The resolution of a Retina Display on the iPad would be 2048 x 1536, just a little less than the 27-inch Cinema Dsiplay. How big of battery would be needed to power that thing?!

I can see where your thinking is. That resolution of display will require a very meaty graphics processor. As the current iPad is a system on a chip (The A4 processor), then Apple would either need to radically overall the A4 design or move to discreet graphics processors which would consume a lot of power. Even a much improved A4 would consume more power.

The other big issue would be heat, a processor capable of rendering that graphical resolution smoothly, would produce a lot of heat that would need discipating.

Now, although fo most manufacturers, this would result in the rumor being totally dismissed as a non-starter, but we know Apple has vast design resources that could overcome this. Whether they could by a Q1 launch time window is where my doubts are.

As for USB, I doubt it would be on the iPad, but I could see an iPad connector to USB adapter being included to allow for connection to printers, cameras (for downloading photos), scanners, etc.

However, Apple would likely limit what you could do via a USB interface, for example, adding additional storage could be made unavailable.

USB is not happening

Yes it will and with it will come a whole host of accessories like actual gaming controllers with dual analogue sticks etc. FPS games run pretty sweet on the iPad but using your thumbs on the screen just like the iPhone is not something that is comfortable especially when at home. Its not very rewarding or useful. Imagine sat behind an iPad playing Rage or others and the only thing you need is a proper gaming pad. This coupled with Airplay to watch the image on a big screen. This is gonna be the way forward.

This would be absolutely huge. Apple bangs on about its gaming on its iOsS devices but really what do you prefer? Tilting a tablet or actually using a controller? This is where the iPad will become game changing.

A super thin device that can actually double up as a home console. I can really imagine getting all those retro games such as Sonic etc and playing them on an iPad in the comfort of my own home. Playing online with Gamecentre etc. I predicted a USB port for the next release. It also get rid of pesky cheap white adaptors that you plug in on the bottom of the iPad for SD cards etc. I also imagine they will incorporate a SD card reader too.

This iPad 2 is gonna be the thing that everyone will want. All Apple has to do is design an build a Dual analogue controller and world domination awaits. Games like Call of Duty really do then become playable and appealing.

I have an iPhone 4, the only thing stopping me buying a game on it is the lack of control via controller. you simply cannot enjoy these games via a touch interface. Yeah Angry birds work well but that about it. Im thinkin platformers, FPS, MMO games.

Steve J if your reading this then give me a call and we can talk business. you know it makes sense big boy!

It's actually a really great thing, why shouldn't there be a universal standard for cell phone chargers? You ever need a charger and you will always be able to borrow one from a friend regardless of what phone they have.

I agree that it's a nice standard to have, but it just doesn't seem like a matter of state.

Would jump up and down for USB - need to be able to connect to 3G modem so I can share it between devices rather than having yet another data account!

If you need USB on iPad probably you are using iPad in a way it should not be used, it is not a computer but a multi-use mobile gadget complimentary to your computer.
Sure an usb could be useful but i don't see it on an iPad... USB means people expect usb drives to work, this mean you need mass storage drivers and maybe other device drivers but especially it means you must have a file system browser... which is not natural on a device like that. i can picture people make confusion with that, iOS must be super simple, with no filesystem. This is my opinion, i can be wrong :)

Ok and now without the brainwashed part please?
A filesystem is the next step for a productive OS...

Just saying cant apple threaten not to sell any iPod iPads and iPhones in Europe if they need micro USB? I mean in a week there would be problems for Europe and they prob would give up.
You don't know anything about business, do ya? In the real world, you bend over backwards to accommodate a market the size of the EU.

The way I understand the MicroUSB law, they can just replace the end of the cable that's standard USB to MicroUSB and the EU would be happy. So they could ship two cables one regular USB and one MicroUSB and the charger could either support both or just MicroUSB. Of course just providing a dongle would be cheaper.

