What?

What competitors are competing with the iPad based on price? The Galaxy Tab requires a contract, the Rim Playbook isn't out yet.

You really should read more than the comic pages of the newspaper. There are plenty of 7" craptastic tablets being sold everywhere... Priced at $100 USD on up.

Time will tell. I won't be getting a current generation iPad, but I would consider one in the future. It would probably not be very useful to my needs but would be fun to have around if I have any spare cash. :p

the design of usb / mini usb looks so ugly and cheap. If Apple implemented this it would totally ruin the design of the iPad and the ethics of Apple. I am sure if the eu thing affects apple they will work a way around it just like they did with flash. If something is not good for the ipad, don't include it

Might as well take USB ports out of all Apple products then. Because they're oh so ugly and cheap.

Imagine if none of their computers had USB. :p

Arn....

Meanwhile, the quote from the paper suggests the new displays will be "Retina Display" technology that will enhance "image and color output"

"Retina" is simply a ppi:distance to user ratio. It is not some magical technology. Stop reinforcing the morons here who continually shriek about "Retina". The resolution required to make an iPad "Retina" and still compatible with the current apps is 2048x1536 at minimum.

not happening.... Apple will make you suffer a little more. then, When everything seems to be lost.... a camera will be right there! (on the back only, just to fck with you)

I can't wait for it to come out, I want one! Going to USB would suck, maybe they will make a Europe only model with USB for the connector. But actually the current one does charge via USB, hmm.

Here is a link to the FAQ the EU released on this issue last year:
If the iPad 2 can host calls via Facetime, it becomes classified as a data enabled mobile in EU terms. So it would make sense for Apple to comply with their agreement with the EU in this case.

So then as my MacBook Pro can call via Facetime, is it a "data enabled mobile"? And will it then be getting micro usb charging? Sweet! Can't wait to be able to plug my MacBook into itself!

If you meant via mobile data (EDGE, 3G) then Facetime currently isn't supported on these networks.

It's not silly at all. Think about it. Every mobile phone / device has its own proprietary data cable / power cord. When you upgrade to a new device it would make sense that you can keep the same charger / cable from your old device instead of chucking it in the landfill. I'd like to have one cord / charger that fits all my mobile devices.

Different devices have different needs, and all interfaces have several pro's and con's associated with them. micro usb can't be physically used as a dock connector ala the hundreds of compatible speakers for iPods. Some devices will eventually want for higher power than the existing spec is able to deliver, so would you rather stick with legacy hardware and go with longer charging times?

As it is, almost everyone has a Dock connector cable lying around somewhere, and a USB port to go along with it. The only mobile I've had experience with where I could reasonably expect almost anyone to own a charger for were Nokia's. The iPhone isn't there yet, but I think between all iOS devices the market is big enough that the average guy will likely own that dock connector cable. I know that I have several (somehow more than the amount of iOS devices I've owned...), still got a couple of useless firewire ones now.

why can't apple come back with the firewire i device connecters? I really think that that could be a good idea. People want higher data transfers then what usb 2.0 have and this would be the only way to do it. Who want's to back up 15 GB worth of data over a usb 2.0?

I don't get all the "no way" votes on USB. There's a lot more real estate on an iPad to add at least a mini-USB port, but I think a full-size one would be doable. It would be great to use for card readers instead of spending money on one that only works with the dock connector.

I doubt the dock connector would be abolished on the iPad. That would be such a huge change for Apple and wouldn't make sense based on all the accessories.

Assuming people are blathering about Retina in this context as double resolution like iP3->iP4.

Yes it will increase the battery draw, even displaying a static image, because the back-plane is active transistor controlled. Double the resolution and you quadruple the transistors.

But that is the minor part. Moving around 4x times as many pixels, means Apple needs a GPU that is 4x as powerful to maintain same smoothness, that is going to draw a lot more power.

But this is really a nonsense discussion. They aren't going to put more pixels in an iPad than a Macbook pro, no matter how much the fanboys gush about it.

Neither is a linear 1:1 relationship.

Interesting, I'll have to consider it. In the meantime...

