(edit) ... wait for the 2500 since it's what you really need, or step down to the 1900 if you need it NOW.

I love Epson myself and probably won't change, but you could always try looking at HP.

I'm going to stick with Epson - easier to find 3rd party ink, great paper selection, and good tech support. Was hoping to buy the MBP, printer, and a new AP express around this time but maybe now it will just be the Epson R1900. Thanks for the input.

The likelihood of Apple releasing redesigned MBPs in June with the new chips is basically zero. Try late July/Aug, and even then there is no reason to believe that Apple are going to redesign as well as update. I, for one, am holding out for a redesign (+ a 12 or 13 inch MBP) but I'm not holding my breath.

Very sensible, I don't see a redesign until July or August either, some time around or after WWDC. And even then I am really only hoping for a more refined design, as opposed to the very consumer/toy looking MBA design. The last thing the MBP needs is a slimmer case.

As for a 12" or 13", I agree, I would like to see one, but I am on the side of the fence that knows that Apple won't release 3 different 13" books, a MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro with very overlapping features and overlapping prices.

As of now, I consider the 12" PB (which I loved and still love) to be thoroughly replaced by either the BlackBook or the Air. Once Intel makes better integrated GFX cards for the 13" books, there's really not going to be a need for a 13" Pro book.

I've definitely made, and seen, significant (and realistic) changes that probably won't come until a case redesign:

1) Easily swappable hard drive. The way the case is designed now, simply adding an access door in the current drive location would compromise structural integrity (i.e. case stiffness). So, probably not a minor redesign.

2) eSATA port. Maybe a minor redesign, maybe not. (And, no, the existence of the expressCard 34 slot isn't sufficient - one can't boot from a drive connected via an eSATA expressCard, and there are ongoing compatibility issues - a native eSATA port would be great for high-performance computing on the road).

Any of you who want these things (or something else), don't just complain here, go to the Apple feedback page and ask for it!

I know EXACTLY what I want. I want a MBP that helps me one current problem that I often have with my current PB. If I'm having a sandwich or a pita for lunch, and just by accident, a piece of lettuce of some small crumb lands on my keyboard, I'd like it to not fall into the smallest crevice and hide. I'd like a MBP with a keyboard that give easy access to cleaning and removing all those smudges/food remains. Now that's the future of technology!

... and to weigh in at under 3 pounds! lol

Yes. More like a keyboard that isn't exposed to all of the elements and dust and other things that could come from the air. It doesn't have to be a MacBook keyboard, but can it just not have gapping holes in it?

Yes... and still have the specs listed in my signature.

There's no way they are going to release a 13" macbook pro because they are not going to have 3 laptops competing at the 13" screen level like somebody stated before.

I am eagerly waiting for the macbook pro case to be redesigned but i don't think it's going to happen for a while. The montevina chips aren't going to need a whole new case redesign, so I believe that the case redesign won't be announced until January 2009 atleast....

Or maybe they won't be redesigned at all due to the fact that the cases are fine the way they are..."Don't fix something that isn't broken" - Maybe a little slimmer and better cooling system at most..

I really hope they do redesign soon, to make it look more like the iMac with a black lip or something...that would be uber-sexy

The design of the MBP won't change because it's needed just for technical reasons IMO. It will happen because the two things Apple does well is offer an outstanding OS and beautifully designed hardware. The current form of the MBP is/was great, but it is also old. Look at the design progression of iMacs and iPods. The original 1G iPod is still beautiful (as it was inspired by Dieter Rams) but the forms progressed and changed. As they do with fashion, automobiles, and pretty much everything else.

Agreed. I think the design as of today is still sleek and impressive. I can see minimal exterior changes along the lines of a redesign. I don't think it will look that much different. My view of it would be, new black keys, mag latch, maybe alittle thinner and lighter. If anything they might get rid of the SSD like the air, which would suck. I personally am happy with my new mbp. and really don't mind if its redesigned in june.

Agreed. A MacBook Pro 13" would have to be like a MacBook and a MacBook Air's offspring - LED backlit, aluminium, upgradeable RAM and HD, multi touch plus with a punchier GPU... there's no where for it to fit, especially considering the $1799 pricepoint of the MBA versus the $1999 MBP.

Time for us to stop the 12" powerBook revival pipedream and hold out for more impressive specs on the Air, I think!

i sure hope it is before the back to school promotion. anyone else have thoughts on this?

i hope so too, i'll have to be making a macbook purchase before i start college in august, and i would be super pissed if they hold off untill after the college rush to update.

I hope a major MPB update comes soon - June/July - as well. But if you need an MBP, and this is your first foray into buying a MAC, you would be very happy with the current MBP.

I'm typing this on an IBM X40 that weighs only 3lbs. It's all I need for mail, surfing, and Amazon.com. The ONLY reason my family and I would ever need anything close to the power of a new MacBook Pro would be to edit and BURN HD videos that were taken with a Sony HC-7 1080i camera. Final Cut Express would be perfect but without a BD-R there is absolutely no point. Until that time all of our 1 hr tapes will just have to wait. I read the other day that Sony was in talks with apple about Blu-ray, so maybe sometime this year. Who knows. Of course the DDR3 with the Centrino 2 and maybe wi-max would be nice too! But until Steve stops dragging his feet, no deal.

Wow... I think you really nailed it there. I don't see the Air becoming a dedicated main machine, but we could hope for that new faster chip Intel is coming out with (Atom), larger SSD or faster 1.8" drive (announced), and possibly a juggling of the insides to allow for at least..... at the very very very utterly bottom of the barrel least ONE more USB port.

And beefier GFX of course... ;)

Expensive!

The only thing im hoping 4 is a price drop! If i lived in the states well then i would think the price 4 a mac would be nice, but no , living here in sweden we have to pay 4000$ for a MBP that cost 2799$ in US .. thats ... thats pure evil... We have to pay more outside of the states so people in us can get their mbp to a small price! . the dollar is really low right now for us in sweden, but prices on mac doesnt change.... so what will i do , ill take the next flight to NY and spend 1 night there, and on the flight home ill have a new MBP with me for the same price, only i got the bonus trip to NY with it :D

yeah, it is my first mac. while i'm really eager to finally make the plunge, i dont really need a laptop right now. so i'll just deal with my aged pc desktop until this summer, that way i'll be able to have the most up to date macbook if they would update. oh, and i'll probably just get one of the higher end macbooks, i'm going to be an education major, so i probably wouldnt really utilize the extras of a pro...

Either way you win. As long as you don't have to use Vista! This NYT article says even the top Microsoft execs have major problems with Vista. Of course!

I was waiting to buy a mac until penryn then on the Tuesday it came out I took the plunge on the low end 15inch, installed 4GB of ram myself and I've never been happier. I'm trying to hold off on doing any .NET work so I don't have to taint this beautiful machine with Vista/XP.

Great! Although if you do taint your MBP, do it with XP and not Vista, at least, that seems to be the advice of many of the execs at MS.

nah - vista seems to be stabilizing here lately - i haven't had any issues with it since i switched (note i did not call it upgraded) a couple of months ago from XP - but i've heard the Mac OS is much better than either
