Eu legislation states it has to have USB. It's coming

Nope, it doesn't. And USB does not provide enough voltage to charge the device anyway. The EU Legislation on phone chargers relates to phones (funnily enough).

GCC was already present in iOS 4.0 I believe. It's obviously preparation for an eventual multicore iOS device, but it doesn't really mean it's imminent. In addition, Steve Jobs himself said that GCC is targetted at getting better use of 4+ core CPUs, since existing programming techniques are sufficient to make good use of just 2 cores. Apple may want to push heavily on GPU acceleration of general programming needs through OpenCL, which may be more efficient for an embedded device. Certainly there is less baggage of existing code to slow adoption. The SGX545 has support for both the desktop and mobile OpenCL 1.0 profiles. The SGX535 in the A4 and the SGX540 in Samsung's Hummingbird don't support OpenCL at all, and I believe the SGX543 capable of multi-GPU configurations only support OpenCL mobile profile which may be sufficient.

512MB would probably be a certainty. I'd be interested in the type though. The A4 appears to use a 64-bit memory bus (up from 32-bit) to gain more bandwidth, but stuck with LPDDR1. This was probably a safe bet due to supply issues. LPDDR2 is faster and lower power so hopefully it'll be adopted by the A5.

gcd was in earlier releases of ios 4, but it's new for ipad - with ios 4.2

i expect we'll see either a reference cortex a9 with tweaks, only because the praybook is coming out of the gate with that, or yet another a4 processor.

Hmm...instead of USB..

What would you guys think if Apple started putting Lightpeak in iPads? I mean, 2011 could be when LightPeak is put in their products.

I agree that it probably doesn't have to comply with phone regs.

But if it really had to have micro usb for charging, then I could see one on there with just the power parts connected and the standard Apple dock port there too for anything else.

The standard Apple iPad 10W USB Power Adapter seems to have no problem spicing 5V/2A out of a USB socket.

Still I agree that the legislation argument does not make sense as it addresses mobile phones, not iPad or similar devices, see http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/09/301

Isnt it using the usb2 standard high power mode?
They short the data pins with the right resistance and the device then knows it's gets high power. Apples charger should work with any usb2 device.

USB could may well come you never know - so you can connect your flash pen drives to the iPad to transfer documents - perhaps through a new version of iOS. Nevertheless, it would be welcome new features.

Apple is so cool they will "reinvent" the floppy drive by putting it in iPad 2G.

I mean how many old unused floppies are still sitting around in boxes in attics, closets, and basements?

Of course it will be "magical" so instead of stating the obvious, the media punzits will praise the "hip retroness" of the iPad 2G.

But with the 3G Apple will suddenly delete the floppy drive and then everyone will realize it wasn't cool at all. There will be blood on the blogs.....

And ultimately, those with unsellable old 2G models will be forced to upgrade to 3G.

And this approach to "product differentiation" will be taught in all college level business courses as the literal "textbook example" of how to milk a product line for maximum profit.

Apple giveth...and Apple taketh away. :p

WTF are you on man? Apple never took anything away from the iPad, they just never included it. To take something away means that you must've had it in hand before. Apple never personally removed any feature for the ipad 1g. Also why the **** are you still rambling on about floppy disks, move on from 1995 you hippie.

Once again everyone needs to stop using "Retina Display"....IT'S A ****ING MARKETING TERM WITH NO MEANING.

THANK YOU. You could also put "iApp" on that list, and "a day you will never forget". :)

Ok then. What shall I call it? A screen with such high pixel density (300+) that the eye cannot distinguish between the pixels; which, makes it so that the user has crisp text and super sharp *graphics.* However, with apps that haven't been updated then you get the "normal" experience.

What's your problem? It's a marketing term and we know it; would you rather us say *above* instead of "retina" display. We only use it because it is more convenient that saying:

"a screen with 300ppi at a resolution of 2*** x 1*** won't ever come to the iPad" (That's wrong, because if you double the resolution it comes to 250ppi and if you double it again it will go to 370ppi [or something like that])

OR

A retina display won't ever come to the iPad And, as APPLE has told their customers that a "retina display" is a display that you cannot distinguish the pixels - that marketing term is theoretically correct. As, "retina display" could mean 256ppi, at a distance of **; therefore, you cannot see the pixels.

To repeat: We know it is a marketing term, we say it because it more convenient.

