wow

What ******** europe you cant make them put a usb port on it. Apple should just stop selling there until they make an exception.

I'd take these rumors with a grain of salt at this time.

I doubt we'll see 300+ pixel per inch in iPad 2 or iPad 3 unless they roll out a 6.8" iPad Mini. (and that's not going to happen.). I think the reporter didn't know what "retina display" means. It's probably just adjustments to make using iPad in direct sunlight easier.

Thinner, lighter? It's already pushing the envelope here, but hey, if they do it, that would be cool. Apple will just be putting more distance between them and the chunky iPad "wanna-bes".

Gyroscope is expected, and will make some games and VR / 3D apps much better.

FaceTime - expected, but given how often I use FaceTime on my iPhone/iPod Touch, it's not a big deal.

USB - great! Now I can plug in a mouse! Just kidding. Not sure what I would use USB for, other than connecting pre-cloud legacy gear like USB flash drives or something...

So, that's it for iPad 2? Not much reason to hold off buying an iPad 1 at this point. The changes seem to be pretty small incremental improvements. The only reason to hold out would be if iPad comes with more RAM (512mb) really. But there haven't been any rumors about that yet.

I can see USB happening (like the appletv) but a retina display on a 9.7 inch screen? Not freaking likely.

I think faster CPU/more RAM is a given for sure.

Actually that kind of decision should be made at the United Nations level.

No, it should not. What business does the UN have telling any company what computer interface they have to put on their devices? Other than fire/safety issues, the only thing that should have a say is the marketplace. If Apple wanted to make an interface out of Jelly Beans, so long as they did not cause a fire or other safety issue, they should be allowed to. If consumers don't like the Jelly Bean interface, Apple will fail in the market. If the marketplace like the idea of Jelly Bean based interfaces, then Apple wins in the market. Its as simple as that, and no UN dictating is required.

I was mildly surprised when the current iPhone 4 didn't come with a USB port. The next most likely will. Perhaps Apple are moving away from the dock connector?

USB= Yes. In Europe if the law requires it. Everyone else... no.

Apple would never willingly give up a proprietary port that they can make money off by by licensing 3rd parts accessories with. Or any company. It's why every port is different from brans of phones to other electronic devices.

But in Europe this is becoming a hot button issue and they're forcing a standard on people. We'll never see that here though. There will be a EU version of devices with different ports.

I can see the USB port being added, it may also be added to the iPhone. The EUC is going to require that all phones use USB for charging to protect consumers and reduce electronic waste.

It makes sense that they would use it for the iPad as well, proprietary cables are a draw back for business customers who will see it as an additional cost that they don't need. I imagine that the EUC will eventually require the same thing of tablets.

Apple should bring the retina display to the iPad because it makes for a great user experience.

I would be surprised if it were, but that's what I like about Apple, I've been surprised before.

The retina display would be a distinguishing feature for the iPad. We're about to see a slew of iPad like tablets that aren't as well designed but feature packed in the hopes that 4 USB ports on a tablet will sway customers away from the iPad.

Not a chance....... going all cloud based.
Haven't you read anything or have you just put your hands over your ears and went "La la la, I'm not listening"?

iPads, iPhones, and even iPods in Europe will have to have a Micro USB in order to charge up. This would mean Apples current way of doing it will change, and I doubt they will have a different version of each product for Europe and everywhere else, and wireless charging is not ready yet.

This will happen, and this has to happen, be it in the next generation or the generation after, but the iPad will get a USB port by default.

Let's be real, Apple never makes that much change in a new model, especially for the fastest selling gadget ever.

You may be correct, however Apple needs to move the bar at a rate that keeps the competition slightly off balance. The competition will always be able to use price as their advantage. If Apple's long term road map leads the market correctly, competition will usually be playing "catch up."

Micro USB is coming

Here is a link to the FAQ the EU released on this issue last year:

http://europa.eu/rapid/pressRelease...format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en

The companies were 'encouraged' to self regulate or legislation would have been forthcoming, hence the agreement.

If the iPad 2 can host calls via Facetime, it becomes classified as a data enabled mobile in EU terms. So it would make sense for Apple to comply with their agreement with the EU in this case.

Apple can allow for a universal charger (that's all the Micro USB is required to do) without losing any control or profit. Syncing can still be controlled via the dock connector. It's no biggie.

So Apple is going to stop selling to a land mass greater than the USA, and one of it largest consumer bases just because they don't want to use a certain charging device that they have agreed and signed up to use?

I love that people are completely ignorant of the fact that Apple will just provide a dongle for micro-USB compatibility in the EU.

Haha... I trolled you but good.

Smart

That kind of decision shouldn't be made at all. The government shouldn't have any say in what type of port a device uses. That's silly.

