I thought the new apple tv had USB type c?

It does but the remote charges via lightning.

It's an interesting and confusing setup as the Apple TV doesn't have a normal USB port so you will have to use another device to charge the remote and it doesn't come with a wall adaptor. That's a conversation for another thread in another forum though.

Since Apple seems to focus way too much about getting the iPhone thinner & thinner, a bigger connector won't get on our iPhones (imo).

Funny when Apple introduced on Mac Book - everyone thought it a bad idea and now want it on other devices

The new Mac accessories were just released with Lightning, the new Apple TV uses lightning on the remote and the iPad Pro is also a Lightning device. 2 months ago I would have agreed but it looks like Lightning is here to stay a little while longer.
Can't it be both? Lighting cords now plug into USB ports, maybe they will stick with lighting input on the phone itself, but the new USB on the other side?

Are you referring to a future cable with Lightning on one side and USB-C on the other? Maybe its possible in a long long time but currently EVERYONE has something with a standard USB port, mainly a computer. If Apple start making cables that go in to USB-C then 99% of the market is alienated, even those who go by the brand new 4K iMac tomorrow...

If that's not what you're talking about, I'm sorry. Ignore this post :p

Yes, that's what I thought apple would do sooner or later. Stick with the lightning on one side, and USB-C on the other. I also thought the new imacs would have USB-C ports, too, so I'm not doing so well on guesses lately.

It seems Apple is throwing all logic out of the window recently when deciding what connections need to be on which devices. I also would have expected at least one USB-C connection on the new iMacs.

And while we are at it, what's the deal with the ports always (AFAIK) being on the left side of the macbooks? If you want to use a corded mouse, you have wrap it around the machine to get it to the right side. I'm assuming most mac users are right handed since left handed people are the creation of the devil and probably use window machines.

I feel they will stick with their proprietary lightning connector on their mobile device for as long as they possibly can. The only thing I think we will see is a USB-C connector on the other end.

Apple makes a lot of money selling lightning cords and adapters plus 3rd party pays licensing fees. If EU rules cause them to have to do something I think they would just include an adapter in the box before they kill that cash cow.

yes but USB-C is the port to end all ports. Imagine having one cable for everything. No matter what phone, tablet, laptop or desktop you have one cable can connect them all to one another. No more charger confusion. If i have a dell computer you could use my charger to charge your iPhone.

A lot of companies that had USB-C planned had to back off from their plans because the current USB-C chips that deal with power, display and other data throughputs are apparently just unreliable enough that manufacturers don't ship products with them. A lot of things got cancelled, including that Hub+ USB-C hub for the MacBook because of unreliable chips.

I think that's also a reason why the new iMacs didn't get USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 on the 27" iMac since Intel's CPUs support the technology. The dedicated chips handling data are just not good enough yet.

Terrific point. My 6s plus died last week and I still can't figure out how to charge it. I've only had a lightning port device for 3+ years now and it's not getting any easier. Someone please halp?

Seriously, what exactly does usb-c accomplish?? Does it charge faster? Does it move data faster (than the nand memory can read/write)? Isn't usb-c just the end and not the protocol?

Who cares about this mix & match stuff? Why do we need a standard cable? Each phone comes with a cable!

I believe it does everything faster plus you can charge from a laptop to a phone since power goes both ways. (TWSS). And its smaller and can connect no matter which way the tip is (you know, no more flipping the cable upsidedown because you're holding it wrong). And I think USB-C is what they call the connector, 3.1 is the protocol.

Honestly, name one time Apple has ever cared about standardization? Apple is notorious for proprietary chargers/interfaces and the such - I don't see them changing course now.

FWIW, I think it would be a stupid move. Why change for the sake of change? What are we gaining? Lightning is thin and at this point everyone has them - in excess - similar to the mountains of 30 pin cables everyone had. I don't know why people are crying about this so much - I guess people just love change for the sake of change. I just got all of my iOS devices to lightning (finally - my iPad was the last hold out) and would rather not fragment them again.

/end rant

I believe it does everything faster (I can honestly say I never once thought my lightning connection was slow) plus you can charge from a laptop to a phone since power goes both ways (I can already charge my phone from my laptop - maybe you mean I can charge my laptop with my phone but if that's what you mean then that is silly - my phone never has much power to spare). (TWSS). And its smaller and can connect no matter which way the tip is (the connector is already small and reversible - I think I've read somewhere that lightning is already thinner than USB-C)(you know, no more flipping the cable upsidedown because you're holding it wrong). And I think USB-C is what they call the connector, 3.1 is the protocol.

Maybe because they arent on the left side? Airs and pros have usb on both sides.

I didn't know that about charging now (from laptop to phone), does the laptop have to be plugged in to do that? The small and reversible line was more about the difference between current USB to USB C, not to lightning.

I sit corrected again, it must just be the macbook line (or the ones I happened to own/see at work) that have the ports only on the left side. I hate that.

My laptop doesn't need to be plugged in to charge the phone but that's probably more a feature of the laptop than the cable, isn't it?

Gotcha on the reversible point. I wouldn't mind that for my power brick but I still would prefer they leave lightning alone.

OK, I looked it up and see where I got it wrong. Its the other way around:

Type-C USB also allows for bi-directional power, so apart from charging the peripheral device, when applicable, a peripheral device could also charge a host device. All this means you can do away with an array of proprietary power adapters and USB cables, and move to a single robust and tiny solution that works for all devices. Type-C USB will significantly cut down the a amount of wires currently needed to make devices work.

What do you think the chances are that Apple will ditch Lightning and opt for USB C starting this fall for the iPhone? (And following suit with the iPad too.)

Personally I think they will stick with lightning for the next 2 years but USB C would allow for a potential new universal standard for headphone jacks in the future.
