Hands-free or eavesdropping-free so you can talk to your phone without nearby people listening in, they need to announce the thing already.

For personal assistant stuff, it seems like SIRI has the edge cause it speaks back to you contextually.

For searches and almost everything else, Google Now has the edge cause it's faster, more accurate, and can do dictation offline, and sometimes can be hands free all the way through. Some of the commands you can implement with Google Now are just shockingly impressive (e.g., the command "Search for cat pictures" and it'll populate all your pics with cats. You can get that specific.).

Google, as usual, just needs to make things consistent. Allow the time bar for ever single command. This conversation would be over, then.

I don't think that's his point. Can you send an email or text message without touching the screen? The answer has been provided, and it's no. So yeah in some functions you can be totally hands free and it's an advantage, but in others you have to touch the screen at a clear disadvantage.
I agree with you......somethings like navigation require you to touch the screen.
But when driving it is totally hands free. It will read incoming texts and emails and respond to those emails handsfree.

Did you watch the whole video? Did you hear him say it was touchless to send texts and emails? Did you? Since you want to keep this going.....try this
Without looking or touching your phone ask siri to search for "touchless controls on the Moto X". I'll wait while you do that......what was Siri's response? What no response? Ok try something simple. Without touching or looking at your phone ask siri what the weather is going to be today. Well.....what was the answer? See all those and more you can do with Google Now on the Moto X......

Why can you not acknowledge the point that you cannot send a message on the Moto X without touching the screen? I don't give a flying %&$% about checking the weather or searching the internet without having to touch the screen. However I do regularly send emails, schedule appointments, or send a message and even your beloved Moto X, you still have to touch the screen to send it, plain and simple.

Try this...put your Moto X in your pocket, activate voice controls to send a text message and send it to whomever without ever taking the phone out of your pocket. Try the same thing with an iPhone. Who's actually going to get their text message?

Seriously? did you not read anything? You can send and receive texts and emails...educate yourself.....I have proven you wrong turn by turn, then you change the scope of your discussion. Now the phone is in my pocket? Do the same with your iPhone and use Siri? Yeah how did that turn out? Lets make it easy......put your iPhone right in front of you....don't touch it and ask it to set a reminder? yeah...what was the result? Without touching it ask Siri to send an text. Did anyone get it? Like you....no one got it.....You can do those things with Google Now on the Moto X.

Yeah it's definitely useful, it's too bad about emails and text, but I can definitely see the use of it.

FYI, and others can chime in here, from what I understand most states handsfree laws have been augmented in recent years to include "any distraction", which technically can sometimes be used to argue even if you are touching your phone for GPS, or to return a call even if on a headset.

It's also interesting to note that a couple of studies recently came out saying that handsfree texting wasn't any safer than hands texting.

In all fairness he's not denying that you still need a touch screen input to send the text or email, he's said so a couple of times. It seems it's just a difference of how you use your phone and what's important to you. Maybe checking calendar and weather is more important to him so he bought an android phone, and sending text/email is more important to you so you bought an iphone.

I stand corrected if these functions can be completed while driving. This article was the first where I'd seen it spelled out as such.

My question though is why can't they have the same functionality when not in driving mode?

Oh so there is a driving mode where you CAN send text/email without the confirmation input on the touch screen? Someone should have just said this to begin with.

Now we're talking, that makes it much more useful. Having something handsfree is kind of useless IMO other than driving.

I was about to chime in b.c you guys were just going in circles. You can do everything hands free when driving :)

Yes, I didn't clarify my example fully last post--that example is typical for me when I use my phone with Bluetooth headphones. My mistake.

Regardless, I'm done arguing, we're not getting anywhere and not helping anyone with this back and forth. Yes, the Moto X offers truly touchless functionality for many things, not all. Yes, I personally prefer how Siri handled processing requests to send emails and texts because it didn't require that I ever touch the screen to compete it, especially beneficial over bluetooth. And yes, I hope all of the touchless functionality is included with the Nexus 5, and that they add to it by allowing all requests to be completed without the need to touch the screen--would make Google Now truly superior to Siri in all regards.

