The problem is that there are still enough iPhone x stock around . In Europe they are going for 50 euro’ s more than the XR, and they have Dual camera’s and na OLED , and they look exactly the same as the xs.
And general consumers don’ t know that much about smart hdr or the a12 vs the a11. It looks the same as the xs, and better than the xr, so that is what they want.

Perhaps apple should have kept the x in their line-up for about $849 and the xr for $699 instead of $749, stop iPhone 8 and 8 plus, and keep the 7 and 7 plus around for the budget minded.

None of their competitors share unit sales. Unit sales can’t grow forever and don’t tell the whole story. The only mistake Apple is making here is that they should have stopped sharing unit sales years ago.
yup they should of stopped after the 6 launch which was the biggest selling. Ending on a high note would of been fine. Doing it now raises eyebrows.

That would of made it worse for them honestly

I feel XR is too expensive. In Europe is nearly 1100 USD. That is just too much for that phone. I don't expect sales to be too high. If someone wants to splash that amount of money on new iPhone they will go XS and not XR.

how much is the xs and max in Europe then?

Depends on the country. But in Poland and Norway it starts from 1500 USD roughly...(for XS). I know its VAT etc but somehow other companies can think about that and do direct USD to EUR conversion with VAT included (Sony , Samsung etc). So Apple could really chill on the lets convert USD to EUR and slap VAT on top.

This quote here is precisely what gets Apple into trouble, just as back in the Sculley days of product confusion.

Apple should simply release a single brand new iPhone each year (yet still in both regular and Plus sizes), price them reasonably, and simply leave all previous iPhone models to each of the used and the refurbished markets. Simple. Period.

The problem I’m having with Apple these days when it comes to their phones and their iPads and even their computers is that there’s too many models that overlap in price/performance/value. In the case of the iPhone, there’s the XS, XS Max, XR, 8, 8 Plus, 7, 7 Plus. Looking to replace a 6, but when I spend time trying to figure out what’s the best model to get where I feel like I’m not stuck with old tech but also not getting ripped off in the I pay for it, I get weary and think Well, my 6 is still doing fine enough. I’ll look at this later. I’ve had the exact same problem with trying to select a new iPad and a replacement laptop.

There’s a balance between too many products and too few and Apple is clearly on the Too many side.

Reminds me of the days of Sculley and Spindler. I was there back then and it was the same damned game.

Also, I don’t believe the massive price increases (nothing gradual about it when the Mac Mini shoots up more than 50%) is all due to the device itself. You have to remember that Apple’s going to use the devices that make money to pay for the things that do not, like the Homepod, Apple Car, Apple exclusive TV programming, and the twenty other projects they seem to have wandered off to take on. All of those people in all those other projects have to be paid as well, and have health insurance (because the U.S. still ties health insurance to where you work for some damned reason) and the support staff and the people who empty the trash cans or serve in the cafeteria.

Anyone who was around for those grand days back when knows this will not end well until there’s a dramatic change in the culture.

Maybe they can use their amazing technology to bring Steve back again, as a hologram. It just needs to shout at folks to get their asses in gear and stand on stage and show more real emotion than the humans they have now. They have that emoji face thing.

iPhone SE refresh > phenomenal success
iPhone 8 > failed design without innovation

iPhone X > failed design, horrific costs, still semi-successful

iPhone XR > failed design, wrong niche phablet market, horrific price

Apple did it all wrong. Tim Cook did it all wrong. Jony Ive did it all wrong.

Jobs early recipe for developing the iPhone was slight enlargement of the display with each version and improving overall design. Cook and Ive did improve nothing. they blatantly blew up the screen size in hope for more cash from the App store. There are people, who want giant phablets, there are even ones, who would love using an iPad pro to make calls.

But the vaaaaaast majority, especially men who don't carry men purses, want a SMALL phone in their front pockets. Easy as that. And screw Your App Store sales, Tim. I am not buying anything until You give me that small phone.

This would have never happened if Apple would not have changed from "Apple Computers Inc" to "Apple soldered computer parts Inc"...

