Hmm. When I ran I'm sure it had pace, time and distance. Are you indoors testing this? Maybe you won't see distance until you are outside with a GPS signal and running.

Not tried it outside yet, but you're probably right. Excuse my ignorance, all.

I just did this and it added a duplicate workout in the Health app.

Edit: I went into Health app and deleted the duplicate entry. This is a good work around for me as I get to maintain my history in Nike+

Yep, I might do this too. Use Activity and manually add to Nike. You might not need to delete the duplicates. I think there is a setting in the Health app sources that would let you deny Nike Running from adding things to Health.

EDIT: Yep! Health > Sources > Nike Running > Switch off workouts.

just say no to any nike apps. the nike+ app was really buggy.

fitbit, on the other hand, works very well.

I'm on the fence between using the native fitness app and Nike+ for the Watch.

One feature I haven't figured out yet in the Nike+ is how to end/pause a run using the watch. Can anyone please help me? Thanks...

Well. Run didn't go so well with the Nike app. You still have to run with your phone even on a treadmill. It simply doesn't work if not paired to the phone, which is really disappointing. Also, I noticed some 3rd party apps like Nike are very slow to load and took 10 seconds to update running distances showing on the phone itself. So I was actually still running with the phone AND having to look at the phone for correct stats. Really bummed. May be a deal breaker for me. I'll try the apple workout app this weekend and see if it works better. I have 1800 plus miles logged into the Nike app. Really want to keep using it. :(

Yeah, that's already in metric. I can get kms absolutely fine - and have been doing that since using it for the past few months - but I can't get it for the watch app.

I'm not an 'everything sucks' kinda guy.......I guess I just imagined using my apple watch would be a little bit more simpler than it's turning out to be.

Apologies. Assumed km on phone = km on watch. Odd...
My "everything sucks" was an unfair paraphrase. It does sound like users' expectations heading in vs. actual experience is frustrating some. I'm simply looking for a more integrated Nike FuelBand. So I should be pleased. My wife is absolutely loving her 38mm white sport.

Best.

I'm very disappointed that the Nike+ app doesn't work on the watch without the phone, at least not yet. I don't care about GPS so I use my Nano to track my runs. I have no desire to carry around my iPhone while running. I only have about 1700 miles to go until I hit the top level on Nike+, so after that I'll switch to a different app on the watch full time if Nike+ isn't available.

Can you just use the Watch by itself for the run without the iPhone, then when you get home, let the Watch update the Health App on the iPhone, then let Nike app update itself using the Health app data?

Is Apple forbidding 3rd party apple watch apps from working without an iPhone? I'd even use the apple workout app if it would sync with Nike on the back end (or vice versa) so I can keep my run history I've built up on Nike for the past 4 years. I really like the Nike iPhone app but this could cause me to return or sell the apple watch. Using the watch for running without my phone was one of the main reasons I bought the watch.

Nike foot pod is only supported on 5S and below devices. The module is no longer available on the 6 and 6+.

I've always ran with my phone with the Nike+ app though but it's annoying since I have a 6+. I need to find a better running belt.

That's a good question. I'm not sure if Apple allows 3rd party apps on the watch to operate without the iPhone. I was under the impression from the pre-release reviews that Nike+ would work without the phone, but evidently that was incorrect. I still would have bought the watch either way. The built in running app works great, though it's hard to pause workouts. If that data would transfer to Nike+ I would just use that. I'm not a die hard tracker of my running, but I would like to reach the highest Nike+ level before I stop using their app.

I'll give it a little time. After all, the watch has only been out for a week. I think it's fun to have, even with all the early challenges.

Currently all 3rd party apps have to load from the iPhone. I think that was covered in the Verge review of the watch.

I think the on board Workout app for running sucks. I just tried it then added the data to the Nike + Running app.

I hate that there's no map.

Why can't the apple watch just sense what I'm doing and add it? Or how come Nike writing data to the Health app doesn't update the activity app?

I guess I won't be getting rid of my Nike+ GPS running watch with foot pod any time soon. Most of my runs are on treadmill and the 'carry your phone with you' bit isn't going to cut it.

Amen and amen. This seems to be a pretty easy fix right. Come on apple and Nike. Get your ----together on this.

When I've been running with the Nike+ app alone (because the Workout app, as you say, sucks - it is so far totally inaccurate and the "pace metric" is laughably unusable) the activity app is still giving me credit in the exercise ruling without the Workout app running. Is it not doing that for you? My understanding is that the exercise ring is dependent on your HR so that should still work when a third party running app is on (as it has done for me).

I'm actually pretty impressed with the Nike+ watch app as a first effort, given that they can't yet install a native watch app or access the HR monitor...

I tried it once when I got it and didn't get any of the exercise ring but I'll give it another shot tomorrow. Maybe I was just taking an easy jog when I tried it, I don't remember exactly.

