So I finally got to use a Nexus One for a long time as someone I know bought one and it turned out to be what I expected, impressive and attractive because it's so different BUT I still think android needs more time in the oven for me, maybe a year or two, and Google needs to release another phone.

But glad I got to try one without buying it :p I was always interested in the platform, just not the phones and fragmentation (in terms of updates). So one day in the future I'm definitely in.

Make sure its an AT&T version if you're going to be popping an at&t sim in it!

I'd like to tell everyone my experience switching to the ATT version of the N1 (which I still have). I'd like to preface this saying I'm not anti-Apple or an Apple fanboy. I have no irrational allegiance or hatred for the company. They're just a company and throughout my life I've constantly switched between devices to find the best one for me. I posted my experiences after a couple days in an N1 forum, here are some excerpts:

Since that post, many of these things have stayed the same. I still think the screen on the N1 blows the iPhone out of the water, but there are several things on the N1 that make me want to go back to iPhone, now. I'll summarize them:

-The iPhone scrolls far smoother. It stutters less and webpages are more easily manipulated before the page has fully loaded than on the N1.
-Spotlight murders any type of search google has on the N1. Spotlight is super fast and very efficient. Google search on the N1 is slow (letter by letter is embarassingly slow), it doesn't search through a whole lot of stuff (they do have web suggestions though as you type) such as calendar, etc.
-There is no way to search calendar.
-The calendar app is horrendous. It is literally the worst program I've ever seen, and I downloaded the "do not push the button" app for the iPhone.
-Even though everything syncs with google, I miss iTunes integration pretty badly. Apple has me snared in that regard.
-I added someone to contacts, but when I went to send them a text message later that day, their name didn't pop up when I started typing it in the recipient section.
-The keyboard is really bad. I've tried to get used to it, I've given it time. It is aggravating. It tries to autocorrect things for no reason, and is buggy. I could type 45-50 wpm on my iPhone but I am terrible on the N1. This ruins the device for me. Apple got the keyboard right.
-Things are slow! Programs don't open immediately, the phone kind of lags when programs are opening/downloading/installing. The animations aren't as smooth and fluid. It shouldn't be this way!
-Copy/Paste is terribly implemented. After all our complaining about Apple not including it, they at least got it right. It sucks on Android.

-The worst negative, though, has to be the touch screen. It isn't sensitive. It causes me to miss keystrokes typing, bad scrolling, inaccuracy for selecting links, etc. Your finger almost needs to be warm and soft for it to work. My fingertips are usually dry on account of the fact that I play basketball so much, and it just doesn't work for tapping the screen. I was using the calculator yesterday and you just can't count on it picking up the right number of presses.

Overall, the N1 is a good phone. It really has some great features but I'm buying the iPhone when the new one comes out this summer (with iPhone OS 4.0 of course)...the day it comes out. I'm excited to get back to integration with all my Apple stuff, and I'm excited to get back to a sensitive touchscreen with a great keyboard. Android has a lot of potential, but it's not there yet. It's strange; some parts of the OS seem so advanced while other parts are mind-bogglingly primitive.

I know, this was a super long post but I hope it informed at least someone. If anyone has any questions don't hesitate to ask them. I'll still have my N1 until the new iPhone comes out so I'll still be able to know what I'm talking about.

I'm wondering if you've upgraded to 2.2 and if so, has this changed any of your concerns with the Nexus One?

<rant>

I've always said great things about the Nexus One and the Android Platform. Despite the benefits of the iOS and the amazing iPhone4, I've stood behind the innovation behind Google and their products.

However . . . everything changed yesterday. All of a sudden my Gmail stopped syncing. The last email I received was at 8:31am, June 13th. I was also unable to download any new applications from the Marketplace.

Now I'd consider myself a tech savvy user so I went online and searched high and low for a solution. I stumbled upon these three threads.

And I found a number of other users with the exact same issue. Apparently it's a well known and recognized issue by Google.

To me it's a small hiccup and I'll get through it by using more of my iPad :apple:.

For the average user, having apps and email completely shut down is unacceptable. A number of people in those three threads have even contacted their OEM and gotten new phones. However, it seems as if the issue is not hardware based. It's google's fault. Switching gmail accounts fixes the issue. For many people, that's not an option.

