This is a nice rumor to read. I'm considering combining my iPhone + iPad Mini uses with the foldable iPhone. However, if the foldable has a dealbreaker issue for me or I don't want to pay the foldable premium at the time, I may continue with the iPhone + iPad Mini combo.

It not costing $2000+ is one reason
You might want to rethink your math - if you get the iPhone Max and an iPad mini, you will for sure be in the $1500-$1700 price range. At that point an iPhone Fold is not much of a stretch, especially on a three year carrier contract, and you can now live the one device life.

And PLEASE no "gimmicky" comments from the back bench folks - if you have not seen what is truly possible, get down to the store and check out the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 - with iOS 26 I'd be on top of it in a heartbeat.

Is that supposed to be some sort of counter argument against the idea that FaceID, OLED and 120 Hz aren't premium features to any extend of the imagination? Apple can limit what for every other manufacturer is a basic feature in even their cheapest phones to their premium models all they want, doesn't make it a premium feature, though.
I don't care personally. OP said those aren't premium features, so I was curious to know what specific features OP thought should distinguish Pro from regular iPads--that simple. What's your opinion on that?

(edited- changed “iPhones” to “iPads”)

I majorly won the mini 6 screen lottery. It was brighter and had less jelly scroll than my mini 7 does. I'm pretty sure my 6 had better battery life, too. The 7 has been a disappointment all around, compared to my 6.

It's so frustrating.
I with they'd go all in on an iPad Mini "Pro" or w/e and put a legit beautiful screen on there.

It's all made worse by how infrequently they update the Mini.

Last night I was reading my iPhone 16 Pro Max in bed and I thought... You know, an iPad mini would make sense here.

I've had three iPads now (current is an iPad Air 5th generation, with the M1 chip). And I've never, ever found a use for them. I just use my MacBook Pro for everything. The iPad Air is like a spare that sometimes I take on holiday in lieu of a laptop.

But suddenly, I'm starting to think an iPad mini makes sense. Lighter weight, so not as fatiguing to hold when using. More personal, because it's smaller. But also bigger than the iPhone. Nice just for using Apple News, Kindle app, or YouTube videos.

Has anybody made the switch from iPad Air to mini? What was your thinking, and how did it work out?

i absolutely love my iPad mini 6, i use it all the time especially when travelling (its great for short haul flights to watch a film/TV show).

perfect size (for not taking up too much space in bags and for holding in one hand).

i love the pencil for taking notes (i think someone earlier mentioned you can use it in meetings without anyone being suspicious you're just on your phone), and i have a wifi only as i like to not be distracted by things that a cellular connection enables!

i have an older logitech keys to go keyboard (which is so slim it takes up so little space) if i am away for longer and think i need to type a lot.

i have a macbook pro for day to day working and that's great but i love the ease of the mini and the portability. i didn't upgrade to a 7 as i only saw an incremental improvement.

if they keep it the same size again and make the screen that much better i'd be on board.

Well, my iPad mini 7 is my daily driver and I love it! It has 326 ppi which means that a nearsighted person like I am, the 326 ppi is more crisper and sharper for reading than an iPad with less ppi like all the other iPads have. I can notice this difference! In March I bought the iPad Air 13“ inch, M3. A very good tablet! And sometimes my daily driver too. I switch around between the mini and the Air. But if I had to choose, I would take the mini. But: Both tablets compliment each other very well! The mini is the smaller version of the iPad Air with better ppi on the mini. But for my taste the 13“ inch Air I find sometimes too big. I‘m eyeing a 11“ inch iPad Air for my next purchase. But I‘m also going back and forth if my next choice should be LCD or Oled. I‘m a big fan of LCD, because I find the colors more natural and not that oversaturated sometimes, like on Oleds..
We‘ll see, what Apple will have in store for us next year. And the big iPad Air I will gift to my parents then.🙂
By the way: The 13“ inch Air didn‘t make it any better for me to read. The lesser ppi and nearsightedness, I caught myself hanging on the screen like sometimes on my mini. So, it is the problem of nearsightedness and not a bigger screen. I feel very comfortable with the smaller screen of the mini. But I would love to see a 9“ inch mini next time.🙂
But watching movies on the Air is really cool, cause of the bigger screen.
And again: Both tablets, the mini and the 13“ inch Air, compliment each other very well!! To have both is just so fine!!
Oh, and I use my iPads without any keyboards. I don‘t want that stuff.🙂
And yes: The form factor of the mini is unbeatable! I love it a lot for that!

For starters iPad Mini will cost between quarter and third price of the rumor iPhone Fold. Also many prefer to use a separate device for couch surfing, reading, light daily tasks and iPad Mini is perfect for this.
This applies to me. There’s something about the iPad where it doesn’t have as much of the notifications and distractions as my phone.

I’m a bit confused. If Apple releases a foldable iPhone next year, it would overlap heavily with the iPad mini. And since the iPhone Pro models already feature OLED with ProMotion, the iPad mini’s place in the lineup seems even more uncertain. Interestingly, a recent rumor also suggests that Apple is developing a stylus that doesn’t require a touch panel.

This leaves a couple of possible options:
– A foldable iPhone
– A regular iPhone paired with an iPad mini

Personally, I’d rather carry a single device than juggle multiple ones.
I personally love the iPad mini form factor. I have zero desire for a giant, or foldable phone.

Different use cases.

Wish apple would release a small phone again. The 13 mini that I'm going to use until it's orphaned is even too big.

M-series chips instead of A-series, tandem OLED, 120hz refresh (OLED is no guarantee that it won't be 60hz)
Oh yeah those are the iPad’s premium features currently, but I was asking OP what they considered premium because OP said things like 120Hz shouldn’t be considered premium.

I like everything about my Mini 7 except the lack of FaceID. Going from my 16PM to the iPad, I often find myself staring at it like an idiot waiting for it to recognize me. C'mon Tim, let's make FaceID happen!
Same here love my iPad Mini 7 (Cellular), though face-id would've better. I'm content, it's my first iPad ,and I'll keep for a at least 4 years. The size and weight really can't be beat especially when travelling.

I'm with rappr, with trade in, $400 US, I don't need my main device, to be my phone and cost a fortune. I use a pixel 7 PRO, for my phone, it only cost $275 US, new phones, are a rip off, second hand, get 128GB of flash, 12GB of lpddr5. An iPad mini, that's affordable and has the latest chip, for a third, of the price, of the latest iPhone, yes thank you.

2nm, more tops.

Yup, face ID and finger print recognition, on my Pixel 7 PRO, less hassle. But I do love my iPad mini 7, I put my reading glasses on and it's a dream. If I'm on the road, I can catch the latest Star Trek, with such speed and clarity.

I had 1st gen, 3rd gen, and 5th gen Minis and loved them all.

But last year when I was looking to upgrade again $500 for the Mini with A17 compared to $600 for the 11-inch Air with M2, I switched to the Air with no regrets.

I think everyone understands you have to accept concessions with the Mini, but at this point the value proposition is really bad. Like you have to be buying the Mini ONLY for it's form factor at this point, and not considering anything else at all, in order to find the Mini appealing.

I find the iPad mini 7, does photo processing beautifully, I put my reading glasses on, it's still a lot of work, but elegant. I get the appeal, of the M2 chip though, I have the M4 Mac mini, with 16GB of unified memory and 38 tops, for my about the same, price as your iPad Air.
