To be fair, I NEVER saw anyone claim to like the notch, only that they don't care.
I think users understand its just required. I’d prefer without but we are not their yet and I prefer the benefits the iPhone X brings already.

I'll answer your question with a question - why do you think Android is trending toward the notch, with Google including the notch support in the upcoming P version?

The notch is going to turn out to be the ultimate punk...convice all of the competition to add a notch, then drop it like a hot potatoe.

To offer a corollary, Apple never did get rid of the camera bump either. If anything, Apple appears to have doubled down on it!

Good point and is not going away anytime soon. With current technology they need a certain amount of space for the camera module so either they make their phones thicker or the camera bump will remain.

As for the notch I think they'll get rid of it as soon as possible, but 2019 seems a bit optimistic to me. If they were so close to release an iPhone without a notch why not wait a couple of years?

Well the phones have been trending thicker since the 6, but the bumps remain so far... I’m just hoping they will move up from the 1/3” sensors to the now flagship standard 1/2.5” (some phones have been using these or better since about 2010!) but because a larger sensor needs a longer focal length to maintain field of view, that means the modules have to be thicker.
