I love my SE, it's the only upgrade from my iPhone 5. I hope Apple will realize there are tons of 4-inch users desiring a top of the line performance but under the flexibility of a 4" size phone.

That's the weird thing - I thought the SE had done better than expected, so they should have realised that. I love mine. (Although I might be tempted to upgrade next year.)

Stop disrespecting consumers and industry standards and put in a headphone jack.

Product Line-up is now a huge mess.

In fact, it's like how Apple was before Steve Job's return

One little difference, if Steve were to return now, instead of an Apple on the brink of ruin, he would find that Apple products are selling so well that Apple has grown to be the most valuable company in the world; not with no money, but with world record revenue and hundred of billions in the bank; not with unsold products, but with products selling as fast as Apple can make them.

Indeed, with Apple having the vast majority of the entire cell phone industry profits for the past several years, and now just having reached 104% of it, he'd find his handpicked successor and team had done unbelievably well with the iPhone.

I liked Google's approach - besides battery life and screen size, the Pixels are essentially the same.
And screen resolution. But other than that, yeah i'm sorry the ones who want one handed use have to suffer losses in hardware like the camera.

Yes. There is no longer a tyrant at the he top demanding coherence and unity. So all these Alpha execs end up in their little silos and we end up with brand new iPhones that don't have a cable to connect to brand new MbPs.

You think they should put two cables in each box?

In the pool of iPhone owners, there's a portion who also use a Retina MacBook or new MacBook Pro. Inside those users, there's a smaller segment who still sync to iTunes and plug their phone in.

AirDrop, Wireless sync to iTunes, iCloud... & if you're one of the niche, you can buy a cable.

'Apple, innovate! Change things! Move things forward! Don't let revenue fall!'

*Apple does all the above*

Macrumours readers:

Haha this is what you call "moving things forward?"

Samsung and other lower quality companies have been using OLED for years. Finally when apple decides to use it, they go halfway with it by limiting the option for the big and clunky model only?

Removing a headphone jack and restricting the nicer features to the bigger model only is not innovation or moving things forward. All it is, is stupid. Apple and their decisions this past year have been very schizophrenic and out of touch with their consumers.

Pushing us into a future with wireless headphones by:
1) Releasing wireless Beats headphones and advertising them, competitors don't want to look inferior and will release wireless headphones too / market their own wireless products.
2) Releasing an iPhone without a headphone jack. Users apathy towards wireless headphones is gone - suddenly everyone's talking about it and aware of the issue. Maybe that'll push them into trying wireless headphones.
3) Developing a chip for AirPods + Beats headphones which solves the problems often associated with wireless headphones.

That is using their resources to push things forwards.

By reacting "wahh wahh I need a headphone jack" you're not only being short-sighted but also not learning from history. Flash's absence from iPad. MacBook Air with no optical drive/removable battery. Both were considered user-hostile and generally a bad idea at the time.

Ah ... but it does protect their profit margins ... the whole essence behind product fragmentation, after all, Apple is first and foremost a tech stock play.

Apple's design and engineering group have explicit marching orders to do whatever they have to do to continue to make the product saleable all the while protecting the profit margins.

Why?? Why do they keep fragmenting like this? It's getting crazy to to keep track of all the weird configurations of their products. Five years from now they'll just be a Dell with more expensive machines.

Next years model looks more like a Android version...

A huge mess with MacBooks, iPads and now iPhones... Maybe Tim and jony needs a long good vacation.

Android is not a brand, it's an operating system.

Wow so many whiners here! "Apple is "fragmented"..... waaaaaaa "I don't want the bigger phone but want all the features that fit into a bigger phone" waaaaaaa "Steve is rolling in his grave" waaaaaa "This isn't Steve's apple" waaaaaaa...."apple is dead" waaaaaaaa.... FFS shut up!!

How hard is it to pick the phone you want and buy it no matter how many options there are? What's so hard to understand that a larger phone 7+ can house a dual camera while a smaller phone 7 can't? Steve is dead get the hell over it! See my last sentence. Yeah dead to the tune of billions of dollars.

Just bout my wife a new car..... I was so shocked how fragmented the manufacturers have the line ups!! I couldn't decide between the SE, LX, SX models..... it was sooooo confusing. How can the same company have so many different options for their cars? Man it's a surprise they can get anyone to understand what they're buying.....
[doublepost=1479261104][/doublepost]
Ummmm you can still use your plug in headphones.... no one is stopping you. PLUS there is this really cool replacement for wired headphones.... it's this crazy new thing called blue tooth headphones.
[doublepost=1479261379][/doublepost]
because the smaller phone doesn't have the room for a 2 camera set up..... why is that hard to understand?

