we don't need iPads with glass backs. iPads are already impossible to repair, Apple just gives you a new one when the screen breaks for example.

Glass backs are very easy to break, specially in something so large as an iPad, also more expensive.

And all that just for wireless charging, when USB-C charging is more efficient and easier?

Seems a gimmick to sell accessories and increase the price
I’d also worry about any weight implications. iPhone 5 got very noticeably lighter compared to the iPhone 4 and I suspect that was in large part due to the switch from glass to metal for the back. I’d hate to see any upward trend on the iPad weights just for a feature that I’m not sure adds much utility. And your other points about durability etc are totally valid IMO.

As long as a glass back wouldn't make the iPad Pro any heavier than it already is, then I'm all for it. I'm also hoping they go with frosted glass to cut down on the number of fingerprints that are going to appear with the switch to a glass back.
Assuming everything else equal, glass back iPad will be heavier than today, unless the glass back is so thin to not increase weight, it becomes insanely fragile.
Of course, there are always alternative ways to enable wireless charging without increasing weight significantly. But glass back… is a recipe for disaster.

Yeah glass back iPad. Apple surely loves to massively upcharge their repair fee. What can go wrong?

I bought an M1 Pro 12.9 earlier this year… prob will be my last ipad as i think Vision Pro will replace most of its use cases eventually. I thought id wind up using the apple pencil to draw stuff a lot more at home but nope.
Give it some time… it took me while to get used to it, but now I draw and write notes with the Apple Pencil all the time.

I use it constantly at work to take photos and draw measurements on top of them , just don't do enough at home where its usage is warranted. and I don't use it to write notes cus im far better and faster at typing versus writing. I think I thought I'd use it more with photoshop or illustrator but those times I have jobs that need it are very rare

I wouldn’t be shocked if we got MagSafe 3 on the iPad Pro. Whenever I’d hear the MagSafe rumors, I always thought the iPhone’s MagSafe didn’t make sense, but the MacBook’s MagSafe makes perfect sense.
I agree that I can't see the use of iPhone style MagSafe charging. In what scenario am I likely to prefer this over wired charging on an iPad? The only times I use iPhone MagSafe are in my car (awesome-this feels like enough of a reason for the technology to exist), and occasionally at my desk I sit my phone on a stand.

I use my iPad for conference calls at my desk, and plug it in. MacBook style MagSafe charging would be a mild improvement for me in this scenario. In general, MacBook style charging would be a useful addition, so that we can attach accessories and charge at the same time, as well as extending the life of the single USB-C port.

If iPhone style MagSafe/Qi were to require an entirely glass back on an iPad (rather than a little circle of glass in the middle of the back), I'd be against it, because it would mean a more fragile device.

What is that MagSafe charger in the photo? Does anyone know the model/brand? Thanks.

Unfortunately I don’t know which charger this is, but I’d love this kind of setup for my iPad. And this is exactly why I think the iPhone version of MagSafe would be great on the iPad. Back when I had my 2nd gen 12.9 iPad Pro, I remember Logitech had a dock that connected to the Smart Connector (I think that was what it was called back then?) on the edge of the iPad, and it made for a nice clean charging solution when it was on my desk, with no wires sticking awkwardly out of the side. When I’m working at my desk I use a Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad, so it’d be nice to be able to dock the iPad like this to clean things up a little with wires.

Plus, it’d be awesome being able to snap a MagSafe battery on the back on the go.

Yes I would love a way to dock and charge, bonus points if it can connect to external display this way. I’m surprised they never made one of those with the modern Smart Connector

I think the Smart Connector would be better. A MagSafe like that would take a long time to add significant charge to an iPad and it would require having an area on the case that had a glass or plastic panel to allow charging. Adding weight and reduced rigidity.

It would be nice just to slap the iPad onto a desktop MagSafe mount, like we attach a phone to a car mount. Maybe they could use slightly stronger magnets or configure it like this with the magnets: -O-

A little round glass cutout in the middle of the back shouldn't wreck the integrity of the device.

It would be nice to simply be able to replace the "infotainment" screens that come standard in most cars nowadays with an iPad.