We also say "HD" (High Definition); that's a marketing term. So, we all should say: "I have a TV which supports 1920x1080, so it'll be super sharp." What about FaceTime? I've heard, "I just going to FaceTime him!" a few times; obviously that wrong, he should have said: " I am just going to use a feature that allows me to video call him over wifi, using two iPhone 4's" (Sarcasm) Airplay, Airprint, all marketing terms. It's not just Apple, Samsung: "Samsung Smart TV," in your world, they would have said, "you can use your TV to brows the internet."

We all use marketing terms, we use them for convenience NOT because we don't know / are dumb.

USB will happen but only or charging

The EU regulation applies only to charging. Nothing in the regulation specifies accessories must work over USB and it's really simple for Apple to provide the connector but only hook up the charging. Some providers already cheap out on customers by providing "USB leads" which are labelled "charging only" so I expect Apple will take the same approach but by only wiring up the charing piece inside the device, so no matter what lead you use, charge is all you will get.

They may also simply ship a "usb to dock charging adaptor."

Don't they already do this: Link

Anyone else like to connect his/her iPod classic on the iPad?

A matter of having all songs at hand.

No. But I would like to connect with my iPhone4 and share the internet connection like the BB PlayBook. That would be more useful.

USB is possible (maybe limited to charging the ipad only) but retina wont happen this soon. Most probably with iPad 3. Doesnt make sense to increase the display resolution by 4X within one year. Not to mention such a big display with this high res will be too costly and difficult to manufacture and the battery drain and processor power needed to run it smoothly might be a bit too much to handle with current tech.

That said, I cant wait for higher res iPad. Current one pales in comparison when you compare it to iPhone 4's display.

I think retina on the ipad could happen, remember Steve's concept of a retinal display was a certain pixel density at a certain distance. maybe he will claim that you would use the ipad at a much larger distance then the pixel density would not need to be as high for him to call it Retina

Video Out

What they should definitively add is a video out port; HDMI should do it: not everyone has/brings an :apple:Tv with him/herself every time.

I think this guy was talking about other technologies over the years, like when Apple was one of the first to drop the floppy drive.

But to comment on the original post, it's called progress. Technologies come and go. It also means that what you buy today will be obsolete within a year and there will be something better soon. This is reality. Apple is not being mean to money grubbing by improving their products... they are doing what we love best... leading the way in new technology. What seems odd today will be the normal in 2-3 years.

Yes Apple, please put a USB.

Or at least some kind of mini-USB and an adaptor.

Why the he** is the EU making a LAW about what kind of charging interface a phone should have? Shouldn't that kind of choice be made by device manufacturers at their own peril?

And like others have pointed out: The law allows for dongles AND the iPad isn't a phone. There's a 0% chance of a USB port appearing on any Apple iPad ever.

The point of the law is to reduce electronic waste, as cell phone chargers are rendered useless pretty much every time a user buys a new phone.

Let me suggest to you why it makes plenty of sense. Besides the obvious use in Face Time (as with the iPhone 4), it would especially be a wonderful tool for large-format photography on the iPad. Decades ago I used to shoot large-format film stills. There is NO COMPARISON between them and standard 35mm prints. So much more clarity and detail! Some of the cameras back then used film all the way up to 4x5 and 8x10 inches. Imagine this on an Apple iDevice with screen real estate the size of the iPads'! With a decent image sensor---at least 8 MP (and a flash unit of course)---coupled with the 'new' HDR technology, people could turn out some truly EXCELLENT large-format work. Forget about how to hold the thing---what a great viewfinder!---it will become natural very quickly. That's why it makes PLENTY of sense. I for one hope Apple implements it. :)

I'd say photography makes the least sense as why they would put a camera on the ipad, document scanning and AR apps seems far more likey than anyone trying to hold out a 10" tablet in front of them to shoot a picture

Pretty sure he was kidding. You look mad silly now.

I've tried to decipher the USB regulation in the EU and I am not sure I can make sense of it.

It appears to me one might make the argument that the current charging system of the iPad either literally complies with USB charging standards, or could be easily modified to adhere to them without the addition of an actual USB port of any kind on the iPad.

My iPad charges perfectly well on my iMac. When plugged into a lower power device like the USB port on a DVD player or an old laptop, it still charges, but at a slower rate and while showing the warning notice "Not Charging" (even though it is charging).

I'm left believing they can comply with EU without changing the form factor at all, and they might be slightly ahead of the curve when compared to other manufacturers.

if they really implement USB port on the coming iPad... Then, I wish it can works with files transfer via thumbdrive / flash drive (at least)