The iOS has never let me down and for me, "it just works". Yes it's not as customizable as Android. Yes it's not Open like Android. Yes this and Yes that.

At the end of the day. Its not like its bad. There are tradeoffs to both platforms. However, you can always rely on iOS. Android has bad days and for some people, that makes all the difference.

This is why iOS > Android for the majority of the population at this point in time.

Hopefully this will change.

Everyone's iPad had a similar problem with Yahoo push mail just the other day.

And I'm having troubles on the iPad with GMail and Calendar sync at times. I have to add an entry and then suddenly everything syncs.

Sounds like a temporary goof up on the server sides.

And let's not forget how many problems MobileMe had at launch. And people were actually paying for that garbage.

Yep, and people still pay for that garbage. But if we're ranting about what your typical "real" user does, they use lots and lots of websites that incorporate Flash. Nexus one allows them to view it, iPad/iphone tells them to go to hell.

Yet, that doesn't stop them from buying Apple's mobile offerings.

My Nexus doesn't allow me to view that Flash. Although, I don't have a big reason to, I quite like my browser experience without flashing banner ads.

When you get FroYo, you can set the plugin to "on demand" which shows where flash applets are positioned and you can choose what to load by tapping on it. This is how I have it which means indirectly flash ads are blocked and I'm only hampered by flash when I need it.

Of course you don't even have to install flash at all as it is a seperate download on the market.

Best of all worlds IMO.

Clueless about how your phone works? Pssst you don't see the flash ads. You simply click on the flash content you want to see and it loads. In other words, you have choices.

Well, yesterday my wife rooted and installed 2.2 on the phone for ebay. It's been a good phone, but I'm taking her 3GS when she gets the iPhone 4.

Are you on 2.1 (stock rom) or 2.2. The reason why I asked is that many people who loaded the non-final version of 2.2 that's floating around the net have reported similar issues.

Question guys and gals- ok, maybe more than one:

I had a Nexus One for about two weeks. I really didn't have a good chance to enjoy it as it had some signal issues that distracted me from really playing with Android. It subsequently went back to Google and I got a refund.

I bought my wife a 3GS and went back to my 3G. I'm just not sold on Apple's OS. I miss my notifications and Google Maps. I also miss the live wallpapers.

Anyways, I have since bought a Macbook Pro and I'd like to get another Nexus One. Will it sync with the Macbook and be able to use the music that I have already? I plan on getting an iPhone 4 and selling it to subsidize the new N1's cost. Unless AT&T comes out with something grand in the next couple of weeks.

How well does the N1 sync with Apple computers?

My wife and I ordered Nexus One's back in March to replace our iphones (2G).

I ordered only one first to try out with her ATT sim card. Service was pretty good. Definitely Android not a polished OS. But when I got the second one, and we switched to T-mobile (this was a month-or-so before the ATT N1 was released) our service went all to Hell. We are in Austin TX and the service was mediocre at best. But in our hose we had very limited service and after two weeks it got worse.

My wife really didn't like the N1 so we switched back to ATT and got her a 3GS. I went back to my 2G which is having screen issues.

I liked the N1, but not on T-mobile and I did have a few really annoying issues with the N1:
1) The screen and capacitive touch buttons did not operate predictably.
2) The wifi would not consistently connect at the very least to our home network - I would have to keep reconnecting it manaully.
3) It made me think my Alpine bluetooth hands free system in my car was broken. The bluetooth would not connect consistently. Big headache. I had come to rely on it when we were still living in CA. (when I went back to using my iphone the bluetooth worked perfectly)
4) This phone is not designed to work with email other than GMail. Very annoying if your main email is mobileme (or .Mac).
5) It was tough to get alert sounds consistent across the phone, especially not using the gmail client.
6) Battery life was an issue.

I think tho, that if I had gotten the N1 on ATT to begin with, I would have kept the phone.

You will be about to sync contacts, email, etc. using google's sync. It works pretty well. I've been doing that since I've had a PC since my first iPhone 2G (I am on a Macbook Pro now).

You will not be able to play your DRM'd music on the N1. I'm not sure if the iTunes store music is DRM'd anymore or not. I was able to copy iTunes store podcasts to my N1.

I received mine a week ago. I'm loving it so far. I've been an iPhone user since it was first released and find using Android/Nexus One to be a refreshing change. Can't wait for the official release of 2.2.
