hahaha 9to5mac!! THE MOST APPLE BIASED SITE ON THE WEB!!

And 37 million sold as of the last quarter and most recently the iPhone becoming the number one smartphone sold in Canada. Would state that plenty of people are MORE then happy with the iPhone's screen size seeing as they all have choice not to buy an iPhone, also according to wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone

the sales figures show a massive increase in the last half or quarter. Now that could be old 3G and 3GS owners upgrading but the figure just seems far too high to be based solely on that, no I would say plenty of new people are buying iPhones.
So you can produce all the percentages you want, Apple's sales figures do not lie and consumers have had the choice of bigger screen phones for a while now.

Sales figures don't really tell the story though. There is only one size and that's it. Yes, it was very successful, but so are Apple's other products. And the website being biased to Apple means what??? That is what we are talking about, people who use the iPhone want a bigger screen even if Apple says no. Like I said, I will always buy an iPhone because its the best os, but given a choice in screen size I would choose a bigger phone and I am sure I am not alone.

If Apple IOS had true resolution independence, it would be a non-issue. The app would supply high resolution graphics, and the OS would scale to the resolution of the device. (If the app only had low resolution graphics, the OS would upscale to the resolution of the device. Not as good as downscaling, but in the various BD threads many Apple fans claim that upscaled DVDs are as good as BDs....)

Instead, Apple only "supports" resolution doubling - a really lazy way of dealing with the issue.

In the case of a 4" Apple phone, however, Apple could be quite sleazy. All Apple would need to do is to say that you hold a 3.5" phone 10" from your face, and a 4" phone is held 11" from your face. Therefore, a 4" phone with the same pixel dimensions as the 3.5" phone is still a "retina display".

Problem solved.

Ah, alright. Thanks for clearing that up :)

is meant to be true.

Since the term "retina display" is a marketing term with no real fixed definition, if Apple could make the case that people with 4" screen phones typically hold them a bit further from their eyes Apple could honestly claim that a 4" Apple phone with the same pixel dimensions as a 3.5" Apple phone were both "retina displays".

The only "sleaze factor" is that many Apple fans think that "retina display" refers to an absolute DPI spec, and not DPI factored into viewing distance.

I guess I was thinking that apple was still hoping to keep the same PPI if they were to increase the screen size. So in the end the i guess PPI was really important to my tastes and preference.

Just for some to see what i mean, here is a little example of the relation to screen size and pixel count if it were to change to a 3.9 in screen with the previous iPad resolution :)

The green represents what it would be like if the resolution was 768 by 1024 while keeping a PPI of 326

Yes, but "PPI" has nothing directly to do with "retina display".

Apple could make a slightly larger Apple phone with the same pixel dimensions, and legitimately claim that it's still a "retina display" because most people will hold it slightly further away.

The Apple phone 4S display is 960-by-640 - don't bring other dimensions into this - since Apple IOS lacks resolution independence other pixel dimensions introduce problems for applications.

I'm simply saying that Apple could introduce a new Apple phone with a 4" screen with 960-by-640 dimensions and still legitimately call it "retina" if Apple changes the "typical" viewing distance - which they already have with the Apple tablet.

But, how much higher would those sales figures be if the Apple phone had at least an option for a larger screen?

(Don't answer - because the answer is unknown. But it's pretty clear that 3.5" is a bit smaller than many people want.)

Apple sales figures tells nothing about screen size preferences. If anything the fact that Android vendors sell twice more smart phones than Apple does indicates that people prefer bigger phones.

The bigger issue however is not whether 3.5" is small or not. The real issue is why Apple can't design two phones with different screens. Are their engineers too busy moon-lighting in genius bars or something? Ridiculous.

Apple only wants to make one size of device, why should it change when they are selling like hot cakes?

And why do you guy's keep on proclaiming that the majority of consumers in the world want a bigger iPhone screen? When you have nothing to base that presumption on? And a few people on internet forums does not warrant that user base!
That's why I quoted the sales figures as it's factual proof that people are happy with a 3.5" screen, their is nothing stopping them using Windows or Android or Blackberry. Yet they buy iPhone.

The Apple phone 4S display is 960-by-640 - don't bring other dimensions into this - since Apple IOS lacks resolution independence other pixel dimensions introduce problems for applications.

But hypothetically, no longer speaking about retina display, wouldn't it be easier to transition certain applications to a phone with a resolution similar to the ipads previous screen resolution since there are plenty of apps that are made both for iphone and ipad, so wouldn't it make sense to do so if they wanted to increase the screen size of the phone.

BECAUSE IF THEY WANT IOS THEY HAVE NO CHOICE. We both are wrong then. I am committed to iOS so even if Apple continues with a 3.5" then I will still get it. If the next one is 3.5" then I will stick to the 4s. If given the choice IN OIS, I would choose a 4" display. And the argument that you have a choice now with android and windows is not a good one. I have an iPhone because it works with all my Apple products and a windows or android phone will not do this.