It's not silly at all. Think about it. Every mobile phone / device has its own proprietary data cable / power cord. When you upgrade to a new device it would make sense that you can keep the same charger / cable from your old device instead of chucking it in the landfill. I'd like to have one cord / charger that fits all my mobile devices.

I'd love to have an iPad with a nicer display, but it's not worth me buying a new one, when the one I have works perfectly fine and the screen looks great.

I don't need a USB port. I don't need a camera -- I have an iPhone4 and I haven't even attempted to use Face Time. I don't need anything that runs any faster, because i've never had any issues with speed on my current iPad. The size and weight are perfect to me. Big enough to have decent screen real estate, but small enough to fit into my hands. And the weight is just heavy enough to feel solid in my hands.

I honestly can't think of anything they would add to the iPad this generation that would make me want another one. I've racked my brain about this..

Would it be nice? Yeah..

But for that to be the law? I agree with the poster you quoted, it's silly.

You get a cable with just about any new phone you buy, anyway.

And the dongle will also be able to transfer media, thus defeating the point of just giving away a dongle in anway. Also I'm pretty sure the law would be very strict on meaning the device itself must have a USB connection.

I don't see it being any earlier than April as think of how many people are going to get the iPad for Christmas, is apple only going to give them 1 month of using a new product before dissapointing them?

I hope not anyway...

Don't worry, it's the least of Apple's concern. They will put it out when they feel like it (or they feel it's ready) may that be January 1st or May 31st. ;)

The only thing you can be sure of is that Apple won't put it out before Christmas (not that the timing is too short but they would never loose a chance to sell-out the current generation) ;)

So you would you hook up your USB controllers to an iPad, which is connected over WiFi to your AppleTV, which is connected via HDMI to your bigscreen?

Why wouldn't you just forego the iPad entirely, and hook Bluetooth controllers (like consoles already use) directly to your AppleTV?

Even better! Completely forgot about AppleTV. Probably because its of no real use to anyone outside of the US. Now that would be interesting. APple surely can see the potential of the App store and the amount of gaming revenue. As I said before I would never dream of playing any driving, shooter or any other game on the iPhone or iPad purely because this whole touch based interface for gaming simply doesn't work as well as a proper controller.

However if Apple suddenly started to make the whole thing a reality with a controller I could honestly say that I could happily say goodbye to my xbox and PS3 in favour of a whole online userbase that comes with Gamecentre.

And with iPad the whole gets portable. check into a hotel and streetfighter 2 played with a proper controller. Mint!

It's not, a dongle would be enough to satisfy the EU.

Retina

I'm not sure why anyone is so convinced they won't bring the Retina display to the iPad. To me, it makes the most sense.

Arguments against: Power consumption, resolution 2048 X 1536, cost.

1) Power consumption. I'd like to see some science on this. More pixels only necessarily equals more power if you're talking the same resolution. But the technology behind Retina means more DPI. Ergo, your dots are smaller and, likely, using less power for display.

But let's say it did take more power (and, even then, I wouldn't assume the amount of power it consumes is a scalar multiplier). Look at the size of the iPad compared to the iPhone. Way more room for a battery.

2) Resolution. One, I don't see anything inherently wrong with this resolution. That's like saying it's wrong to have a 960x640 resolution on a 3.5" (diagonal) screen. But that's the iPhone 4 right now.

Actually, if I were to venture a wild guess I would say that there's a possibility that decrease the size of the iPad slightly but put on a retina display. Increased resolution but not necessarily 2(x2) times. This would address all the issues mentions plus save weight.

3) Cost. I don't buy this either. The retina display on an iPhone 4 is $28.50. The display on the iPhone 3GS cost $19.25 (at time it was released). The iPad's current display costs $80. While larger displays do cost more, I don't see it being cost prohibitive, especially at the way Apple can raise prices and margins can increase.

To me, the real question is why they would do it. I don't see anything holding them back. If I were doing product strategy, the most pressing factor would be video. Video resolution with retina is far, far superior. If Apple really pushes into media (more than just Apple TV) and they want to support 720p or 1080p (1280x720 or 1920x1080 respectively) then it's pretty much guaranteed to see it on the iPad.

The Retina display might not be on the next iPad, but you can bet it's a matter of time. I would be surprised if we didn't see an IPS 1920x1080 screen within 1-2 years.

Personally i feel the dock connector is out of date, too big and wide and it has been around for a long time.
Maybe we need a connector that has micro usb and some other port combined to form a smaller connector.

That connector would allow connection to a mini usb cable to charge, but also a special port connector cable with both ports, mini usb to charge and the other to provide data sync, video out, etc

Something like this:

All changes are predictable as Apple is trying to catch up with Samsung Tab. iPad should also get more RAM.