Steve Jobs driving force was not greed but user experience and the sheer beauty of a product.

Steve would have never allowed this.

It´s no real surprise though that initial sales of the XR are generally lower then the Xs. The Xr is positioned at another market of cheaper phones, aka people who buy them are not as tech savvy as the ones who buy the Xs. In essence the Xr is not a phone people buy at launch rather then strong sales throughout its lifecycle.

Actually it is not positioned at another market at all. The flagship Huawei P20Pro with 128 GB storage can be had for 650€ in Germany while the XR starts at 849€. The Samsung Note 9 starts retailing at 800€. Apple better wake up. The company prices itself out of the market.

Yes. Fully agree. Their lineup is out of control. Get rid of all of the phones except XS, HR and something replacing SE ffs.

I love this news, sometimes Apple needs to be kicked in the nuts by low sales on one of their product.

This thing is still expensive as hell. The XR should have A11 and go for a lower price such as $499.

Personally I think the XR is pretty good value for $749. Most of the features of the XS line at a much better price point. But the problem is I think it’s hard for a lot of people to get excited for the “cheaper option.” Shelling out $749+ for the base model iPhone without the perceived prestige of the premium XS line probably turns people off. Perhaps just reverting back to only one line of flagship phones at a slightly lower price next year might work better? Like $799/899 for small/large phones?

Apple is really competing against older models of iPhone that people are still using. I'm still using my iPhone 7, and it'll be perfectly fine for a few more years. I use my phone less and less as time goes on. My wife just picked up a new iPhone 7 instead of replacing her iPhone 6+ with an Xs/Xr/8.

At some point improvements in technology just don't matter anymore. Awesome screen? Sure, but my 7's screen is just fine. If I want high-res I'll use my iPad Pro or throw the pics onto my TV.

For the younger generation it's an all-in-one device, and Apple's getting the high-end of that. But at some point it'll be enough, until another quantum leap comes along.

Make an iPhone XR mini and iPhone XS mini. Profit.

I would be more likely to get an XR Plus than a mini. I'd rather keep my 6+ than pay 750$ to get a screen that isn't as wide. I would like a device that has more RAM, though.

The taller screen is not important to me at all. The notch does not bother me at all. Losing the headphone jack bothers me a little, but I've been trying to get used to bluetooth headphones. I hate bluetooth headphones because most seem to include a power button that annoying doubles as a redial-the-person-you-last-called button. I never want to initiate a phone call from my headphones.

Nikkei put out the same crap last year about the X, just like they’ve done in previous years, and they were wrong as usual. Why anyone would pay any attention to them is beyond me. Typical stock manipulation tactics aimed at unsophisticated investors.

Speak for yourself. Sales of flagship phones don't bear this nonsense out and even budget phones are getting larger as production costs fall.

Four of those iPhones models don't even exist!

In addition, Apple's $89 to $93 billion revenue forecast for the first fiscal quarter of 2019 was cautious in its earnings call, but Apple blamed this on foreign exchange costs, issues with supply/demand balance, and weakness in emerging markets.

Apple will never compete in emerging markets until it becomes price competitive.

I'd rather see Apple get "kicked in the nuts" over bad XS/XSMax sales (for being too expensive) than low XR sales (which is the cheaper phone).

All that may have happened now is to have emboldened Apple by great XS/XSMax (expensive) sales.

Speaking only for myself, I still believe Apple has a great product of above average quality. My issue is the size of their iPhones. They’re too big and they no longer offer a “pocketable” option. I’d love to see the pockets on the Smartphone designers jeans. They must be enormous because I can’t sit comfortably with a current model iPhone in mine.
If they want to boost sales they might consider not alienating a customer base that lives the SE and iPhone 7. Food for thought.

All manufacturers chase money. If the demand is truly there, they will make your dream phone. Otherwise, time to search for an alternative.

Yep. I must admit, I don’t hate this news. I gave one of the new phones a shot, but it’s just too big for my pockets, so I returned it. I’m holding out until either the SE no longer works or Apple makes another small model.

I upgraded every other year starting with the 3G, but now I’m in a holding pattern.
