Apple should add the illuminated keyboard (or make it an option) to the regular macbook.
The macbook would then become an ideal computer for me.

Sorry, but saying that you stand by it doesn't make it so. It's not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing, its a matter of doing the research. I just double-checked the price on the Dell. Matched spec for spec and the Dell is nearly $1400. You have to match it spec for spec my friend. The closest Windows equivalent to Mac OS X Leopard is Vista Ultimate so you will need to upgrade to that. Don't forget to upgrade the battery to match the MacBook. Don't forget to upgrade your wireless to 802.11n and also add bluetooth capabilities. I've compared most of Apple's systems to competitors and it is not the rule that Macs have a premium. There will always be a small difference here and there up or down, but the difference rarely, if ever, comes close to your $500 premium RDF.sorry, I was speaking in general terms and my price knowledge is more in line with macbook pros than macbooks. I'm not here to argue, but I stand by what I said. Apple computers generally command a premium over similarly spec'd PC counterparts. You can always find exception to the rules if you look hard enough. If you don't agree, then stay in your RDF as long as you like.
PS - I just spec'd that very DELL and it costs $1199 vs the $1299 mac.

Since they dropped the price on the iPhone 3G, is it a possibility for the new notebooks?![]()
Fine, so I just spec'd an XPS M1530, as close as I could to the $1999 macbook pro, and it's costing $1,439.
spec'd a HP dvt5 series to as close as possible specs, actually better graphics and HDD capacity, comes out $1,053.99. (this price leads me to question its build quality.)
spec'd a Lenevo Thinkpad T61 15.4", similar or better specs except graphics card is nvidia quadro 128mb, but processor, hdd, and battery is better. $1481.70
I told you I didn't wanna argue and my estimates were based off a macbook pro, but since you gave some of your time to spec the dell, I owed it to you. As you can see, it's not hard to prove my point. I'm all for mac, but macs ARE generally more expensive (especially the macbook pros).
[edit] forgot you said upgrade to vista ultimate, add $100 to each. (not that ultimate really adds much in terms of features...)
imagine the sales rush apple will experience when, in early september they announce an updated macbook line and everyone rushes to get one with the free ipod promotion!! i call it , "The-one-week-hurry-up-and-buy-this-new-mac-before-the-promotion-ends"
i leave for school september 16th and if the new macbook isn't out by then, im toting my imac down for the first weeks.
GIVE ME NEW MACBOOKS BEFORE SEPT.16 OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!!
Say goodbye to beautiful white laptops... *tear*. I can understand why for quality and environmental reasons, but it's a tragedy for the prettiness factor.
My white MacBook shall be cherished.
They better release them in time for the back to school specials. I mean if not new macbooks for the students, then who the hell is their target market? Macbooks are aimed toward students and budget minded consumers. The back to school specials are perfect for releasing the new macbook.
I want it! Damn you Apple, why must you make me wait!![]()
This sucks! Apple will release the new macbooks just after the free iPod touch deal for students expires September 15.
The keyboard part of the book is also a screen, but touchable with pop-up keyboard like iPhone. All Glass. Lastly, the screen should be detachable. This way you can have a laptop or TouchTablet. LOOK.
