Where does Baker Mayfield land? New Orleans? Texas? Seattle? Indianapolis?
I can't keep track of which teams have found replacements for departed QBs.

Probably not Texas, they have Davis Mills, who was maybe second best rookie QB in 2021 after Mac Jones.

I've found a team to root for next season. They ain't the Breveland Clowns anymore. They've got a good defense, a pair of outstanding RBs and now an elite QB.
I've watched Watson dazzle for 3 1/2 years. The man can ball now matter who the play caller, even if it's not a good fit for his skillset. He a young version of Russel Wilson.
3 first round picks plus change is a great bargain for Cleveland, considering how many whiffs they have had with 1st round QB picks: Johnny Football, Brandon Weeden, Brady Quinn, Tim Couch. Mayfield ain't a whiff, but he ain't a slam dunk either.

The Browns seem to have a lot of ‘off-the field’ drama issues. You would think after having a season that they just had, they would have more consistency in terms of being able to have player retention, but the quarterback situation that they’re in now, can put them in a position back where they’re the Browns that no one remembered.

Garappolo still hasn't been traded yet?

Maybe he'll end up with the 49ers again for the 2022?

Baker Mayfield had 3 head coaches in 4 years. This is typical of the Browns since their return in 1999. When they aren't switching coaches, they're switching OCs. When they aren't switching OCs, they're switching QBs. With the exception of Tim Couch (who managed to last 4.5 years), they've just can't give any QB a shot to actually grow in the roll under a single coach. Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn, Colt McCoy, Brandon Weedon, Johnny Manziel, DeShone Kizer, Tyrod Taylor, the list goes on.

Baker Mayfield was probably the best of the bunch since 1999, and actually ranks near the top of the list for winning percentage all-time for Cleveland. Was he elite? No. But he had real potential and when I look at the coaching and the team around him, he wasn't really set up to win until last year and by then it was obvious the Browns already had made up their mind to start looking around for another QB.

I'm not saying all their QBs were great, but I think some of those on the recent list could have grown into pretty decent players had they the luxury of good, consistent coaching, a decent O line and a running back who could make it out of the backfield.

Teams give up too quickly on QBs and coaches. Some don't deserve the gift of time, but many do.

Agreed. I think Baker will do well on a different team.

I follow Miami and the fan base as far as I can tell is crazy over this, but I don't like it. I feel safe posting here because I'm unlikely to get attacked. My reasoning is they could have drafted a very good WR in the first round, and a middle LB in the second round, which they really need. But they undoubtedly now have the fastest & shiftiest pair of WR in the NFL, for what that's worth.

I know, right? I don’t know where he’ll end up, but there’s been rumors all over the place. Last I heard, the Buffalo Bills were considering him, but that’s probably even changed already. Really strange that he hasn’t even been signed yet, since it’s been three months since they’ve been out of the playoffs.

I truly like the guy, and he has loads of potential, and I hope he finds a good home.

I don't know if he want to go to Buffalo, given who their QB is right now. I could see a team like Cleveland... oh wait. Maybe someone like Seattle going after him.

I've read some commentary that suggests uncertainty about Garappolo's recovery time (and success) from his upcoming shoulder surgery might have been a factor in teams passing on him.

Buffalo just signed Case Keenum so they would seem to be already set with a starting quarterback and an experienced backup.

I read that the 49ers are reluctant to trade him to division rival Seattle.......so what's left? Carolina maybe?

That’s a really good point about the shoulder issue, maybe with the timing of that. Just with the NFL draft coming up here quickly, I figured he would been traded by now.

And with Russell Wilson traded, I do agree that Seattle could possibly be a contender.

I thought he would have been traded pretty quickly, certainly before somebody like Carson Wentz.

But it may be that the recent injury has reinforced his rep as an injury prone player, certainly something that's highly undesirable for a team's starting quarterback.

The unexpected surgery only added to the other factors that have limited his appeal, like his cap figure.

Of course, any trade would likely involve a new/reworked contract to make him more palatable to the new team, but it's still something that would need to be resolved, and when everything is added up, the package might not look so good to a lot of teams. And, nobody knows, or is saying, what the 49ers are asking for in return.

For them, his biggest liability is the cap figure, when they've got to sign their big playmakers to new deals. Otherwise, a change in plan that would keep him on the team, and have the rookie Lance on the bench for another year could be dealt with (ask Jordan Love…), and as a player, Garappolo is well-liked in the locker room, so no issue there. Given his injury history, Lance would probably see playing time anyway.

Would SF be willing to trade him to a division rival in Seattle? The latter look to be in a rebuilding/fresh start mode anyway, so they may not be interested. The QB class in this draft isn't highly rated, but who knows? The two guys commonly considered in the GOAT discussion, Montana and Brady, were drafted in the third and sixth rounds, respectively, and neither were originally "the" highly recruited guys on their college teams.

The last option is a release, which a brief search shows his dead money figure is still substantially less than his cap figure would be. But $9M is still a lot to eat, when it could be put to better use if they're able to complete any sort of trade.

It's been an eventful offseason, and a lot of changes will come next season. Some are already anointing the AFC West the toughest division, but I'd wait to see it play out on the field first.

The unexpected surgery
It wasn’t unexpected.

Actually, the complete opposite. He injured a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder in the Wild Card matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. It was speculated through the playoffs he would need to have this addressed. His injured thumb was the main talk, being that it was affecting his throwing hand, that was determined to have a post-seen Op to repair.

So it sounds like he will be out a total of 16 weeks, and pushes him into mid summer, which he can still make July training camps and then probably be ready to go by the regular season if his rehab goes accordingly. I don’t think it makes him any less desirable, but I do think it’s not the most optimal scenario.

The thumb was the main talk; the shoulder didn't become news until later, even in a sort of "oh, yeah" fashion.

It was reported Tuesday that Garoppolo will undergo surgery on his right shoulder imminently. The initial expectation was that he’d need surgery on his right thumb, not his shoulder.

The decision was unexpected to Lynch, too. He said Wednesday he found out this week
and tried to calm the tides and convince folks that Garoppolo would be just fine. He even made a halfhearted attempt to express the sentiment that Garoppolo is still “a part of us” despite the reality that he will not return next season.

Lynch indicated that Garoppolo tried rehabbing the shoulder but the results were not satisfactory.

“We didn’t know it and I don’t think Jimmy knew it. He’s made a decision here in the last couple of days,”
Lynch said. “The shoulder — I never like saying minor when someone’s having surgery — it’s a capsule issue in the back of his shoulder that you can try to rehab, but if it doesn’t get well with the rehab, then you go with the alternative route and that’s what they’ve decided to do. So it’s going to take some time but he’s going to be fine.”

Plan A for the shoulder was rehab. Plan B was surgery. The thumb that was the big talk…nope, the opposite of what was expected. Garopollo's last ankle injury was healed through rehab, not surgery, so that's his preferred route.

All well within the parameters of what most would consider unexpected.

Unless you wish to consider a report from the team's flagship station unfounded, and the team's GM a liar. Lynch has been retired for a while, but I bet he can still hit pretty hard.

Putting all that aside, what kind of idiot would Garopollo and his agent be to delay surgery, if that was expected all along?

Why not do it ASAP, rather than wait a month to have it done, torch his value in the trade market, and leave minimal time for him to get acquainted with a new team?
