STEVE JOBS ERA

iPhone > phenomenal success
iPhone 3G > phenomenal success
iPhone 4 > phenomenal success
iPhone 5 > phenomenal success

BOZO ERA

iPhone 6 > failed design, still semi-successful
iPhone 6s > failed design, for phablet niche market still semi-successful
iPhone SE > phenomenal success
iPhone 7 > failed design without innovation
iPhone 7s > failed design without innovation
iPhone SE refresh > phenomenal success
iPhone 8 > failed design without innovation
iPhone 8s > failed design without innovation
iPhone X > failed design, horrific costs, still semi-successful
iPhone X plus > failed design, horrific costs, for phablet niche market still semi-successful
iPhone Xs > failed design without innovation
iPhone Xs max > failed design without innovation

iPhone XR > failed design, wrong niche phablet market, horrific price

Apple did it all wrong. Tim Cook did it all wrong. Jony Ive did it all wrong.

Jobs early recipe for developing the iPhone was slight enlargement of the display with each version and improving overall design. Cook and Ive did improve nothing. they blatantly blew up the screen size in hope for more cash from the App store. There are people, who want giant phablets, there are even ones, who would love using an iPad pro to make calls.

But the vaaaaaast majority, especially men who don't carry men purses, want a SMALL phone in their front pockets. Easy as that. And screw Your App Store sales, Tim. I am not buying anything until You give me that small phone.

This would have never happened if Apple would not have changed from "Apple Computers Inc" to "Apple soldered computer parts Inc"...

Steve Jobs driving force was not greed but user experience and the sheer beauty of a product.

Steve would have never allowed this.
This is a complete joke. Steve is gone kiddo. Move on negative Nancy.

It's too big for my taste, and 128GB in for $800 in 2018 is just too much for me. Hope they make an XR no bigger than the size of the Xs and starting at no more than $650 next year. My 7 is going strong.

iPhone market is now very different and has matured.

No more clamour and panic to have each new release

Fan bois and high rollers will take the XS and Max. The xr will of course still sell, but over time

When someone’s upgrade time comes or their current phone breaks or they want to change- they will see what’s available in store

When told , hey the XR has a nice big screen, Face ID etc and you save 300 bucks over the xs- yes that’s an attractive proposition.

All part and parcel of apple therefore showing an increased determination to milk its more affluent buyers

Don't you feel Apple not reporting iPhone numbers is a slap in the face for developers? Surely they want to know the potential market size for their application.
But they don’t get that from Android or any other phone maker. The reporting on units only help the competition who stopped reporting years ago even though these analysts boosted their numbers while down playing Apple’s. I’m glad they stopped reporting. One less tool to be used against them.

This quote here is precisely what gets Apple into trouble, just as back in the Sculley days of product confusion.

Apple should simply release a single brand new iPhone each year (yet still in both regular and Plus sizes), price them reasonably, and simply leave all previous iPhone models to each of the used and the refurbished markets. Simple. Period.

That’s an old world mindset. The market is 100 times bigger than it was 10 years ago. And that market is made out of plenty different buyers who want different things

Do u think bmw will ever go back to just making a 3 , 5 and 7 series car nowadays?

Have a look how many models and variants are on the market with still more to come
1 series, 2, 4, 6, x plus coupe plus suv plus gran tourers......

Maybe people are beginning to tire of carrying around a mini iPad. This is supposed to be a phone, after all. Even the 8 is too big, IMO, but Apple is no longer giving us a choice of smaller devices.

Surprise, actually no! Low resolution display and thick bezels is for many a no go !

there is nothing inherently wrong with apple's decision. of course, we know it's because the numbers wont be going up, but everyone already knows that, and many has been saying that for ages. in fact, companies like samsung does not report sale volume figures too, so no big deal. what is more crucial is where would future growth be from then? until the next breakthrough like self driving car, likely services, but will that be as successful as the iphone?

Not surprised. It might be just too big for people. I tried it in Apple Store and it felt massive for my small hands.

Besides, everybody who wants an iPhone already has one and there is a big bunch of them to choose from (sizes, prices, etc.). FaceID (hey notch!) and animojis may not be enough to convince people to pay significantly more for a device running the same iOS 12 as all the other iPhones from 5S onwards.

Went from the iPhone 7 to the X (and yes its too big imo, miss my 7 already), dont see why I would spend 200€ more for the Xs.
The Xr feels and looks cheap, for that kind of my Id rather keep my 7 or wait another year.
Having just gone from the 7 to the XR, I couldn't disagree more. Nothing about the XR looks or feels cheap. It does, however, cost more money than some can afford. My daughter broke her 6s over the weekend and opted for a new iPhone 8. I'm guessing a lot of people are taking advantage of the 7's and 8's that are still in Apple's line-up.

