Those having glossy screens sure will need an automated screen wiper to go with their new laptops. They've got no touch screens and we take care to not touch them, but eventually the screens get dusted and/or fingerprinted all over.

Look at this iPad. Isn't it disgusting?

Sure it's not how it looks in ads. It's a real thing in real use.

I also expect a screen wiper in iPad 3, by the way. Screw the liquid metal and gimme the ol' good wiper, please. Or make it matte/Pixel Qi, for heaven's sake.

You sure have some dirty finger .... time to wash your hands - you should do it at least once a week.

I would wait. Considering Lion is coming out also, you might as well wait for the next refresh which I'm sure will be optimized for Lion.

Optimized for Lion? How do you optimize hardware for an OS? Wouldn't it be the other way around? And I'm pretty sure that Lion will run optimally on any Mac hardware that supports it.

I can't imagine waiting a year on a new case design especially if you need a new computer right now. And holding out to buy a new computer until Lion is released? That's just nuts, especially considering how simple it is to upgrade from SL to Lion (I've done it with the Lion Developer Preview and it's trivial).

OH Crap ! I was getting ready to use my tax return to get the new MBP 17 and update my 2009 or so MBP. Now I am going to have to wait.... Just great

shoo my mbp is 2006... ouch... still running strong (i tell myself) and will have to wait it out... i hate this site sometimes....

What about the screen? Are they finally moving to 16:9 screens?
That would be bloody awful. 16:9 computers screens means more scrolling...

I'm using a 15" late 2008, the first unibody model, and I got it at launch. Still in top shape, upgraded ram to 8GB, and added a fast SSD, so it still feels like new. :D

I would only want to upgrade it these conditions are met:
1) No sharp edge (I think the skin on my wrists is now thicker thanks to 2.5 years of abuse)
2) Matte option (I didn't have the option in late 2008, grr..)
3) 1920x1200 option on the 15"

Mee too, although I only upgraded to 4gb ram. I believe our model only utilizes up to 6gb.

I also have a first gen unibody, and its's funny to read people talking about "finally" upgrading their 09 or '10 laptop. I'm not even out of warranty yet! A good 2 more years at least before I need something new (knock on wood).

I'm assuming liquid metal cases, SSD-only storage, the elimination of ethernet and FW800 ports, and the removal of the optical drive all in the name of thinner and lighter. Of course, since they already have the MBA, they can still keep them thicker and use all that extra space they're saving from losing the optical drive and additional ports for better hardware, so it's a win-win.

This would seriously tick me off, gigabit ethernet is a huge must for me, WiFi is never as reliable or fast. I mean I suppose if I could have a thunderbolt adapter or something I could live, but if I can't have ethernet I won't buy it.
Also if they get rid of FireWire I kind of expect USB 3 to be supported, sure we have TB but I would like to see both.

I do however want to see the optical drive removed as it takes up so much space in the laptop and I never use it. I figure I would still have a nice external at my desk (along with my 2 external hard drives) but I would never miss it while on the road. I just don't see the point of using so much space and being forced to carry around an optical drive I never use when I carry my laptop.
I know a lot of people cry fowl on removing the optical drive but think about it, the only time I use mine is rip music or install an OS, both of which I only do while at my desk. Wouldn't an external drive suffice?
And I'm not saying remove it so we can have a MBA, no remove it so we can get better CPU/GPUs, cooling and battery life in a small machine. Sure it wouldn't hurt to be a little smaller too, but I mainly want more power and that disc drive is holding these laptops back if you ask me.

iPad is my new MBP

I've been using Apple Laptops for a little while ~2004 and love them, but the iPad has covered my needs in the field and on the go. I do all my photo sorting on it, most of my writing, editing, and marketing. My 2007 MBP is going strong and I hope to get another year or two from it. But I never use it off its desktop stand.

It is too heavy. I am not a driver, so I carry the thing around on the bus and train and for that, it is simply too much. Even the newer ones are too heavy. My iPad does the trick nicely.

So, I'm looking at purchasing an iMac next year for my home stuff and my wife'll probably go for a MacBook Air. We're happy that Apple are moving forward, but I've got to say: I've given up on laptops for now.

It's unofficial, and the late 2008s are picky, but 8GB sort of works.

I have the latest bios/smc and the Crucial 8GB kit, had it installed over two months ago and it works. Many other people have also confirmed the Crucial kit working with the late 2008s.

I believe it was not possible with earlier smc versions, and I know for a fact that some other 8GB kits do not work even now. (I tried Muskin ram, it did not boot).

As for actually utilizing the entire 8GB instead of just 6GB, I'm not sure. Some people say it's a hardware limitation, and it can't use the entire 8GB. But I've stress tested it with Virtual Machines a number of times, and I've used over 7GB without the system swapping. Or maybe I just can't read mac memory usage stats properly..

Can anyone please explain the whole liquid metal thing to me?
I don't understand how a laptop could be made with metal that's liquid at room temperature.

How does an optical drive make a machine "pro"? It needs to die, particularly in the 13" model and NOT so it can become an Air either.

That space could be repurposed for any of the following:

1. More battery. This would serve at least 95% of the users more often and more practically than a stupid optical drive.

2. Dedicated graphics. Wouldn't that be nice? It's far more "pro" than an optical drive.

3. Another hard drive. Store all your DVDs on one drive if you have to.

There is a chasm of difference between removing the optical drive and putting it to good use and just making a MacBook Air. The Air has a weak processor and limited RAM.

I'd also like to see the ethernet and firewire ports replaced with additional Thunderbolt ports. I know people hate dongles, but it'd be nice to, more or less, choose what the lesser used ports are used for. It would also be cool to drive multiple external monitors.

By the time these machines are released there should be more Thunderbolt devices available. In particular, I want the hubs they've shown at demonstrations. It's the closest thing there is to a docking station.

It really would be nice to see dedicated graphics return to a smaller form factor machine. My 12" PowerBook had them!

I'm sure the design is going to pick up cues from the MacBook Air's, which is a good thing IMO.

I'm hoping for:
- No more optical drive, save the space for more battery.
- 13" MBP gets the high-resolution MBA screen as standard.
- 15" MBP gets the current optional high-resolution screen as standard.
- Anti-Glare screen option available on all models.
- Dedicated GPU on all MBP's including the 13" model (or at least as an option)
- If not primarily SSD at the time, at least high-performance 7200rpm drives as standard.

Retina displays would be killer on the MBP, and would completely rocket them to a different dimension compared to current PC offerings, but I'm not sure if the hardware is ready for Retina notebook/desktop screens yet, but it'd be nice.

I will vote for keeping ani-glare options, remove the optical drive (I think I've used once since 2009) but add one thing:

PLEASE get rid of the wrist slicing sharp edge along the front! I would pay extra for a rounded or sloped edge like the MBA.