The gyroscope...
Yes
...video phone (FaceTime)...
Yes
...better mobility (thinner/smaller)...
Thinner? Yes just a bit. Smaller? Not after Steve Jobs said the they could not make is as magical at a smaller size. I guess if the screen was the same size but the border around it got smaller. It's already a nice size for what it is. It's not supposed to be a phone!
..."Retina Display"...
I can see that, but maybe not yet. Not on top of these other changes.
...USB connector is perhaps the most surprising...
If I didn't see Apple moving their MacBook line in the direction of the iPad (see the MacBook Air 2010 keynote) then I could see this. But I don't think they want to make the iPad more like a real computer, they still want you to use iTunes on a real computer (preferably one of theirs!) transfer photos and other files. I would love to see the iPad as a truly stand alone product but I don't think so.

_Assuming_ that Apple were going to make way to add a whole bunch of new gaming accessories why would they use USB? Can it be done wirelessly (like Bluetooth 3.0)?

I'd Rather SD Card Slot

A SD Card Slot would make more sense than a USB port, but neither are going to happen...

I like the idea of scanning documents with a back-mounted camera. Hadn't considered that before.

Why the he** is the EU making a LAW about what kind of charging interface a phone should have? Shouldn't that kind of choice be made by device manufacturers at their own peril?

Because it's neither consumer nor environmental friendly. The charger itself is not really a USP, much like the non-standard headphone jacks on Sony Ericsson phones. Hence manufacturers don;t have any incentive to improve the situation for the customer.

I've had Sony Ericsson, HTC, HP and iPhones, and they all go with a different charger. Why should I invest in multiple cheap, power inefficient chargers. Let me buy one high efficiency charger and use it for all devices. Not to mention that you're going to dispose all of them at some point...

Granted, the EU came too late into this game. It seems that USB is approaching charging standard anyway thanks to USB outlets in cars and on airplanes. By the time the EU regulation kicks in it's more or less done anyway.

The EU has certainly produced worse laws, like about bananas and cucumbers.

You don't need a USB port for that. They can already make controllers that connect through the dock connector or bluetooth if they want to.

Nah, they'll just change what they mean by "retina display". Even their current standard is scientifically incorrect. I think I remember reading that at the distances they claim, you'd actually need 450ppi for the eye to not be able to make out the pixels. I can certainly make out pixels on my iPhone 4 despite the high resolution and antialiased fonts etc. Still doesn't stop it from being the nicest display to look at I've ever seen though.

good display, yes!

iPad2 will have a new enhanced magical mystical display with a mystery term attached........ perhaps iFlyRetina?

if i understand rumours/facts correctly the european union? will be enforcing some sort of usb/micro port to cell phones (and other gadgets)? perhaps this will force apple to comply?

I toyed with the idea of getting one, but with no USB there wasn't a good way to download pictures from my camera (Yes, I've been told there are adapters, but that sounds like a pain in the butt).

I'd be far more likely to buy an iPad if it had that feature.

You'll want to keep your pictures on your computer too. Right?

Transfer your pictures to your computer, from your computer to your DropBox folder, which automatically puts them on your iPad through the free DropBox app.

I would love the next iPad to have a 7" screen and 128 GB capacity option, both of which are almost an impossibility. :(

I think Apple have managed to get away with it. I mean the iPhone isn't connected via a mini USB, it has it's own connection with a USB on the other end. A similar law is in effect in China, which was one of many reasons why China didn't allow the iPhone into the country.

I don't know how Apple have got around that law but they have, at present I don't think it's law yet but is planned to be in future here in the EU. If the iPhone can get around that law then I imagine the iPad should be able to. Ofcourse it could be a case of Apple having to do it in future models.

Edit: It looks like Apple will use mini USB charger; http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/jun/30/universal-mobile-phone-charger

The "Retina Display" resolution will be whatever Apple decides it will be, and not necessarily match either the iPhone or iPod Touch. Finally, each pixel (if there are more then the iPad now has) need not be illuminated to the level of the current pixels to get the same overall brightness.