If the OS had resolution independence, it wouldn't matter.

And, of course, small changes in the physical dimensions of the screen don't require changing the pixel dimensions - both a 3.5" Apple phone and a 4.0" Apple phone could be 960x640 - transparent to applications.

Percentage of growth!

Wow is my answer. The market is breaking ways to increase the odds as more people with old contracts ready to update their terms for a new carrier of choice or a different phone altogether. Globally the average is different of course and in United States is obvious the Apple bouyancy figures speak for itself. Lets no forsake the forces of physics with the technology race. Lets be honest touch screen era is todays wants and needs for convinience. When everyone is racing at the same rate is just around the corner when someone may leap to win ahead of the group.

That's an old argument that no longer makes sense. People used to argue that Apple would never make devices just for Verizon, for example, or sell more than one model of iPhone at a time. They were wrong.

Apple sells multiple sizes of laptops and iPods, and two screen resolutions each in iPads and iPhones. Adding a slightly larger screen size is nothing in comparison.

As I posted in another thread, by early 2011, 4" and above screens had already jumped to over a quarter of smartphones being sold. And a very recent report shows that the desire has grown quite a bit:

"Strategy Analytics has identified that smartphone owners want devices that have larger displays.

Almost 90% of existing smartphone owners chose a prototype smartphone with a display larger than their current device as their most preferred size. The sweet spot for these users is 4.0-inches to 4.5-inches, driven by increased web browsing and multimedia experiences

As everyone keeps trying to point out, that doesn't tell us which screen size they'd choose if Apple offered both. At most, it tells us that people are willing to put up with a lack of choice because its other features are viable enough... for a while, at least. Just as when the iPhone lacked 3G, GPS, MMS, video, etc.

3.5" too small

I have had every iteration of iPhone. Have loved all of them. For years this was about iOS and the hardware. There was nothing remotely close. I remain of that view vis a vis the OS. But I really think HTC and Samsung are catching up on the hardware. I am just back from four days in HK - smartphone heaven. You have never seems more smartphone penetration. Ride on the MTR (subway/ tube) and you will see hundreds of people sporting the latest in phones. Tons of iPhones to be sure, but TONS of android phones, and many of them 4.6" screens and bigger. I saw many, many people with Galaxy Notes, complete with integrated fold over leather covers. That screen is incredible and I actually could see myself with one of them.

My initial reaction to all of them was "gawd those this are huger - who would schlep those things around?". But I spent some time checking them out, holding them in stores there. And seeing everyone with them made me realize that people have them in their jeans pockets with no issue. Really.

Let's face it, our smartphones these days are making fewer and fewer calls. I think the case for an extra inch of screen real estate gets stronger every day. Particularly given the incredible displays the phones have. What made sense five years ago for the iPhone doesn't necessarily make sense now.

Last word: the build quality and design of some of the top HTC/Sammy phones is pretty crazy. Many are using high quality plastics and gorilla glass. No, not as exotic as an iPhone 4/4s, but a pleasure to hold nonetheless. And, easier to hold then an iPhone with no case or bumpers. My point being that the larger smartphones can be very manageable.

I think when the next iPhone update comes out it's likely to have a 4" screen or close to that. That's just my opinion!
I myself like the iPhone just the size it is, I've checked out some droids & some other phones with the bigger screens and they are just to big to carry in my pocket. Also the screens don't look half as clear and the iPhone just seems to be the perfect size. I do hope they make the screen close to or a 4" without increasing the overall size a whole lot. I like the idea I saw on MacRumors showing mockups of an edge to edge screen prior to the release of iPhone.
:cool::apple::apple::apple:

BTW I would never get a droid or anything other then iPhones regardless of size, I've had iPhones since the release of the first model. iOS is by far the best OS.

The current screen size of the iPhone 4S is perfect. Steve Jobs demonstrated that fact. If you require a larger screen to watch baseball, movies, games, or videos, get an iPad

I do not want a larger phone!

I do agree with you and yes get an iPad if you need bigger. But I would like to see a bigger screen on the same basic platform. Like I said in my last post maybe an edge to edge screen that keeps the phone close to the same size.
I don't believe a phone over 4" is going to be comfortable in a pocket. My brother and father have Droids and they do complain about it being to big to carry in pocket. They both have iPads and love them, they plan on switching to iPhones when the 5 come out.

An edge to edge screen on the existing iPhone footprint would be totally awesome!

Some of the arguments here make no sense hehe. Often we read about how people are choosing Android leaps and bound above ios and this means Android is better. However, when people are choosing the 3.5" iphone over any other phone in history, it means they are just settling because they have no choice hehe. Sounds like just running with whatever argument is convenient for you.