I was about to chime in b.c you guys were just going in circles. You can do everything hands free when driving :)

Hehe, poor jamezr. That driving mode is pretty awesome, I hope Google includes it in their version. I'll definitely recant and say that from an input point of view the MotoX is superior to Siri, but only that one phone out of all the other Android ecosystem.

Just as a way to ease back into the original topic, anyone care to venture why Motorola didn't build the N5? It just seems weird with them being in house and everything, especially in light of how awesome the MotoX software seems to be.

Agreed, on all counts ;), though I did like being able to keep my iPhone in my pack when outdoors and using BT headphones that allow me to activate Siri--miss that functionality when using my HTC One.

Include full touchless control on the upcoming Nexus and I'll be ecstatic.

While we are on the subject, can you activate Google Now by pressing the bluetooth headset button while on the Moto X? Hmm, methinks maybe I should have bought the MotoX instead of my G2.

All the latest clues/easter eggs point to October 28th.

I dig Google's approach. They've decided screw trying to keep a super tight lid on security cause leaks are bound to happen, and let's just have some fun. It's a nice way to keep things interesting, exciting, and to keeps fans on their toes.

Now, they just have to deliver...

Dang that just seems so long from now. Also even after the phone is announced we will still have to wait a couple of weeks before the release.

Yeah, I knew this, but I was so entertained by the circlej#%k that was occurring that I didn't want to interrupt or end it. :p

It's called Motorola Assist. And it's a beautiful thing. :D

Thanks for nothing KH ;), that's a few hours I'm not getting back. :p

I had the exact same question but, in the interest of peace and tranquility (and getting this thread back on topic ;)), I'm going to post it over in the Moto X thread.

Not really. The speculated date is that of the release of Kit Kat. It is connected to the release of the new Nexus phone which may be released on the same day or shortly thereafter.

You keep saying things that just aren't true. That article is not accurate. The person who wrote it misunderstood how it works. Google Now on the Moto X does not have special functionality while driving. Google Now is EXACTLY the same on EVERY Android device. The ONLY difference with the Moto X is you can initiate it without touching the screen. Again, that is the ONLY difference! I used the Moto X extensively before returning it and deciding to wait for the Nexus 5. Yes, Touchless Control on the Moto X is awesome and very useful, but it just won't do what you're saying it will do.

The Moto X does have a driving mode that will read an incoming text to you or announce a caller, and it will allow you send a built-in reply to someone while driving letting them know that you are currently driving. That part is completely hands free, and it is very useful. But you can NOT reply to a text message or send a new text message while driving without having to touch the screen to complete it! It works the same as it does when you're sitting still.

I love the Moto X. I also love Google Now and prefer it over Siri, but facts are facts, and the fact is that Google Now on the Moto X can't do anything that Google Now on every other Android phone can't do -- besides the initial activation of it by voice. It will not let you send a text or email without having to touch the screen to send it -- when driving or when sitting still.

Hey Lava Lamp Freak.....There are tons of reviews that show everything I have said the Moto X will do.....not going to discuss it anymore here.......
Thanks :)

google now is not what is performing the touchless controls we are talking about. IT IS MOTO ASSIST...THE APP BUILT INTO THE PHONE FOR DRIVING.

google now is not what is performing the touchless controls we are talking about. IT IS MOTO ASSIST...THE APP BUILT INTO THE PHONE FOR DRIVING.

Only Google Now sends texts or emails. The features of Moto Assist are:
Announces who is calling you out loud
Reads received text messages out loud
Resumes music playback
Answer calls hands-free
Prompts you for a text message quick reply for people who are calling or texting you
“I’m driving and will get back to your soon.-sent by Motorola Assist”

Like I said, I've used these features extensively and found them very helpful. It just won't send text or emails without having to tap that final "Send message" or "Send email" button.
