

No, but they affect stock prices. They also do affect sales-- at least a bit. If people are expecting the next model not to be what they're hoping for, they stop holding out for it and buy the competitor's product.

For me, the retina screen is a nice add-on, but I care more about the processor. I want at least an A6, because I routinely tap out the A5 right now. It's just not fast enough.

So Apple didn't plan to release a retina mini this year until they saw the Nexus 7. And then boom just like that they're able to crank 'em out in time for the holidays? Wow I guess Cook really is a supply chain and engineering genius.

Very simple:
New iPad Mini RETINA = Apple gets my $$$$
"New" iPad Mini NO RETINA = Apple WON'T get my $$$

Retina or not, that's the question.

The thing to be careful about is the wording. Unless Apple is planning to just skip a year they wouldn't still be 'working on' the iPad Mini at this point. They would be locking it down now to go into production within the next few weeks.

So if they are working on the next iPad Mini at this point it is the very early stages of the Fall 2014 release.

This news is obviously inaccurate. We have been told by many people on these boards and on other Apple enthusiast sites that this technology is currently IMPOSSIBLE. How can we reconcile this story with all of those lengthy mind-numbing analyses?

I'd rather have fast graphics than a retina display.

Me too. Given that the iPad Mini is already like 70-80% to Retina and looks rather good if you aren't a spec snob

I would say these things are more important than a Retina Display

1. Faster more stable general processor
2. Faster more stable graphics processor
3. More storage
4. More RAM
5. Cameras with better light sensitivity and better zoom
6. Better sound both input and output
7. 802.11 AC with adhoc wifi support (so I can connect directly to say an Apple TV even if there's no actual Internet connected network around)
8. Better brightness and brightness control especially for working outside
9. Better screen sensitivity for handwriting with finger or stylus
10. Less glare
11. Better coatings to avoid picking up oils etc, and better ease of cleaning
12. Glass that is more durable to scratches and drops
13. Buttons that don't get smashed to death in four months
14. (This one is for all ioads). Modular repair form including replacing those buttons, broken glass, batteries etc. I know many folks will be like 'whatever' but if you have to pay for an out of warranty repair cause you didn't get apple care plus having to pay say $100 for a new screen rather than $200 for a whole new unit over a giant scratch from your keys makes more sense. Not having to spend two hours setting up a unit new over that screen or a button or a camera etc is good for many of us.

I would also like to see them change up Apple Care to either the period to buy it a big longer and make phone support free for the whole basic year. I wouldn't mind Apple hooking up with a company to provide loss/theft insurance as well. Not part of Apple Care perhaps but something where you could sign up at Apple, go to them for the replacement. Maybe the same with phones.

I would also like to see them provide more how to stuff on their site to stop folks from coming in for a tech appointment to basically get a class. Plus at least in the US there is nothing that says how long the appointments are, makes clear that most phone techs can't do computers also etc. I'm in the stores a lot and I hear all kinds of stuff like 'I didn't know it was only one device' or 'nothing said I would be cancelled if I was late' or (my fav) 'what do you mean you can't tell me my (service not remotely related to apple) password'. They get so much traffic now they need to revamp and streamline and get folks to not have to go into stores or not turn up for things that Apple can't do

Great, 3 different screen manufacturers to ensure adequate supply

This translates to another go around in the Apple screen lottery process. Each manufacturer's screen will be slightly different and some inferior to others.

Typically, the LG/Sharp panels are superior to the Samsung ones so I am guessing the people that get these will have slightly better displays than the Samsung panels.

I don't know about you guys but I would rather have a limited supply at launch with consistent, quality displays being produced as opposed to a surplus at launch with a mixture of sub-par panels thrown in there.

Then again, the latter is what will happen because it is how :apple: generates the biggest profit.

SMH if you believe they felt the need to make any statement to correct purportedly false rumors.

Well TBH I don't think Apple felt a "need" to but at the same time felt it would make a difference in doing so.

What I mean is I agree with you but I also feel that Apple wanted to at least plant the seed that a retina model "May" be coming to at least slow people from buying a competitor WITH a retina display now rather then wait for the fall release.

Many people would do just that; buy a competing tablet with a retina display NOW if there was nothing coming from Apple in the fall with a similar display, why wait.

And honestly, good on Apple. I was seriously going to purchase a new Nexus 7 because of this very reason, until I saw this!

THIS ^ X People ALL OVER THE GLOBE

THIS is EXACTLY WHY Apple leaked comment to its fav source WSJ to put out.

Apple knew the retina display was in the minds of everyone waiting for the refresh and with the N7 coming out WITH and the rumor of the next mini coming out WITHOUT there was a real wave if panic rising in the waiting masses.

For example, myself, completely tied into the Apple ecosystem and a huge fan, would consider adding a G7 to my lineup now until the retina came out in the spring of '14 if that were the case. I would still get the new iPad 5 but I would not get the mini 2 and the iPad 5 without a retina in the mini. And since I have been waiting for a retina mini I am ready to buy now.

However, with this release by the WSJ, I have faith in a retina mini in the fall of '13 so I will wait and see.

Am I the only person in the entire world that wants/wishes the 3G ipad/mini allowed voice/texts/etc?
I don't hold much hope if I am :)

Samsung displays are the best...check LG displays of rMBP for ghosting etc

of course....that's why all those people were returning their rMBP with LG panels in hopes of getting one with a Samsung panel.

there are lulls for several months prior to the expected release date of new iterations. Many people are smart enough to understand the yearly cycle and thusly hold off purchases.

This is not an example of a rumor.

Also, it is a person waiting to buy one Apple product and not another. So not really a problem for Apple.

Generally, not enough people have awareness of a rumor for it to get real traction.

But products on shelves have real impact.

So when the Nexus 7 actually arrives it will matter what Apple has available at that moment to go against it.

"The next iPad mini isn't going to have a retina display. Oh, never mind, it will! ACTUALLY, never mind, it won't. ACTUALLY..."

No, but rumors during the lull do matter. It can be the difference between someone waiting or pulling the trigger on a competing device.

I agree, products on shelves have real impact, which is why it was critical for Apple to leak this information about the forthcoming Mini. Currently, Nexus 7 is available and $100 cheaper than the Mini with a superior screen. Your "when" is actually "now".

I'm hoping for a retina mini as well. I was ready to get the iPad 5, if there was no retina mini released this year. My main complaint with the current and previous iPads was the weight and a weight reduction to 1 pound may have been enough. However, I still had a feeling that I would be more satisfied with a retina mini when it comes to usability and portability. The specs from the iPad 4 (A6X, retina, etc.) in the mini would make it a really good portable gaming device. Maybe they could even slap a A7 in there.
