I think Apple have managed to get away with it. I mean the iPhone isn't connected via a mini USB, it has it's own connection with a USB on the other end. A similar law is in effect in China, which was one of many reasons why China didn't allow the iPhone into the country.

I don't know how Apple have got around that law but they have, at present I don't think it's law yet but is planned to be in future here in the EU. If the iPhone can get around that law then I imagine the iPad should be able to. Ofcourse it could be a case of Apple having to do it in future models.

Apple has agreed to it but I don't think the EU is enforcing it yet, as with many laws they make take their sweet time to enforce it and they may never do it either way. The EU often talks the talk but they don't always walk the walk.

AppleTV would be a better gaming console

Imagine sat behind an iPad playing Rage or others and the only thing you need is a proper gaming pad. This coupled with Airplay to watch the image on a big screen. This is gonna be the way forward.

So you would you hook up your USB controllers to an iPad, which is connected over WiFi to your AppleTV, which is connected via HDMI to your bigscreen?

Why wouldn't you just forego the iPad entirely, and hook Bluetooth controllers (like consoles already use) directly to your AppleTV?

You'll want to keep your pictures on your computer too. Right?
Transfer your pictures to your computer, from your computer to your DropBox folder, which automatically puts them on your iPad through the free DropBox app.

That's interesting. Does the ipad have a finder app where you can manage files and folders?
I would love to have one, but I can't justify it without a camera/mic and a usb port.
Future ones can have a Lightpeak port like Jobs wants for all macs, but for now, a serious tablet needs usb.

Could be as early as January...probably April at the latest.

I don't see it being any earlier than April as think of how many people are going to get the iPad for Christmas, is apple only going to give them 1 month of using a new product before dissapointing them?

I hope not anyway...

Yeah I get your points, but the point I was trying to make without actually saying, is that if the iPad gets a USB port it will be the micro USB in replacement of the current charging port, the same would apply for the iphone, and even the iPod range. So Apples mobile systems would be given a USB port be default. I highly doubt that their would be a different version for everywhere else in the world, so basically by default the whole world will soon having USB charging systems for everything because all manufacturers arn't going to make different charging systems, it would cost too much. Instead the end that can taken off and plugs into the wall will be a different end everywhere in the world with the cable itself being the same everywhere.

Retina display? Are you people stupid?

I suspect a better resolution, but not a Retina display. There's no way to make a lighter iPad with such a resolution unless we get far bigger processor and a battery time of 30 minutes.

Maybe the Onion predicted the Hummingbird Battery with some accuracy.

USB port? No.
Retina Display? No. "Better" display? Yes.
FaceTime? Yes.
Thinner and lighter? Yes. Barely.
Gyroscope stuff? Yes.

This is it.

However, as per later comments in your post, I'd use an iPad camera to actually shoot-edit pictures and video. I think the iPad would be a perfect camera/editor, if they make the step up.

You think it's too cumbersome for such task? You'd be surprised.

It won't be a stealthy camera, but it will make an excellent all-rounder for recording and working with stuff, then posting it.

The resolution of a Retina Display on the iPad would be 2048 x 1536, just a little less than the 27-inch Cinema Dsiplay. How big of battery would be needed to power that thing?!

Also, USB isn't happening.

That said, FaceTime is a given, as is the gyro. And hopefully one or two "surprises" beyond just the natural, expected progression of features.

It could still be a "retina" display. Considering usage Patterns probably show most people hold the iPad 10" - 14" from their face, a resolution bump to something like 1280 x 1024 could be enough to get the "retina" monicker.

Edit: It looks like Apple will use mini USB charger; http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/jun/30/universal-mobile-phone-charger

Take the current dock connector cable, cut the cable right before the dock connector and put a micro usb plug on the cable and a micro usb port on the dock connector and you have Apple's solution.