What exactly is "overly complicated" about having options to choose from?

Maybe not complicated, but definitely fragmented.

It's not helpful to the user to have one iPhone model with LCD and two with OLED. That introduces confusion, and unnecessary clutter, to the purchasing experience.

Maybe not - for regular customers - they walk in and choose from 3 different sizes: 4.7, 5.5 and 5.8

The folks in this forum will probably go with 5.8 and if you are in yearly upgrade program, it doesn't matter, you simply upgrade the model you have.

How is it a tactic or trick to put larger items (dual camera) into a larger form factor? There isn't enough room in a smaller phone for some of the larger items.... I really don't understand how that's hard for some to grasp.

I am not an engineer, but then again neither are you. Perhaps the dual camera could be hard but I was referring to the features mentioned on this article. There is no reason why all iPhones couldn't have OLED and glass-casing. I will say it once again, Sales Tactic.

I might actually be considering a move to android, this trend in apple to not offer the same features across all models of the phone is getting worse. Now they want to offer the OLED model with all the features only for a premium price. I really feel Apple is pricing themselves out of the market, Android 7.1 is fairly solid and there are quite a few good android phones out there for much less

A bezel-less 4.7" is the perfect size for me. I really don't want to be forced to go larger than 4.7" for key features though--that's obnoxious.

I hope they go back to the old camera module manufacturer. The one built in the iPhone 7 is terrible. Look at dpreview.com watercolor painting everywhere :( the Google Pixel has a much better camera. Much much better

Don't be ridiculous. I have already debunked that myth. NOT EVERY PART OF THE PHONE HAS TO STAY THE SAME SCALE.

and that is the problem, Apple isn't giving you options to choose from. Since you mentioned the package options when buying a car. Yes, a single model will have a different packages of options. But this isn't how Apple does it. You either get the limo-sized ultra expensive luxury item or the bare bones "economy" car. Apple should not restrict features like force touch to the high-end model of their phones while excluding that same feature to other similar devices. This was a stupid move and hindered adoption and artificially fragments the product line. Consistent features across the product line makes sense for phones. It is like Nike selling Air Jordans where only > size 10 have laces.
Maybe they don't like the quality of the smaller OLED screens.... Maybe

People keep saying it would be confusing.... I can't understand what would be confusing about looking at an item..... looking at what it offers and buying or not buying it based on those options.

I guess I am missing the obvious, but how does having different screen types lead to fragmentation?
They aren't just different, but one is visually and in many other ways superior to the other. As the article says, it would mean another iPhone model, splitting the current lineup.

They could fit the dual camera if they didn't have improved battery life as an aim for the 7, but they chose a bigger battery so they couldn't fit it, which is understandable.
But you can't say that it 'doesn't have the room' for an OLED display. It will likely be done because of the limited supply.

An OLED screen has nothing to do with space. How old are you? You like insulting people? What makes you so superior? "Do you understand physics? Features require space." Actually that's design and engineering. Supposedly Apple's long suit.
Yes, I expect great things. This is Apple, the purported leader in advanced design by their self aggrandizing dog and pony shows. Obviously the dual lens takes up more space. Look this is just a money grab by Apple. It's been their MO forever. Withhold features or offer options which force the consumer's hand to buy up. If you recall, the initial iPhone 6 didn't have optical image stabilization. It wasn't a space problem. It was a money grab.
The camera is an important feature on a phone. Apple makes a huge deal out of it. Maybe they should make it as great as their ads proclaim.
A) your whole argument is off because the previous posts weren't referring simply to the type of screen technology but to other features like dual cameras as well. Pay attention if you're going to get all self/righteous.
B) No, I don't like insulting people, and I didn't insult anyone. I asked a question, and then stated my opinion about a certain line of thinking I believe to be unhelpful. Not the same.
C) Please cite, with sources, proof of your speculation that Apple intentionally withholds features that it could easily and affordably include (e.g. optical image stabilization and AMOLED) not because of design limitations or the lack of availability within the supply chain of required technology in volumes large enough to satisfy their massive demand, but simply in order to make more profit.

I'm guessing you cannot and will not respond to "C", but I'd be pleasantly surprised if you did.