I really don't get the "looks and felt cheap" statements about the XR in this thread. It's using glass and aluminum that the the 6/7 lineup used for years. It has the one of the best LCD screens you can get and with the least amount of bezel of any LCD. Not to mention, it has the same processor and main camera as the XS, so I don't see how it could feel 'slow' cheap or 'this camera is eh' cheap. I swear, some people just make snap judgments and talk out of their arse here just because they can.

With Apple no longer reporting iPhone sales numbers, it’s a free-for-all when it comes to Apple rumours now.
Oh, poor Apple. It's terrible they were forced to stop reporting sales numbers.

Oh wait, they chose to stop reporting sales numbers. If they want it to be known exactly how many sold there is a very easy solution to that problem, isn't there?

Actually it is not positioned at another market at all. The flagship Huawei P20Pro with 128 GB storage can be had for 650€ in Germany while the XR starts at 849€. The Samsung Note 9 starts retailing at 800€. Apple better wake up. The company prices itself out of the market.

That might be true, however, in an apple dominated market the Xr is not a premium phone but rather sits at a "high end" midrange. That might not be true pricewise compared to android competitors, but in Apples world it is. I agree however that apple tech is generally overpriced compared to it´s competition, but I guess they can do that since people still buy their gear.

I’m not sure if I’m surprised by this or not.

On paper, the XR should be a runaway success as there is little to justify the £200+ markup for the XS over the XR.

That said, the only thing putting me off is the size. It’s an odd size to hold and doesn’t feel as comfortable in the hand as the XS or even the bigger XS Max. But then some of that I suspect is also physiological as you naturally associate bigger with more expensive.

I’m still torn which iPhone to upgrade to. None really deliver what I need (or want) this cycle.

Actually, this is the traditional way of thinking. That's is precisely what Steve Jobs fixed when he returned to Apple.

Apple can see the numbers, and the numbers say that people are keeping their phones longer. Plus the younger generation are using phones as their primary device. Desktop sales have tanked, and tablets are too specialized, too expensive, and hard to keep synchronized for most.

If there was some way to paint a screen onto someone's retina without a phone, people would buy it instead of a phone. Such a thing doesn't exist...but maybe a pair of VR goggles that are used as a HUD would work.

But Apple has decided to open up the price gap even further by increasing prices on all its products. We will see for how long people will keep buying Apple products. I know I won‘t be buying anything else, but I sure as h... will use every piece of Apple gear until it is truly unusable. No upgrade for a couple of new features at these prices.

I was in Best Buy and checked out the Xr, it felt cheap, next to my wife's v35 the screen stinks and that camera bump what is up with that. Imvho, maybe of ot was 450-500 but 750 good luck with that.

Those who could wait an additional month for the XR can wait a little longer to purchase it in store for below Apple list price. I, too, did not pre-order. Mostly because I want the Hong Kong Dual nano SIM versions.
None really deliver what I need (or want) this cycle.
What do you want if I might ask? I almost solely upgrade for the Dual-SIM and nice color. Technically, there is no reason to upgrade (at least not one to justify a few 100 bucks in upgrade cost). I'm pretty sure I'll keep the XR for the next 3 years+ unless Apple comes up with a new must have feature. I strongly doubt that.

The very fact that they stopped reporting numbers should tell us that, they are no longer that good.

No publicly traded company hides news that would spike their shares

When have you ever seen positive news about apple iPhone sales numbers?

This is the THIRD time in three years that Nikkei has released fake news about Apple iPhone supply chain!

It's a bit funny. Bet against Nikkei and get a free Lamborghini!

Right now, it doesn't matter what Apple reports or stops reporting. Right now, the market narrative has turned sour on AAPL and every story/"report" coming out is designed to drive the stock price down. No one outside of Apple really knows what's going on with sales and growth. And Apple isn't going to tell anyone until it's time.

If you're long AAPL, my suggestions is to ride it out. Maybe gather some money together and buy more when it bottoms. Or, if you want to risk missing the bottom, sell now to lock in some gains (hopefully your buy-in isn't at $230), and re-buy later on. I'm thinking mid-190's, but it could drop into the high 180's (just a guess at this point).

If your shorting the stock, then you've done well over the last week or so. Don't get too greedy and wait too long to cover.

At some point, the big guys will want to get back into AAPL and the the narrative will change. The "reports" will come out and say that Apple is ramping up production or the next supercycle is coming or something that will drive the stock the other way. Get in (or cover) before that happens.

But Apple has decided to open up the price gap even further by increasing prices on all its products. We will see for how long people will keep buying Apple products. That may be so in your case. But I do see a lot of you guys using iPhone 6 models and wanting to upgrade. I have been to a few apple stores and they are packed with people. I don't see the point of going to an Apple store - I just go there to see if it is busy, and it always is. I always buy online actually. But when the store is buzzing with people, you just know that Apple business is brisk! Selling like hotcakes as they say :) Worth upgrading just to get the latest cameras!
