what about a dock for you iphone that slides into the track pad area and becomes your track pad/new multitouch... thing.

It was just a reference to the quote I was quoting. Just talking about ***** being too hot and people suing. Of course it does bring up memories of the old PB's and the ongoing joke about cooking breakfast on it...

awwwwwwe i wanted tacos:(

Does this imply that there's going to be ANOTHER product that is (will be) responsible for the reduction in margins? Either that or the whole laptop and iPod line is to be updated with low margins.

Well they did say the gross margin would stabilize around 30% for the quarter following so what that says to me is that the product/products are going to have a mid/upper 20% margin and combined with things like the iPhone, iMac, and Mac Pro they'll get the gross margin back up to 30. So, my best guess would be a product with a 26% margin and it'll likely be aimed at consumers as the margins on the MBP are high and they don't sell nearly as many of those anyway.

I think I get it...

or at least here is my thoughts.

Apple recently submitted a patent for solar panels under glass screens. I thought this would be super convenient for your iphone as it could help extend battery life even if just for 20 minutes.

Now apply this to computers...

The screen is always bright. The light from the screen could help charge the computer especially if the trackpad was the size of the iphone screen.

Longer battery life i'm assuming would be for blue-ray.
Charge your computer as you watch a movie.

At this point, technology of batteries and power usage of computers are very competitive however i truly believe its these small innovations that make companies like apple special.

Thoughts???
OMG THAT INGENIUS

That would be the most amazing and eco friendly thing I have ever heard of in laptop design. I love it.

How about they put an ultra-dense solar panel behind a glass Apple on the back of the computer? :-D

It would look bad-@$$ with the glass apple and it would also give you some extra juice. Of course if they made the entire laptop screen that way - hello 10+ hr battery life!! :)

and if you dont have a iphone, .....then what, no trackpad. i think that would be a bad idea. watif i dont want an iphone, the bill is ridikulus

you wouldn't HAVE to have an iPhone! They all come with a trackpad, but you could take it out (if you owned an iPhone) and dock it there. You could receive calls thru your computer (already have mic and speaker), as well as hopefully tether it to the 3G. I think that would be pretty awesome! And, if you didn't have an iPhone, it would just be a regular track pad!

Also, wtf to the guy who says that the idea sounds like a Dell idea. Mac thinks simple.

Are you serious? Apple is *by far* a more gadget-loving company than Dell. Dell is the one that only gives the bare-bones essentials in its computers.

Or...iPhone *screen* where the trackpad is.

An extra small display with contextual displays and menus/purpose?

A loupe for taking a manipulable look at things?

That does vaguely fit (and so do a thousand other ideas/directions) under the conference call notion that they are going to take a margin hit for 'technology no one else can compete with.'

Wow that would be cool and would totaly kill vistas inbuilt/external screen suport thing.

Hmmm

I was just thinking to myself yesterday, "it's really easy to clean fingerprints off of this iPhone... Why don't they do a glass trackpad?" Low and behold!

i hate it when ppl are sudenly experts with these tech corporation or seem to kno jobs personally

but i disagree because the new design of the iphone which is more curved than the simplisctic 1st gen would make it more difficult for it to dock, flush with the machine

thanks for the back up. and too the other guy too.

i was honestly just throwing an idea out there. i was hoping for a why it would or would not work replies, not just being called stupid.

ohwell. i guess i know what age that guy is.

to the others that actually replied objections but in a good way. thanks as well.

My G3 iBook is still chugging along quite nicely (heat problems aside) but I've been looking forward to upgrading for a while now. I'm excited at what changes might come to the MB/MBP but at the same time rolling my eyes at the thought of waiting out any bugs that might come with a new design. I've gone from "I'll get a new MB/MBP this summer using the student deal! sweet!"

to "eh. I don't need a new laptop right now, might as well wait until the new revision comes out"

to "oh MAN, this is exciting! new MB here I come!"

to "Jesus tap dancing Christ, I should REALLY know better than to buy a newly revised MB/MBP. I'd better wait until the *next* revision, let 'em work out the kinks a little"

So the vicious cycle repeats. At the rate I'm going, I'll be using my iBook until it's nothing left but a puddle of melted plastic and circuitry b/c I want to "wait 6 more months". I never *ever* thought I'd become one of *those* Mac owners.

I think I'm lucky though. While I'm in the position of having a 5 year old laptop, it's reliable and runs 10.4 smoothly. I don't absolutely NEED a new MB/MBP today (although this could all change tomorrow).

Bring on the new MB/MBP's, let's see what I'm missing

hey dude , im not trying to make you look stupid, i just dont agree with you. i just like debating ppl, i dont think ur dumb.

(i'm doing my 2nd year on the jv debate team and i'm 16, lol)

Just to post my idea of the functionality of the glass trackpad:

This would aid in the quick adoption of multitouch. > the glass trackpad would respond with a color or a symbol to indicate which of the many multi-touch functions that were being utilized at the moment.

If you were scaling a photo in iphoto, as you open pinched the glass trackpad, it would give visual feedback of the multi-touch function and maybe a scale factor as well, almost like snaps in a cad program.

For example, when you were rotating a photo using two fingers, the second finger position would give a color or angle, say 20degrees, etc.

What do you guys think of this type of function?

actually you are at an advantage. when the new revision comes out, the previous version will drop in price. so you will still get a great machine and not have to worry if there will be problems. that is, if the new features are not tempting enough for you to just get a new one.

I don't think I would like a glass touch pad. The iPhone screen is awesome but for a track pad I don't think it would be good. The iPhone screen has more friction than the current macbook pros track pad, which I don't think would be good. I love how little friction the MBP's track pad has. Also I hope they don't make new MBP's sense I just got mine this summer.

OMG perpetual energy! Not gonna happen, the design would be way to inefficient. Good concept though.

The one thing that severely confuses me is the new Appleinsider article and this Macrumors article is could Apple pull this altogether in a month especially if they are waiting for Intel approval? All of this information seems like it may be conflicting.

It wouldn't replace a charger, but add to it. So battery life would be prolonged.

i always like such ideas.

just throwing it out there, so please no insults just constructive criticism etc. i am no engineer.

couldn't they also harness the power created from the spin of the HD?

Apple and Intel have probably made all the arrangements, and AppleInsider is just now picking it up (and AI doesn't know significant details). Also both AppleInsider and 9 to 5 mac agree on a September release - 2 months from now.

couldn't they also harness the power created from the spin of the HD?
How could that be done without slowing down the HD or using more power to spin the HD?