If you need USB on iPad probably you are using iPad in a way it should not be used, it is not a computer but a multi-use mobile gadget complimentary to your computer.
Sure an usb could be useful but i don't see it on an iPad... USB means people expect usb drives to work, this mean you need mass storage drivers and maybe other device drivers but especially it means you must have a file system browser... which is not natural on a device like that. i can picture people make confusion with that, iOS must be super simple, with no filesystem. This is my opinion, i can be wrong :)

USB would (should?) also be the connection to recharge the unit and sync with your computer. If every device manufacturer moved to a standard connector life would be much better for the consumer (there is already agreement in the EU for phones, and Apple is a signatory).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

Someone calculated once what the iPad display would be if it was doubled a la the retina display on the iPhone 4-- what were those numbers again? 2048x1536 I think... or higher-res than SEVERAL apple notebooks)... good luck on iPad battery life! (The iPhone 4 battery is ALREADY the majority of the inside, following the design of the iPad).

Why the he** is the EU making a LAW about what kind of charging interface a phone should have? Shouldn't that kind of choice be made by device manufacturers at their own peril?.

Actually that kind of decision should be made at the United Nations level.

I can see something like a "Retina" display, but not to the level of the iPhone 4 yet.

Mini USB and an SD slot would be a smart move that wouldn't increase the overall thickness of the iPad.

Of course they'll add Facetime with a front facing camera.

The gyroscope also seems very likely.

The next version of the A4 with a minimum of 512MB RAM is also very likely. What would be the guess for processor speed 1.5Ghz?

I hope they add a second dock connector on the side of the device.

And since they have made the lock orientation switch useless they should just remove it.

I thought the retina consumes less energy. Anyway, it's less likely to have such resolution (retina) in iPad v2.

So obviously, the next iPad won't be getting 300+ ppi,.... But would it be possible for it to get a little res bump, to about 1280x960?

I don't know what to think about a USB port... But we will see.

Just to make sure... Apple will have a media event to talk about the new iPad right? Not just a silent update with a video.

Any chance of even bigger battery? Not that it's needed but.. Idk.

Will it still have a4 or will it have an updated modified, cortex A9?

What will apple call this? Simply 2nd gen iPad? Or will it get a new name, like the iPhones did.

Any chance of a CDMA verizon version? I mean what are they doing selling iPad at verizon if it's not part of their network?

Is January too early of a release date? Early April would be the very
Latest right?

I don't know why everyone finds the addition of USB so unbelievable. We're not talking about ditching the dock connector, just adding a USB port as well.

Think about it. I'd be willing to bet that the camera connection kit is one of the most frequently purchased accessories for the iPad. They might just have decided to build it into the iPad for convenience.

I hear what the most cynical of you are thinking as well, that Apple would never build it in as it would cost them the accessory sales. But in my opinion picking up several new $499 iPad owners who wouldn't have purchased it without a USB port is better than a few piddly $30 accessory sales.

1 dollar accessory to make, 29 dollars of profit.

Yes it will and with it will come a whole host of accessories like actual gaming controllers with dual analogue sticks etc. FPS games run pretty sweet on the iPad but using your thumbs on the screen just like the iPhone is not something that is comfortable especially when at home. Its not very rewarding or useful. Imagine sat behind an iPad playing Rage or others and the only thing you need is a proper gaming pad. This coupled with Airplay to watch the image on a big screen. This is gonna be the way forward.

HAHAHAHA. No.

Let us not forget about the need to go to 512 MB of RAM, although I'd rather have 128 GB flash. :)

I would guess USB would be for downloading photos from a camera etc, not for charging. The iPad has a USB camera adapter, the old 4G iPod had a USB camera adapter, and if I recall the 5G iPod Video did for a bit.

As far as the retina display, maybe on the highest end one to differentiate the models and add value to the upper models?

Whats next a slot loading dvd drive?
I don't believe a thing until Apple releases information themselves. My 2 cents say they'll add a retina display and a front facing camera.
