What is disturbing is that he exhibits an all too common trend in American society where if a criticism is leveled, it's okay to be non-white and turn around and make comments that are essentially bigoted like "old white man" etc. as some form of standing justification for deflecting criticism. It's nothing short of hate speech that should not be tolerated if we want a truly equal society in the U.S.

Sadly, I rather enjoyed his review and his take on things, but lost me as a follower with that racist inflection.

Race, age, weight, religion, gender, nationality, any of that stuff is off limits in terms of criticism in 2015. He is called on that, and rightly so. His problem is that there are LOTS of other bright people out there who can put out an objective and amusing critique of the Apple Watch and it looks like Nilay doesn't know that. He should watch out, he might be replaced by a fat old white lesbian from Peru who does a great job!

Looks like Pad & Quill may have finally come out with the perfect watch band for Nilay Patel's Apple Watch!

I really find those cuff bands absolutely hideous. I recognize it's to each his own, but good grief they're so gross to me!

Not to derail the thread, but you are not alone. I can see a female getting away with it (similar to the double bands that wrap around).

No, no dog collar studs. Not quite Nilay, but getting closer.

Amen. Unless you are way over active and need a REALLY secure band.

Jesse who ares what he wants to wear - it's his body, he can wear what he likes. People seem to love judging and trying to control others. Get over it.

The fuss was more to do with his hypocrisy (criticising some old guys appearance) and his thin skin/oversensitivity.

Correct me if I am wrong but because he hated the Milanese strap?I think its ugly tbh and the design is completely different to his studded bracelet so its upto him if he prefers one over the other...

It's that long ago I can't remember exactly, heh.

He did leave himself open to criticism (which he didn't handle well) related to the Milanese strap iirc. I really have no problem with him wearing that ridiculous (to my eyes) stud thing, each to their own, but it's human nature for people to bite back when he dislikes an arguably less outlandish strap (which I'm not keen on either).

All his following comments about not being a ****ing suit sounded petulant and immature for someone in his position imo.

There was an older gentleman involved in it somehow. It was typical load of stuff and nonsense, but I can't deny I did take some pleasure in it as Nilay Patel comes off as incredibly arrogant and "my opinion is fact" on podcasts, especially after Topolsky and company left The Verge and he assumed a dictatorship.

I had to stop reading The Verge after Gamergate exploded. I didn't even know what Gamergate was at the time, but the site was flooded with a barrage of leftist opinion pieces presented as morally sound truth and fact. I refuse to accept that. I don't need anyone to tell what to think. That's why I liked Tim Stevens at Engadget; it was more fact based news presented in an enjoyable format. Opinion was present, sure, but the opinion didn't drive the news. Perhaps my memory of that time is incorrect.

However, Nilay INFURIATES me. Just the way he comes across is so pretentious and full of himself. And really, you're going to go off on Gassé and his totally innocuous comment? A man with numerous more accomplishments than you? However, I'm sure that's his fault for being a privileged white male.

We as a nation really need to step it up if Nilay is still prevented from reaching his full potential and reach Gassé-level accomplishments.

End bracelet-shaming! Suits are for the white male patriarchy! I'm only wearing one because it's ironic!

Mentioning any race is considered racist. Stop acting like you don't know that.

Even if he were possibly using that old stereotype for effect...
  1. He quickly devolves from it being the white businessman to simply being the old white guy
  2. Many of the causes a man like Nilay would support and that would benefit him (based on true reaction to Gamergate) would certainly aim to deconstruct negative stereotypes. Why would he perpetuate one?

Sometimes, the true color of people will show.
This reminds me of someone I knew, that quickly get offended on anything, and claimed people to be racists etc over simple things.
Yet he himself perpetuate racist comments on others.

Typical behavior, hiding one's self for being racist/sexist/etc by claiming others to be one.

Oh well, so many people are still liking the crap that theVerge is dolling out. People will forget.

Quite liked the Verge podcast when Topolsky and co were still there and, as above, pre gamer gate. When gg struck and they all left bar Nilay, wow did that podcast go down fast.

Way way WAY too many injokes that seemed only the staff or people who read every article could understand (I refuse to read anything with "I tried * and I liked it" in the title). Constant references to whatever Twitter meme had struck that week followed by giggling, combined with Nilay literally shouting his opinion while laughing maniacally.

I've listened to a variety of podcasts for 10 years now and I've noticed my interest, or their quality, ebbs and flows. It's natural. Never have I experienced one get so bad so fast though.

Which alternative sites do you currently read?

Engadget evolved into a commercial cesspool and The Verge with someone like this at its elm no longer interests me.

Nilay is such a tool.

Such a display of poor taste. Even back then, at the closest those things ever got to acceptance, that's still an ugly thing to strap on. But now, as a grown up man? Ridiculous.

The irony is lost on him.
Wearing that with a suit and being fat too? I would hate to see his shoes...
