I think it is more likely

-M1 with 4+4 CPU cores and 7 or 8 GPU cores based on A14
-M2 with faster 4+4 CPU cores and 10+ GPU cores based on A15
-M2X with faster 8+2 CPU cores and 16 or 32 GPU cores based on A15

Then going forwards the lower end units (MBA, low end MBP, 24"iMac, iPad Pro) will get M3, M4, M5 etc and the higher end units (14-16" MBP, large iMac) will get the M3X, M4X, M5X etc with perhaps an M3Z etc reserved for the Mac Pro.
I was talking about this year
They will not call the mba air M2 for sure since its just a faster clock m1 with additional 2 gpu cores
But again these are just names in the end
The point i was making is that the mac SoC family in 2021 will end at number 3

I really like the current M1 Air model. I thought about possibly getting the 14" but, I am going to stick with the Air line for now and wait on the new model. I really don't need all the rumored ports that are alleged to be coming to the rumored 14" model, nor do I need 32+ GB of RAM or dual / triple monitor support.

It seems the next air will be the best for you

Here’s hoping for a 15” (or 16, whatever, as long as it’s larger than 13”) Air. Many people, including me, would love a larger screen yet still thin and light laptop, but have no need of a “Pro” machine.

As a new fan and owner of the MacBook Air M1 I really like the system but for the life of me, with Apple being a tech giant / graphics powerhouse the GPU's are always 5 years behind. Your asking people to pay premium prices and still having to drop setting in classic games to get them to work at steady frames.

Granted the M1 chip is new and needs time to get the tools etc, but Apple needs to improve GPU capabilities in the laptops more than anything else IMHO.

The next couple of years are going to be interesting.

The only real requirement for Apple's transition to AS is actually the internals, so waiting for a redesign can get tricky and we might wait a while for the product we want.

Thankfully for me that was the iPad Pro 12.9", but it was good to see the iMac be the first to switch full-on.

I really think we'll get a redesigned Mac during WWDC, but I'm not holding my breath.

For the first time in forever I'm more interested in the actual software side of WWDC (since I'm not a developer).

So, instead of playing old PC games at 1080p 30fps it'll go up to 37fps.

From the purchaser of a 2020 MBA (i5), I feel like the best course of action is to stay away from Apple rumor sites for at least a year after a major purchase 😂
Do you enjoy your device or not?
Maybe even earning money with it? So what is the point... There will be always something better.

Yeah Air no longer stands for "light", but for "lite", as in iPad Air vs iPad Pro. I'd say both MB Air and MB Pro will look indentically, apart from XDR screen and ports on Pro and more cores/RAM/storage inside.

That sounds like a very underwhelming and yet unnecessary upgrade. 2 more graphic cores ain't going to change anything to what is already a good machine. Either make it a bigger upgrade or don't bother.
Maybe it's getting a better screen and/or a smaller, lighter design.
