The next mini is expected to have Oled. Not sure what real advantage 120hz will have on a small screen.
… then what's the advantage of 120hz on an iPhone screen? People seem to like that a lot… also remember all the bitching about "jelly scrolling"?

It seems like there's usually 3 years between iPad Mini releases, so this seems to be coming a little fast… but if they're finally putting OLED in the damned things* then that would explain the push.

* my favorite Apple product, always buy the new version immediately, iPad Mini is my girlfriend

If the iPad Mini is getting the A19 Pro chip, so should the new low-price MacBook that’s currently rumored to get the A18 Pro.

I’m a bit confused. If Apple releases a foldable iPhone next year, it would overlap heavily with the iPad mini. And since the iPhone Pro models already feature OLED with ProMotion, the iPad mini’s place in the lineup seems even more uncertain. Interestingly, a recent rumor also suggests that Apple is developing a stylus that doesn’t require a touch panel.

This leaves a couple of possible options:
– A foldable iPhone
– A regular iPhone paired with an iPad mini

Personally, I’d rather carry a single device than juggle multiple ones.
The price definitely won’t overlap. Under 1K vs close to 3K. The iPad mini has found its place with a lot of people who won’t find a folding iPhone close to 3K as a viable/economical alternative.

120hz should be mandatory at those price points!
Hideous displays in comparison to ANY tablet at that price.
faster CPU is not necessary for iPad mini but this drives planned obsolescence. If only Apple would put decent displays in non-pro devices.
I hate the display on my iPad mini but my iPad Pro 12.9 is too heavy.

A17Pro is plenty quick for anything you can throw at it. Need more oomph? Get a Pro.

What the mini needs is: 1. A better screen (120hz, preferably OLED) and 2. longer battery life. The mini should be a perfect little sidekick for note taking, reading and quick reference that you can just chuck in your bag.

Put out a mini for ~650 with a good screen and proper battery and you got yourself a real winner.

Also for the "whattabout iphone fold". Consider this. I use my mini for work. Note taking, quick reference, and light work. When I am with a client, customer or supplier nobody bats an eye when I am on the mini using my pencil.

I guarantee you I will not get the same response if I do the same on a phone. using an ipad all day is pretty well respected / ignored. Being on your phone all day makes you look like a tick tack toe addicted teenager.

I think it will be updated in April along with other iPads. Not expecting much to change with the new one. OLED might not be coming immediately.

I don’t understand your couple of possible options part?

The Pro version of the A19 will have more GPU cores than the standard A19, and rumors suggest there will also be an in-between version that's a binned A19 Pro with one fewer GPU core. The binned chips could be used in the iPhone 17 Air.
I thought the Pro chip also had a load more cache than the non-pro chip...

Wikipedia suggests A18 Pro has 16 MB for the performance cores, 4 MB for the efficiency cores and 24 MB system level cache, with the A18 only getting 8 MB for the performance cores and 12 MB sytem level cache.

What are premium features now?
Is that supposed to be some sort of counter argument against the idea that FaceID, OLED and 120 Hz aren't premium features to any extend of the imagination? Apple can limit what for every other manufacturer is a basic feature in even their cheapest phones to their premium models all they want, doesn't make it a premium feature, though.

I’ve been meaning to get the current mini but now I’m wondering if I should hold out. I did this last time and didn’t end up buying the current mini so I think I should just do it instead of holding out each time.
