So, what kind of Nintendo app WOULD lure people into the ecosystem if it is not this social avatar thing, but ALSO NOT true games as you keep mentioning (because touchscreen)?
You can only lure casual mobile gamers to a console if you show on the casual gaming platform how cool games from Nintendo actually are. You will not succeed if the versions they put on the mobile platform are about as interesting as the pattern of hairs on my butt.
Because it's not really a game, it's more of a social interaction app.
Someone on another message board summed it up pretty well so I'm just gonna quote him here:
I dunno, couldn't tell you, to be honest.
Though I know Sony has done a few "Advergames" in the past for Little Big Planet and a couple other franchises.
So, Nintendo should put some teaser games on iOS? I thought that wouldn't work because of touchscreens?
I think by now you see where we are going. There is nothing interesting to be put on a mobile platform to lure people to another platform but working GAMES. At some point Nintendo will get this. Let's hope they will realise it before they are bought out by someone that does it for them in a crappy way.
I'm talking more along the line of stuff like Knack's Quest

it makes people aware of the brand and character but doesn't replicate the core game itself.
Nintendo is still a hardware company at heart, and they want to sell their hardware.
Knack (and the iOS game) did horribly. Which is sad cause the game (PS4 version) wasn't that bad...I understand. It might be a strategy. Me, however this would not sway. A candy crush clone with Mario characters is IMHO not the way to get people to buy a console for sophisticated platform games. To me this is similar to showing a trailer for a bond movie that only shows him hitting on women -> it has little relation with what it is actually about.
I wonder how successful Sony was with this.
I also think you are wrong about the hardware part. The core is still the game and they see the hardware as a powerful element of their ecosystem. If however they were a true hardware company, then they would build better quality hardware. Their failure rates might be lower than XBOX and Playstation, but the aesthetics and build quality of their consoles are not very good. Big white ugly pieces of plastic, that warp when bent. But I know that is just an opinion, so don't take this as me stating a fact.
What should scare everyone is if Nintendo realizes how much more money they could make from Freemium than they could otherwise. I would like to think that Nintendo is better than that, but the constant stream of dollars may prove to be too alluring.IMO they will release whatever game to just test the waters. Believe it or not this is a totally new game ecosystem even with their experience

That is depressing. I won't fault the cash flow, but I just don't like microtransactions... It is about as bad as releasing a game with bugs then having to download 1+GB patches day 1...There are already Freemium games on the 3DS and they're not obscene with their microtransactions.

I was wondering... How could a crappy avatar idea like Mii survive all this time? Besides Nintendo execs and possible Myamoto, who really think that Mii's were a great ideia?
I thought the concept of Miis were great. Create avatars of yourself, friends, and family and take them into myriad of different games--from board games to sports games to driving games.
About the concept, I also think it is ok. But graphic design-wise... Arguably a bad choice...
It's a fun game on the 3DS and like another member says, New Leaf is really fun. But it does rely on dual screens so rather than a direct port, which I can't really see working well, I would love to see them come out with a new version meant to work on a smart phone.I totally forgot about Animal Crossing. Haven't plaid that since I had an original DS.
I hope that's what's gonna happen, but I doubt it.Remember guys, the main reason Nintendo is even doing this is because of the immense pressure from the... I can't think of the word, I want to say investors... But they didn't want to produce games for mobile phones. If anything it's in their best interest to create poor selling games to sabotage the whole plan - they can go back and say "see, we told you mobile games would fail."
That's not bad but I don't really want to see an avatar of myself. I'm tired of myself. I play games to get away from myself. I don't want to be some other person either. Regular humans are boring. It would be cool if we could also do that with a beloved Nintendo character that we could customize.I thought the concept of Miis were great. Yes, but that doesn't help me to play on my phone Mario games legally.Good news! Nintendo has two platforms currently on the marketplace that are full of Mario and Pokemon titles.
Except we now have 3D Touch so it can work much better. But Mario news can be easily played on an iPhone comfortable. 3 buttons like a sonic game are much more troublesome due to the missing feedback. In my honeymoon years with the App Store, I eagerly bought Sonic the Hedgehog when SEGA first ported it to iOS, and it was miserable.
If a game that relies on a D-Pad and ONE button can't control well, I can't imagine a Mario game which sometimes requires three working well at all.
