iOS apps are, for the most part, bitmap creatures. Once you go adding non multiple resolutions, then you automatically introduce a lot of fragmentation into the iPad app marketplace.I just don't see how the next resolution, whenever it is introduced, could be anything other than 2048 X 1536.

I completely agree. I don't think they'll change the resolution of the iPad until they can source panels with 4x the number of pixels. I'm sure the next iPad won't have anything different display wise. When they do change display technology it will likely either be for a 2048x1536 panel which they'll market as a 'retina display' or they'll switch to a panel with the same resolution that can also function without the backlight on for easier ebook reading which is even more unlikely because then it'd lose the glossy, bright, high contrast style they like.

Just saying cant apple threaten not to sell any iPod iPads and iPhones in Europe if they need micro USB? I mean in a week there would be problems for Europe and they prob would give up.

Obviously you live outside Europe, and thus don't know how stubborn those bas**** are. I mean European lawmakers.

Some ppl confusing about "Retina Display" term

apple told us retina display means display that have
resolution above 300 ppi, that is the maximum detail that the
human retina can process

that means if you want to make the term "Retina display"
possible on 9.7" iPad display, at least you must *2.3 on current resolution
(2356*1767 @ 303.61 PPI), not *2 it not "Retina display"

The reason I could see a rear camera is for scanning in papers. If you want it to be used more for business, add the back camera with a good enough resolution to scan an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper. I use this all the time on my iphone but would love to be able to use my ipad screen to frame it in rather than try to guess with my smaller iphone screen, and then have to port it over anyway.

Yes! iPad as personal scanner/Document Reader/Printer (Airprint).

Nah, they'll just change what they mean by "retina display". Even their current standard is scientifically incorrect. I think I remember reading that at the distances they claim, you'd actually need 450ppi for the eye to not be able to make out the pixels. I can certainly make out pixels on my iPhone 4 despite the high resolution and antialiased fonts etc. Still doesn't stop it from being the nicest display to look at I've ever seen though.

I wonder what crazy powerful, power sipping mobile GPU would be needed to power such a resolution?

That alone is why I very much doubt the iPad would have a "retina display" anytime soon. :D

They actually said it was Retina at 300 ppi viewed from 12-18 inches. If you hold it closer, you will see pixels.

I don't know why everyone finds the addition of USB so unbelievable. We're not talking about ditching the dock connector, just adding a USB port as well.

Think about it. I'd be willing to bet that the camera connection kit is one of the most frequently purchased accessories for the iPad. They might just have decided to build it into the iPad for convenience.

I hear what the most cynical of you are thinking as well, that Apple would never build it in as it would cost them the accessory sales. But in my opinion picking up several new $499 iPad owners who wouldn't have purchased it without a USB port is better than a few piddly $30 accessory sales.

I believe the standard USB port is thicker than the iPad. Apple doesn't do thicker.

aren't these required to go through itunes though? Maybe I'm wrong

Yes, but switching to a USB port wouldn't change that. iOS is made to talk to iTunes. It would keep doing that no matter what plug they used.

That's what I meant when I said it wouldn't really change anything besides the cable in your bag. The iPad would keep working the same way it does now.

Why the he** is the EU making a LAW about what kind of charging interface a phone should have? Shouldn't that kind of choice be made by device manufacturers at their own peril?

And like others have pointed out: The law allows for dongles AND the iPad isn't a phone. There's a 0% chance of a USB port appearing on any Apple iPad ever.

FaceTime? Outside group video-conferencing, who really uses video calling.

Personally I'd prefer a Ethernet port that USB. If they would expand the function of the preexisting USB attachment that would do.

There is nothing for Apple to do to make the iPad compatible with the EU regulations for universal charger: the iPad is not a cell-phone!

I'm thinking there will be a mini/micro USB port, but limited to charging only.

yes, sorta like the appleTV having an inactive USB port used for maintenance purposes only. (I can see Apple doing something like that)

P.

It's actually a really great thing, why shouldn't there be a universal standard for cell phone chargers? You ever need a charger and you will always be able to borrow one from a friend regardless of what phone they have.
