Oh hey, a rename your next iPhone thread.
Why would they call the fifth generation iPhone the iPhone 4S? Are they doing to call the sixth generation iPhone the iPhone 5?
The 3GS was called that because it was the third generation iPhone.

Ok. So while I personally don't believe it I'll be called the 4S it certainly is a possibility. The 3GS had NOTHING to do with being the 3rd gen iPhone. It was the "iPhone 3G Speed" because it was visually identical to the 3G but faster. Rumor is the 5th gen will be visually identical to the iPhone for so an "iPhone 4 Speed" (or iPhone 4S) certainly is a possibility.

I personally believe that the name 3GS served two purposes. The one mentioned in your post, and the one mentioned in the post above yours.

it's not.

they could have given the iPhone 4 a 'feature' name, like 'HD',

Apple is happy to have escaped the clusterfudge of having a 2nd gen. device being called "3G".
Also, the iPhone 5 will be the first iPhone people will have had to wait for longer than 12 months. You think they're gonna go as far as to name it in a way that would indicate nothing more than a certain spec bump?

"so, you've been waiting for this for 16 months, there you go, the iPhone 4S ... it's basically the iPhone 4 but with more SPEED"
that's not how Apple marketing works.

they could've called the iPad 2 ("iPad S") ... they didn't ...

Well no, the iPad 2 had a aesthetic change unlike the iPhone 3G to 3GS so no, plus the iPad 2 added a camera so it makes no sense at all to even suggest an iPad S name (doesn't even sound good from a marketing perspective).

The idea of it being an iPhone 5 to stick to each generation makes sense. I'm kinda hoping/thinking that it won't be an iPhone 4S because of the delay in the launch. If we're waiting more than 12 months for just an S I'm gonna be very turned off Apple (especially after my new Macbook Pro experience). On the other hand, it's gonna feel weird when we start getting to the iPhone 15.

Hopefully it'll be the eyePhone by then :D

I'm really crazing an actual revolution again. Not another, OMG, we just caught up with everyone else but did it slightly better thing again. Please let that be the reason for the delay!

Like I said in another thread.

The first phone was called the iphone.
The 2nd gen phone was called the iphone 3G (they never had phone named iphone 2).
The 3rd gen phone was called the iphone 3gs
The 4th gen phone was called the iphone 4
The next phone will be called the iphone 5, they cant call it the iphone 4s since its going to confuse people again and if they were go call it the iphone 4S they would have to skip over 5.

So they will just call it the iphone 5 and from here on the will just go with the next number in line.

I completely agree. The first few generations did a good job of defining what was significant about the phone. But now that the 4 came and is almost on it's way out, they can't confuse the common-folk by jumping off of the numerical naming convention.

also, i'm not sure there'll be any specific feature that they might even name the phone after, and i'm not sure anyone would be psyched about the 'S' generation every other year. the 3GS was named out of desperation

I respectfully disagree. It was a nice coindedence.

right, I agree wholeheartedly

First of all, I started out my post by saying I don't believe Apple will call it the 4S. But the fact remains that we don't know what the 5th gen iPhone will have. Most of the rumors have indicated same case, 5mp or 8mp camera, no LTE, no NFC, and A5. If the main difference is the A5 chip, then apple could conceivably call it the 4S, but I certainly hope they don't (and don't think they will) due to the confusion that was caused from the 3G/3GS fiasco.

they could've called the iPad 2 ("iPad S") ... they didn't ...

this guy says it best.

I mean iPad S? Really?

exactly.

It made no sense going from an iPhone 3G to an iPhone 3, in a marketing standpoint. Consumers want to see something new, different, something added on. Plus it would be too confusing. I know that a lot of people were saying "oh you have an iPhone 3G? so it only has 3 gigabytes of storage?"
The iPhone 4 came in line with the iPhone generations, and as the iPad 2 event pointed out.. Apple is pretty particular with it's generation naming.
Until the official name, the iPhone 5 suffices.

5th gen iPhone, A5 chip, iOS 5.. everything points to an iPhone 5.

There hasn't been enough iPhone upgrades to suggest that there is a pattern, all the iPhone 4S believers have this tick-tock pattern:

Original iPhone = iPhone 1
iPhone 3G = iPhone 2
iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3
iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
iPhone 4S = iPhone 5?
iPhone 5 = iPhone 6?
iPhone 5S = iPhone 7?
iPhone 6 = iPhone 8?

See, it doesn't make sense.

Personally, i hope Apple picks up on the Roman numerals; iPhone V.

Right that's the reason a 4S would be hard to pull off. Because the next one, in my opinion, would still be called the iPhone 6, skipping the "5" nomenclature altogether. Or, more likely, it would force them to end the numbering scheme (for at least a generation or two) and use descriptive terms. Honestly I would prefer that anyway.

iPhone 5
iPhone 6
iPhone 7
iPhone 8
iPhone 9
iPhone 10
???

A bit too dull and unapple-like. It's too bad they need naming convention at all. The iPad is now the ONLY other apple product that actually has changed it's name from just typical upgrades and refreshes.

Side note: I wish iOS upgrade got cool nicknames like OS X.