I think the far more likely reason that iPhone sells probably 3000% more then any other phone is because people don't care and like the iPhone for reasons other then it's screen! To some here, the more logical reason is that the majority of them want larger screens, can get larger screens with Android if they want it, but then proceed to buy iphones 37:1 compared to other individual phones. Hehe some of these theories are hilarious! :D

if Apple comes out with a big screen, of course some people will choose that model. I just don't get how people here are just assuming that the majority will based on some polls on some internet forum, which probably reflects less then half a percent of iPhone users hehe

LTE: Rubbish, at least in UK
3.5": Was hoping for 4
Microdock: Makes all my cables useless.

Hope this rumour is utter BS.

I can understand it might be rubbish in the UK, but in the United States the difference between AT&T's fake 4G and Verizon's true 4G (LTE) is equivalent to the difference between dial-up internet and broadband DSL/Cable.

There is a very real and tangible difference - LTE is a MUST have for the new iPhone. In fact, Apple simply cannot market the iPhone in 2012 as a premium device without it. Also, I would like to add, the battery life impact of LTE on mobile devices is entirely overblown.

What rock do you live under? Have you stepped foot into ANY electronics store in the last 2 years? Hold the iPhone up to any of the other smartphones - it has a smaller screen in comparison. The vast majority of new smartphones being made and marketed are using larger screens. This is not up for debate: people want larger screens as Apps become more powerful and complex.

I'm sorry, but that's just a silly comment.

An iPad wouldn't fit in my shirt or jeans pocket. A 4.65" screened Galaxy Nexus does, and I even forget it's there sometimes.

Many/most of us use our smartphones for much more than just phone calls, and a larger display is very handy for that, and for us older folk to begin with.

I do not want a larger phone!

Do you have a case on your current phone? If so, it's larger already.

Again, I think what worries some iOS users is that Apple currently only brings out one new model a year. So, unlike Android users, Apple customers have no choice when it comes to what a new phone has.

There's also the well known Mother Duck syndrome, where the first smartphone we use imprints itself on us, and we tend to want others like it.

Apple has a decision to make. Either they bring out two models at the same time to make everyone happy, or they risk losing customers with just one model that's either the same or larger. Yes, they'll still sell millions, but they just barely sold more than Samsung last year as it was. The question is, what will Cook do? He's far more pragmatic than Jobs.

Over any *single* phone, yes, but collectively, there are more Android smartphones out there than iPhones. And that gap is increasing every quarter.

That doesn't mean Android is better, I have an Android phone and I hate many things about it. I can't wait to have the new iPhone. But only if it catches up to the times and moves to a larger display like everyone else is doing.

Nor does it suggest they're not tired of 3.5" screens. It could simply mean they're willing to keep buying the iPhone at the present size.

We won't know which size people prefer until/unless Apple offers both at the same time.

That assumes iPhone users buy iPhones because they are iPhones and not because they like iOS, and the iPhone form factor. If that were true then Apple wouldn't need to annually upgrade iOS b/c Android, Windows Phone would not be true competitors. I don't think that is the case.

Typically, when consumers tire of a product, or it no longer meets their needs, they do look elsewhere. Just take a look at all the once great brand icons that today are considered mediocre at best, out of biz at worst.

Yes i know this but the number of iPhones being sold are increasing every quarter too. It's not like iPhone sales had been declining every quarter for the last two years hehe. I understand people want bigger screens, but it's not some doomsday scenario as some here would have you believe hehe. People choose iPhone and ios for far far far more then screen size hehe. If Apple releases a bigger screen it'll be popular. If they don't, their LTE iPhone well still outsell all the 3g and 4g Android phones individually by not even a remotely close margin hehe. People simply don't care about things like this unless you're on a forum preaching the death of Apple :D

It's just so funny the theories that people come up with every single quarter that is supposed to sound the death knell for ios and apple.

First it was lte. To the doomsdayists an iPhone without lte meant Apple was done. 37m sold later...

Now it's screen size! Hehe really? Screen size will be what destroys apple? Some people are quite entertaining here hehe :D

Yep. People are not going to just keep buying something they're tired of, especially to the tune of 37m a quarter. The mere suggestion of that is hilarious hehe :D

I have to agree with this personally. I NEVER owned an iphone bcuz I have been on sprint forever( best plans for the money ) and i refused to switch carriers and pay the extra fees to have one. So I have been on android which I Like alot for many reasons which I will not go into now. I own many apple computers and convinced many friends and family to move over to apple also. The ONE time I actually used an iphone is when I found a new 4s in the street and I was looking through the contacts and messages to try to figure out who the owner was so I could return it. I was pretty lost trying to figure out how to navigate the damn thing which at the time struck me as odd since Im pretty handy with OSX. That coupled with the screen being so small turned me off but I did feel that the build was slightly better than my android. Now that sprint has the iphone I would consider getting one( only unlimited plan left ) if the screen was larger. My 2 cents
