Gameloft had 170 mln euros revenue in 2010. All appstores, Google, Apple and Nokia ones combined made a litle over 2 billion dollars in revenue last year. Nintendo had 12 billion dollars revenue in 2010.

Apple is making a killing on iPhones, nobody else is. It doesn't matter if 3DS sells four times worse than iPhone does, Nintendo will still make far more on it than they ever could as appstore developer.

You're right.

The article says that Nintendo is facing increasing investor pressure to develop titles for the iPhone and other platforms.

Not for Nintendo to drop the cash-cow that is the 3DS.

But what happens when people stop buying dedicated gaming hardware... such as the 3DS?

How many kids will be asking for an iPod Touch for Christmas?

Nintendo's hardware sales are down. Their software sales are down. Revenue is down... that's never good news. :(

This is almost funny.
Nintendo didn't slash prices because of poor sales, they did so to compete with the Vita.

Also, it's retarded to even SPECULATE that the iPhone has become anywhere near as much of a power house portable game platform as the DS line is/were...

How quaint to keep hearing this argument its the same as many in 2008 and which has now become the lone voice who no-one takes any notice of. (Too busy playing iOS games probably).

If you wanted to purchase one of these type of devices...

What would you choose ?

This Awesome well made full screen beast

Image

Or this rinky dinky plastic joke with a tiny screen ....2 tiny screens

Image

Well, The 3DS Looks like a mini MacBook Pro… And knowing how muck I like the size of the original DS, It would probably be more comfortable as well…
Stylus screen…2 screens (all though I have to admit not making the top screen sensitive to stylus taps was a dumb idea)

Oh yeah… I can't even name 5 titles for the PSP, let alone the Vita…
Nintendo's UI is WAY better then Sony's… And I have all my content on my iPod… I have no need for the Media functionality of the Vita…

How do you know that the Vita is well made? Do you own one?

Only reason I don't own a 3DS is because I'm waiting
to see what the 3DS Lite is like…

In my opinion

Nintendo better get with the Apple future or it might follow the footsteps of Nokia, Palm, etc.

I secretly wish they would get bought out so i can play Mario Kart and Zelda games on another system... :(

less kids will be asking for the ipod touch now than if they made mario etc for ios. this is precisely why they either a) simply wont make anything for ios, or b) make titles specifically for ios that do not include or involve any of their big name IP's

and i'd guess everything is down because everything is pretty much EOL right now. the 3DS is a DS that does 3d, i'm sure most people are happy with their regular DS. the wii gets replaced soon and after the sales boom they had for so long i'd assume everyone that wants one already has one.

as for the price cuts... when did this become a sign of doom and gloom? it had 3d, the current trend in A/V. this is completely normal in the tech industry. you milk the early adopters for as much as you can, then you slowly bring the price down over the next months/years (depending on the devices life span) to maintain sales and make it more appealing to the masses. take the PS3 as an example. everyone thought sony were out of it, low sales, too highly priced... they brought the price down and started selling the device at a loss!!! is the PS3 dead? have sony abandoned the console market?

edit: going back to my first paragraph... how many kids would actually get the ipod touch they are asking for? the DS (in any iteration) is quite child proof. apples gear not so much.

I think there is still market for a dedicated consoles. For me, playing a game on a console with physical buttons is a lot more engaging than playing a game on a touch device. I agree that Nintendo's devices are not the best looking, but their games do have a market appeal for certain age demographic.

Wii is at the end of its life-cycle, having sold millions...
DS (and the other portables) is at the end of its life-cycle, having sold millions...
3DS, flagship titles still 6 months away, i would wait too.
etc.

Second, the gamer is not a kid. Its a young, oft-male, adult. Kids don't have money, so who gives. Nintendo will continue to make a fortune for years to come. The gamers of today will soon all have kids, and then the cycle repeats! No iphone (or other crappy gaming device) will ever change that.

Will people play games on their phones and pads? Of course, but thats a complement, not a competitor. At least in the foreseeable future.

I could be wrong, but I think forcing the classic Mario and Zelda experience down the throat of the iOS user would be bad news. Games like Angry Birds are popular because they make best use of the touch screen instead of trying to simulate the d-pad gaming experience. Because of this, Nintendo would need to focus on making games for the "on the go" gamers. I know this doesn't apply to everyone, but my favorite iOS games aren't really that in-depth. A good iOS game should still be fun, even if only played for a couple minutes. I'm willing to save the hardcore gaming for my PS3 or 360.

Ummm u kno jus because a game is for sale doesn't mean people have to buy it. No one will be forcing anything down anyone's throat. Millions will buy nintendo games on their own willingly. Why is having more gaming options bad for the consumer?!?!