That would be fine with me, as when I tried the Nike watch app it seems just like the phone app, except the music kept stopping but the map, pace, etc. was pretty cool to have right on my wrist.

Yeh the current gen of apps aren't really "apps" they are like projections of screens from the apps on the iPhone. I think the rumor is a native app watch SDK would be coming later this year. Cant be too disappointed I mean its literally a 1.0 product. Just may have to wait a bit longer but i have to assume its coming soon.

Just my two cents on the watch "accuracy". It makes sense to me that you have to calibrate the accelerometer on the Watch before it can give you reliable info. If you think about the two motion-based frameworks from apple, CoreMotion and CoreLocation, when used in conjunction with each other they should be able to provide you with incredibly accurate results. CoreLocation, which lets call GPS-based (even though also using wifi and cell), is measuring the distance between two mapping points of long/lat. Each recording in the phone gets the location and a timestamp. So obviously you can track distance covered and pace from these two data points. CoreMotion is using the accelerometer and gyroscope to assess your movements and translate that into steps. How much distance you cover with each step (stride) can be learned by the accelerometer if it can compare the data it collects and calcs for your distance against the GPS data. But inherently, the AW measure of pace will be based on total steps, total time, and whatever calc its doing to determine your stride. I don think its using actual location info but instead using the GPS data (assuming you have chosen a Workout that is outdoors) to collaborate and refine the motion data.

Maybe its just me but i would think, given how I might walk / run a bit differently form time to time (in terms of where my wrist might be, how i swing my arm), I could see the AW needing 5-10 of these before it might be accurate or much closer to a GPS calc.

The only problem I've been having with the Nike+ app is the music too - it cut out every time I got a "pause" or "restart" announcement. I went into the settings menu in the app and switched off "pause music when run is paused" (having already switched other announcements off). Will report back if this cures it.

Two runs so far. Workout app running on watch and Nike+/Zombies Run app on iPhone 6+.

Not a huge difference, considering all apps couldn't be started at the same time. I'll continue using this combo for further data but the biggest difference is calories on Nike+ and Workout. Nike+ might be using the elevation for further calorie counting. Between the three apps, there was only a .05 difference in distance. Pace is almost on par but remember, I had to stop each app individually with Zombies Run being the last app I stopped. My first full day with the watch today and I filled all the rings in the Activity app :) My watch has been on since 5:30 ish AM and is currently at 44% battery at 12:19AM. 19 hours of usage so far but i'll charge it overnight since I plan on running again tomorrow

Today I told the Nike app not to do any music and just switched over to iTunes and started a playlist.

Today this worked fine for me, I don't know if the watch is getting used to my resting HR or what but I started my run using only the Nike + Running app and at some point during the run the Activity app starting pinging me with updates.

Manual Entry

Hope this wasn't asked and answered:

To do a manual entry, use the iPhone Nike+ App, tap the menu icon on upper left, tap activity, tap + in the upper right. Enter data. Go back to home page and pull down screen to sync with OS X version.

My story:
Have used Nike+ for almost 10 years. Hated the $20 battery surcharge, but was too lazy to set up a workshop to replace them myself, so I'm glad that's gone.
I'd hate to lose the continuity of all that cumulative data, so the manual update is the solution as of today, and until it becomes not worth the effort.
Ran today with just the Apple Watch and Dacom bluetooth head set. Better without the earphone cord, much better without the iPhone on my arm, and even better than with the 6th gen Nano (plus battery transmitter, etc.) in my pocket and earphone cord.
Accuracy agrees with recent iPhone runs, but of course I never calibrated Nike+ so I am much slower than I thought, but I don't care. Do a 5K about once a year just to see what I can really do. ;)

thanks for this topic.....So, do we have a definitive answer yet on this? I also use nike+ and map my run. Do they both display on the watch, like the phone? I use nike+ for the coach stuff as well. The map is not as important to show up on the watch, but does the same info show on the watch with like your time and distance and all that jazz...thanks!

Does the nike app give the pace on the watch? I don't mind running with my phone. I want to get a watch and I can keep my phone in a flip belt. And I know some of my shorter runs so I won't even need the phone I can input my times/distances into nike.

I've seen other discussions about other apps. Some work well, others struggle. I don't understand why the nike app on the watch doesn't just get its info from the phone if you are running with the phone. Or does it?

The watch does just get the info from the phone I think, and you can see pace, distance and duration as you run.

Does anyone have issues with the Nike app not playing the playlist you have chosen?

Sometimes it seems that it just starts playing random music from my iPhone and then the voice that comes through saying your mileage/pace/etc. stops completely. The run still is tracked and the watch updates, but I'm not getting the correct music.

Also does anyone know the proper way to start a run? If I press the big red button and sometimes it starts, and sometimes it doesn't. If I press start in the top left of the watch it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

I've gone on about 4 or 5 runs with the watch app and still haven't figured it out yet.