Tablets, pocket pcs, etc have been around for a long time, but saying that that class of device competes with iPad would be like saying the Razr was a competitor for the iPhone. Now the iPad *does* have real competition that is matching it on features, form factor, etc, but they're not selling for $100. With the possible exception of the upcoming PlayBook so far they've all had to give way on something, and so far it's mostly been cost.

But no reason we can't kick back and read some funnies:

Apple iPad's rivals can't hang on pricing

The iPad stands alone, lacking real competition

"...we expect the slew of upcoming competition to fall flat from a user experience standpoint while stuggl[ing] to materially undercut the iPad on price."
http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/10/04/apple.said.to.be.12.18.months.ahead/

"Apple's decision to introduce its tablet at as low as possible a cost is justified by this, as it means competitors must work hard to emulate the Cupertino firm's offering on price."
http://blogs.computerworld.com/17273/apples_ipad_carves_95_tablet_market_competition_is_dust

"Apple has openly admitted that its future gross margins will decline because of aggressive pricing on newer 'innovative' products."

Oh Garfield, you just don't like Nermal at all! Tee hee!

Eu legislation states it has to have USB. It's coming

I thought that legislation only pertained to mobile phones...? If it's all "mobile devices that require a charger" does that mean we'll see electric razors with USB ports?

I agree that they'll probably just include an adapter to skirt around the rules, but I'd laugh my a$$ off if Apple had the ball... guts to build in a USB port and then wire it up solely to the charging system. Can you imagine how big of an F-U that would be and how pi$$ed many of the users would get?

Apple is so cool they will "reinvent" the floppy drive by putting it in iPad 2G.

I mean how many old unused floppies are still sitting around in boxes in attics, closets, and basements?

Of course it will be "magical" so instead of stating the obvious, the media punzits will praise the "hip retroness" of the iPad 2G.

But with the 3G Apple will suddenly delete the floppy drive and then everyone will realize it wasn't cool at all. There will be blood on the blogs.....

And ultimately, those with unsellable old 2G models will be forced to upgrade to 3G.

And this approach to "product differentiation" will be taught in all college level business courses as the literal "textbook example" of how to milk a product line for maximum profit.

Apple giveth...and Apple taketh away. :p

yu fale at funni.

12 pages and no ones has mentioned that Pixel Qi's high viewing angle Transmissive2 technology is due to hit consumer devices early next year. It's not like Apple doesn't have some connections with that company. They are fabless but i'm sure Apples partners would help produce the screens.

That would qualify as a new display technology, that will help with battery life and maybe even size as the panels are meant to be thiner than standard LCD.

the rest of the five are mostly expected.

Although the USB thing is interesting, I can see why they would put the microUSB port on the machine but not at the expense of the dock. Maybe they'll cut a notch in the dock where the firewire pins where to get a dual function port.

Thanks for sharing these. It clearly says iPad 2 will have retina display, 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, carbon fiber back, biometric security, air gestures, USB 4, available February 30th, $100 price drop. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek:

Your forgot to mention the Blu-Ray Drive :D

I don't see retina displays happening just yet, the resolution is too high, are there even mobile graphics chips that can drive that yet?

All changes are predictable as Apple is trying to catch up with Samsung Tab. iPad should also get more RAM.

This is the funniest thing I've read on MacRumors in a long time. The iPad needs to catch up to the Galaxy Tab, a device which is essentially a beta? I tested a Galaxy Tab in store, tried navigating to a simple website and the entire thing froze and became unresponsive. I then discovered that open Android brought the joy of Windows ctrl-alt-delete to touch screen devices.

I think a lot of people have been holding out buying an iPad simply because of the lack of a FaceTime camera. It's an obvious implementation waiting to happen.

I'm assuming you're not currently an iPad owner, anyone familiar with the device knows that facetime will be an ergonomic nightmare with the iPad, unless it is docked on a desk, in which case you might as well be on your laptop/desktop.

The assumption that facetime/front facing camera is an obvious omission is a poor one, this is not a camera or phone, it's the wrong form factor. If the major new feature of the new iPad is the camera, I won't be upgrading - likewise a USB port - simply not necessary. An SD card slot and a dock connector in the long side would be my must haves. I want to be able to dock/charge with the device in landscape orientation.