If you can't beat them, join them...

....Pokémon on the iPhone? I'd pay any amount of money for that!

I think it's just a matter of time...

And if my prediction comes true... i.e. we see some changes this fall to bring gaming to ATV... the pressure will be on.

Plus, I'd love Mario Kart on iOS! :)

And I rather take dedicated games over casual 1$-Angry Bird stuff any day.

Personally, I like both. I have an XBOX 360 for my "real" gaming, like Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2, Fallout, PGR, etc.

Then there's the quick and casual games I like to play on my 3GS, yes including Angry Birds, which I think is a great. And hey, you can't bring a console to the bathroom! And a console doesn't let you call your wife to bring down some toilet paper! :D

It's not one or the other, although every thread in here seems to say that technologies, companies, gaming platforms can't coexist...

You know its a sad day when Nintendo are in trouble. :(

I may get out my N64 to reminisce in the good 'ol days. /wipes a tear*

I've always thought that a Nintendo / Apple partnership would do wonders for both companies. Think of playing Zelda on your Apple TV with a Wii remote!

Nintendo makes those family friendly games that Apple would love to promote.

Apple pushes technology in new and innovative ways, just like Nintendo.

Is thus going to happen? No. But it would be pretty cool if it did.

hmm

I can see nintendo releasing new ups just for the iPhone .

Mario and the others will be horrible to control without buttons.

I did have an idea though. Nintendo work with apple to release a controller add on that maybe slides underneath the iPhone/ipod touch. (like a slide keyboard on some phones). Maybe work with apple to put the programming parts into iOS itself so all games can access it.

This way nintendo can bring over mario and things like that with actual button controls.

Anyway unless hardware buttons come into play i can see nintendo creating new ups just for the iPhone but without physical buttons I don't see their normal ip's.

Nintendo also stated they would dissolve the company before going software only. So nintendo would have to have a serious rethink in order to develop games for ios.

PS I also think Nintendo should really partner with apple and make the next console a version of the apple tv. Nintendo and apple seem like a perfect fit.

I'd love to see some old school pokemon or mario games on iOS without the need for a 3rd party jailbreak emulator. I hope this isn't too far away.

...

I think they should bring legacy titles to iOS like nintendo, SNES, etc but keep new titles for current gen hardware proprietary. Reason being is they can sell 10 million copies of mario for 99 cents or they can sell 10 million 3DS and they will make more money of the 3DS by a long shot. They could easily port old titles over with an emulator which probably already even exists for jailbreak and just include mario 1 and duck hunt with the emulator and have the rest as in app purchases. I don't see nintendo dropping portable hardware at all

It would be nice to be able to play some of the Mario titles on my iPhone. In the past I have been known to jailbreak to be able to do this.

Honestly the could stand to make a good amount of money simply having a licensed SNES emulator application for free, and offer 99¢ game titles.

Why would you need to compete with something that won't be out til next year? Now that's panic right there. Why not wait til the vita actually has a US release date. It's obviously to compete with iPhone/iPod touch.

I agree with your general argument, but in the case of Angry Birds vs Nintendo games, I think it's fair to assume people would pay way more than a dollar for a proper port of, say, Super Mario Bros.
The whole strategy of Nintendo is based on the fact that there are millions of people who wouldn't just pay coupl dollars more for such games, but will buy the whole handheld just to play them :)

That said, I doubt even Nintendo could ever reach Angry Birds numbers on iOS with 10$ or more games. Already freemium games revenue completely dwarfs everything else on appstore. Most smartphone games simply aren't willing to buy expensive games.

I cannot believe how many people are missing one of the biggest selling points of Nintendo 3DS - it's great for kids.

Pick up your iPhone and drop it on the floor. Did it break? Quite possibly. Now do the same with your 3DS. And do it again, and again and again. No breaks.

The clamshell design protects it, and that's why it's a great device to give to a child. They're just so durable.

But let's not stop there. How does your eight year old buy games? With her credit card? Look at the smile on her face when she finds an iOS game under the tree for Christmas. Just a priceless family moment watching her unwrap it.

Just bring the original super Mario bros. Game and Mario kart over to iPad and I'm good

Anyone who has followed the gaming industry for any amount of time will know how silly this story is.

As long as Nintendo is still making platforms (handhelds and consoles), you'll never see any of their big properties -- Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc. -- appear on a competitor's product.

Nintendo uses those tiles to move product. Often the only compelling reason to own a Nintendo product is to play Nintendo first-party titles. Remove those from the equation and no one would pick up anything they had to offer.
