iphone 7, yes. iPhone 6S, no. Have they ever done any external hardware changes in the "s" model? (outside of antenna gate).

In my opinion lighting will last for another 3-4 years at least. They don't need to move to USB-C, is thicker and lots of accessories for iPhones and iPads are lighting compatible, so it'd be an hassle for their customer base.

That is really the least of their concern. They switched to lightning without any regard to the consumer. I would be shocked if USB-C was not on the iPhone 7. Android is doing the same thing...all new android M devices will have USB-C.

As much as an inconvenience it would be to everyone who has piled in the lightning accessories since the iPhone 5, I think the convenience of every portable device having the same cable far outweighs that.

I've never liked proprietary cables. There's no reason why everything can't run off USB type C now.

This may be the last generation using lightning, as the EU have ruled Apple to use standardised USB cables within 2017. I guess we will see the move along a new phone design, so next September upon the launch of iPhone 7, Apple most certainly will utilise usb-c also in their iPad and iPhones. Having a single charger for MacBooks, iPhones and iPads is a big plus in my book. This ruling is not only for Apple to follow, but for all phone manufactures.

Though the increased RAM and CPU power in the 6S tempts me, I will hold on to my phones (6 and 6+) until a new design comes around in 2016.

They switched to lighting after several years with the old 30pin connector and it was the only way to make smaller iPhones. The lighting connector is only 3 yeas old, it is too soon to replace it and as I said USB-C is ticker so it doesn't allow to make thinner smartphones.

Negative. Apple is in full compliance with the universal charger law. Their Chargers have a USB TypeA port, and are universal.

European parliament wrote "The iPhone 5 can be used with an adaptor allowing it to be connected to the common charger."

Apple ships a USB TypeA to Lightning adapter cable with every iPhone, allowing it to be plugged into universal chargers.

They switched for progress...
Observe usb.org scrambling to catch up with a similarly convenient, reversible connector. Which Android wouldn't have if it wasn't for Apple prodding the industry.

I live in Europe, and not any of my iPhones included an adapter in the box. I think 7 will have usb-c. Since the phone is getting a few 0.1mm thicker as well, we are certainly going to see this in the next gen.

In a way magsafe was way smarter than usb c, still it was used in the new rMB.

Apple has always included the adapter. Still does. I just checked the uk apple page

Shows the universal common charger, and the adapter cable.

I was pretty happy to get away from magsafe 2. I consistently would have to replug it in b.c the first time didn't always take.

As far as I understand it, if the current recommendation that has been linked to becomes law (it hasn't yet) then Apple will just have to start including the micro-USB to lightning adaptor with every phone in 2017 and they will be compliant.

Nowhere in any of these has USB C been mentioned, the European proposal specifically states Micro-USB.

When (if ever) do you think this will be the charger for the iPhone. I know it would piss a lot of people off because they would have to but more chargers again but I believe it to be needed for faster charging and data rates. I would much rather have wireless charging first but why not both at the same time?

The new Mac accessories were just released with Lightning, the new Apple TV uses lightning on the remote and the iPad Pro is also a Lightning device. 2 months ago I would have agreed but it looks like Lightning is here to stay a little while longer.

I thought the new apple tv had USB type c?

I feel like apple is going to let Samsung with the Galaxy s7 and note 7 penetrate the market with USB type c and apple can come in later and say we are going to standardize the chargers and look like heroes. The cheep USB type c chargers will already be out on amazon so people will have less to complain about. I think Type c is coming faster then we expect.

note 7? what happen to the note 6? that would come 1st be for the note 7

I don't think that they will ever change the ports on the iPhone/iPad/etc from lightning to USB-C. Unless the EU really does force it and no longer allows adaptors.

I do think we will see the power adaptors change from USB-A to USB-C eventually. I was kind of surprised that didn't happen this year. Now I'm thinking next year with the iPhone 7 we might see a new power adaptor with a USB-C port and a new USB-C to lightning cable included, and then the new iPads and other devices following that.
