Maybe Near Field Communications (NFC) so you can use your iPad as a giant credit card

Another idea is inductive charging

LTE radio?

Given is at least a front facing camera for Facetime and typical thinning, better battery life, faster, more capacity.

I know Steve said 7" tablets are useless but I would like to see one. I purchased an android 7" to use as my in-car gps/entertainment but would much rather have a 7" iPad. The current iPad is too big to dash mount.

I'd bet on a new dock connector before a USB port, the current dock connector doesn't support digital video out which is why we don't have have HDMI adapters right now.

I'd expect the next iPad to support HDMI/displayport and LightPeak if it's ready to go. This means we're going to need a new dock connector. Apple would have to be dragged kicking and screaming into providing a separate micro USB port. They'll probably try to skirt the EU standards by providing an adapter.

USB and retina display I will believe when I see.
USB - I'd be very skeptical when they've been a firm supporter in FireWire. I'd rather see a mini FireWire port than USB.

Retina - Why not? What would be the point upgrading when they held back on a Retina display to start off with? An anti-glare and higher res screen would make it much more of an attractive buy over a kindle. I'm certainly holding tight for a better screen on the iPad. Logical when you have the iPhone/iTouch benchmarking the technology already.

Maybe a 1280x960 display but I'd be very surprised if they can source a "retina display" version with 2048x1536 pixels at 10" - I haven't heard any rumours of a panel such as that available anywhere yet.

New display technology could mean a display that can switch to reflective mode - similar to e-ink displays meaning that you could use it without a backlight. I'd be surprised though since the contrast and colour quality on those is far below the kind of quality Apple likes to go on about.

rorschach, increasing the resolution of the display would likely have little to no impact on the battery life apart from a slight increase in graphics processing required to drive that resolution - it's the backlight that eats into battery life and they could easily use the same backlight as they're using now.

I agree but I think people are confused with the "Retina Display" tag. A Retina Display on the iPad does not necessarily mean 326 ppi. It did on the phone b/c that was the what it took for the pixels to disappear at a normal viewing distance. For the iPad, they will up it to whatever density is needed for the pixels to disappear during normal use of an iPad. What the number is I don't know, but I think we can all assume it won't be 326.

4 of these are obvious. (retina display wouldn't actually be the same pixel density as the iphone 4 they would probably keep the same resolution as the iphone 4 just on a bigger screen. They can get away with this because ipads are typically held farther from your face.)

the usb would be really interesting... especially because the software currently doesn't support being able to manage and transfer files that way (i don't think). I would love if Apple added a USB as well as a "file storage" app that all other apps had access to. If apps had direct access to the USB as well that'd be cool.

I have several apps that can transfer files over USB both to and from my iPhone from my computer.

One is 'Files.' Others are 'VLC' and 'Google Earth.'

All this would change is which cable you have in your bag. It would work the same way.

I toyed with the idea of getting one, but with no USB there wasn't a good way to download pictures from my camera (Yes, I've been told there are adapters, but that sounds like a pain in the butt).

I'd be far more likely to buy an iPad if it had that feature.

I must say being able to watch pictures taken on a trip on the way back in the car/train/bus/teleporter is quite an asset.

Apple Giveth And Taketh Awayeth = Good Businesseth?

Apple is so cool they will "reinvent" the floppy drive by putting it in iPad 2G.

I mean how many old unused floppies are still sitting around in boxes in attics, closets, and basements?

Of course it will be "magical" so instead of stating the obvious, the media punzits will praise the "hip retroness" of the iPad 2G.

But with the 3G Apple will suddenly delete the floppy drive and then everyone will realize it wasn't cool at all. There will be blood on the blogs.....

And ultimately, those with unsellable old 2G models will be forced to upgrade to 3G.

And this approach to "product differentiation" will be taught in all college level business courses as the literal "textbook example" of how to milk a product line for maximum profit.

Apple giveth...and Apple taketh away. :p

This is page 2, at best. Let's be real, Apple never makes that much change in a new model, especially for the fastest selling gadget ever.

USB and retina display- surely you jest.

EU law says that mobile phones need to be compatible with a Micro-USB charger. This doesn't not mean it needs to have such a port on the device. Dongles are allowed. Apple will simply package dongles with the phones sold in Europe.

iOS apps are, for the most part, bitmap creatures. Once you go adding non multiple resolutions, then you automatically introduce a lot of fragmentation into the iPad app marketplace.I just don't see how the next resolution, whenever it is introduced, could be anything other than 2048 X 1536.

I think a lot of people have been holding out buying an iPad simply because of the lack of a FaceTime camera. It's an obvious implementation waiting to happen.

Apple is selling EVERY last ipad it can get its partners to manufacture!!!! No need to snipe about the holdouts. Apple's strategy is absolutely sound and designed to bring maximum $'s to the homeland. :D ....... :D........ :D

cheers

That doesn't mean anything yet......Apple will find a way around it for at least one more revision. Maybe iPad 3 gets it.

Well, Apple could show us right now what is planning to do with USB, for those who have the iPad Camera Kit.

I would like to be able to save data (not just photos and videos) to USB or SD Card.

How difficult or illegal is that?

You just have to move your data to the cloud, before they move you there, that is. :p

I thought someone said the EU was mandating electronics had to have a mini-USB to used for charging. If so, perhaps this was the reason that a new USB would be included.
