Baker Mayfield had 3 head coaches in 4 years. This is typical of the Browns since their return in 1999. When they aren't switching coaches, they're switching OCs. When they aren't switching OCs, they're switching QBs. With the exception of Tim Couch (who managed to last 4.5 years), they've just can't give any QB a shot to actually grow in the roll under a single coach. Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn, Colt McCoy, Brandon Weedon, Johnny Manziel, DeShone Kizer, Tyrod Taylor, the list goes on.
Baker Mayfield was probably the best of the bunch since 1999, and actually ranks near the top of the list for winning percentage all-time for Cleveland. Was he elite? No. But he had real potential and when I look at the coaching and the team around him, he wasn't really set up to win until last year and by then it was obvious the Browns already had made up their mind to start looking around for another QB.
I'm not saying all their QBs were great, but I think some of those on the recent list could have grown into pretty decent players had they the luxury of good, consistent coaching, a decent O line and a running back who could make it out of the backfield.
Teams give up too quickly on QBs and coaches. Some don't deserve the gift of time, but many do.
