So, what kind of Nintendo app WOULD lure people into the ecosystem if it is not this social avatar thing, but ALSO NOT true games as you keep mentioning (because touchscreen)?

You can only lure casual mobile gamers to a console if you show on the casual gaming platform how cool games from Nintendo actually are. You will not succeed if the versions they put on the mobile platform are about as interesting as the pattern of hairs on my butt.

I dunno, couldn't tell you, to be honest.

Though I know Sony has done a few "Advergames" in the past for Little Big Planet and a couple other franchises.

Because it's not really a game, it's more of a social interaction app.

Someone on another message board summed it up pretty well so I'm just gonna quote him here:

What you quoted sounds suspiciously like Apple's Game Center. Not trying to establish that Nintendo copied it, but making the point that the social aspect of casual gaming is quite exaggerated (Game Center is one of the lesser known Social Media failures of Apple). The driver for social interactions are the games themselves and not the social cloud around it. You cannot drive a platform by first creating a social cloud. You first need the games to attract the people.

So, Nintendo should put some teaser games on iOS? I thought that wouldn't work because of touchscreens?

I think by now you see where we are going. There is nothing interesting to be put on a mobile platform to lure people to another platform but working GAMES. At some point Nintendo will get this. Let's hope they will realise it before they are bought out by someone that does it for them in a crappy way.

I'm talking more along the line of stuff like Knack's Quest

it makes people aware of the brand and character but doesn't replicate the core game itself.

Nintendo is still a hardware company at heart, and they want to sell their hardware.

I understand. It might be a strategy. Me, however this would not sway. A candy crush clone with Mario characters is IMHO not the way to get people to buy a console for sophisticated platform games. To me this is similar to showing a trailer for a bond movie that only shows him hitting on women -> it has little relation with what it is actually about.

I wonder how successful Sony was with this.

I also think you are wrong about the hardware part. The core is still the game and they see the hardware as a powerful element of their ecosystem. If however they were a true hardware company, then they would build better quality hardware. Their failure rates might be lower than XBOX and Playstation, but the aesthetics and build quality of their consoles are not very good. Big white ugly pieces of plastic, that warp when bent. But I know that is just an opinion, so don't take this as me stating a fact.

IMO they will release whatever game to just test the waters. Believe it or not this is a totally new game ecosystem even with their experience

Knack (and the iOS game) did horribly. Which is sad cause the game (PS4 version) wasn't that bad...

What should scare everyone is if Nintendo realizes how much more money they could make from Freemium than they could otherwise. I would like to think that Nintendo is better than that, but the constant stream of dollars may prove to be too alluring.

There are already Freemium games on the 3DS and they're not obscene with their microtransactions.

That is depressing. I won't fault the cash flow, but I just don't like microtransactions... It is about as bad as releasing a game with bugs then having to download 1+GB patches day 1...

Not surprised it did bad. It's similar to having a high end Italian restaurant and to put a hotdog stand at the door to get people to come in. What Nintendo needs is a Gordon Ramsey to tell them to use their ****ing heads or their customers will **** off!!

I don't exactly want the Nintendo "classics" that would require a mimicked controller. I'm thinking of more first-person type stuff. Mario Kart would also work great. Just look at Beach Buggy Racing - that's pretty much the best game I've ever played on iOS.

But this Mittomo game looks absolutely dreadful.

Miitomo? Wh... Wha... what the hell??? I hope you lose some more money at Tokio Stock Market, Nintendo...

I was wondering... How could a crappy avatar idea like Mii survive all this time? Besides Nintendo execs and possible Myamoto, who really think that Mii's were a great ideia?

I thought the concept of Miis were great. Create avatars of yourself, friends, and family and take them into myriad of different games--from board games to sports games to driving games.

About the concept, I also think it is ok. But graphic design-wise... Arguably a bad choice...

I totally forgot about Animal Crossing. Haven't plaid that since I had an original DS.
It's a fun game on the 3DS and like another member says, New Leaf is really fun. But it does rely on dual screens so rather than a direct port, which I can't really see working well, I would love to see them come out with a new version meant to work on a smart phone.

Remember guys, the main reason Nintendo is even doing this is because of the immense pressure from the... I can't think of the word, I want to say investors... But they didn't want to produce games for mobile phones. If anything it's in their best interest to create poor selling games to sabotage the whole plan - they can go back and say "see, we told you mobile games would fail."
I hope that's what's gonna happen, but I doubt it.

Mobile games are awful, just shy of download-only, DRM-infested console/handheld games.

All very terrible. No wait, mobile is even worse, because the controls are awful and hence the GUI/gameplay generally too, at least that's for core games.
Also refer to Total Biscuit, I wholeheartedly agree with his observations:

Glassed Silver:mac

On top of all that, the recent trend of publishers refusing to update games for new OS versions is downright frightening.

It's one of the big reasons I've never really been down with digital software...once the publisher decides they don't want to support their product anymore, they pull it from the server and you're basically screwed.

I'll cherish my cartridges and discs for as long as I'll be able to purchase them.

That's not bad but I don't really want to see an avatar of myself. I'm tired of myself. I play games to get away from myself. I don't want to be some other person either. Regular humans are boring. It would be cool if we could also do that with a beloved Nintendo character that we could customize.

In my honeymoon years with the App Store, I eagerly bought Sonic the Hedgehog when SEGA first ported it to iOS, and it was miserable.

If a game that relies on a D-Pad and ONE button can't control well, I can't imagine a Mario game which sometimes requires three working well at all.
Except we now have 3D Touch so it can work much better. But Mario news can be easily played on an iPhone comfortable. 3 buttons like a sonic game are much more troublesome due to the missing feedback.
