Nah, you're out of touch with reality. 3DS and WiiU are far more innovative than anything Apple has done in recent years. I think both are terrible ideas, but they are innovative.
The biggest reason why Nintendo is in trouble right now is because they put to much focus into innovation ignoring everything else.

Motion controls of Wii & touch controls of DS definitely were very innovative, and I think nobody can deny that. But I'm not so sure about WiiU & 3DS being innovative (WiiU = charged up Wii with touchscreen from DS in the control pad, 3DS = pretty much only enhanced DS with 3D screen)

Clearly a lot of non-gamers here!

Clearly a lot of people don't visit the App Store.

Just one example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_DS_video_games

Total Nintendo DS games sold as of March 31, 2011: 839.48 million.

Yea so Nintendo are going to give this up to sell cut down horribly controlling phone games.

Plus Nintendo get a nice slice of the pie from any other title released on their platforms. Anyone who seriously thinks they will give all that up to become another 'me too' phone game house churning out derivative titles after a few months development are deluding themselves.

You're missing the point...

This isn't about how many DS games were sold over the past 7 years...

This is about future sales... and how people are leaning towards mobile devices like cell phones... NOT dedicated gaming hardware.

Look.... Nintendo just drastically dropped the price of their newest handheld... they must be worried about something...

Quite honestly you are deluding yourself if you think Nintendo will give up all of what they are to become just another third party publisher.

What good is all that software if no one is buying the hardware? (hence the price cut)

I hear you man... tactile physical controls are also required for a full gaming experience.

But Nintendo is supposed to be the king of portable gaming... and yet they cut the price of their newest device because it wasn't selling very well.

Nintendo predicted they would sell 16 million 3DS in the first year.

Apple sells 20 million iPhones in a quarter.

Plus... no one is suggesting Nintendo should sell games for $1

Maybe $10 for a decent game with good replay value?

Have a few more and then try playing a Mario platformer, that is how it will feel trying to play it on a touchscreen only interface.

Nintendo doesn't have to re-create all their games on a touchscreen. But they can make NEW games specifically for the interface.

If not... Nintendo can focus on making games for the 3DS which will be $129 by Christmas.

I don't think both are huge innovations (compared to Wii and DS), but they are innovation. On the other hand there was really nothing innovative about iPad, it's succeeded because it did what others did before, only infinitely better.

The mistake Nintendo made was assuming people were already tired of Wii and DS innovations, so instead of improving what they had and this giving consumers what they expected they desperately searched for something new. Both 3DS and WiiU scream of innovation solely for the sake of innovation.

They've been committing slow suicide for a couple of years now.

Quite RIM-like, actually. In both cases denial is playing a major role.
Your logic makes sense only if you think Nintendo could replace Apple. So Nintendo I guess should start making their own smartphones?

Even if 3DS will end up being flop compared to DS Nintendo will still make far more money off it than they ever could as appstore developer.

Rim is actually a great analogy. What you suggesting is the same thing as RIM closing down their hardware divisions and just making BB mail client for iPhone. Which basically means transforming from huge corporation to petite development studio.

This is almost funny.
Nintendo didn't slash prices because of poor sales, they did so to compete with the Vita.

Also, it's retarded to even SPECULATE that the iPhone has become anywhere near as much of a power house portable game platform as the DS line is/were...

a
Gameloft had 170 mln euros revenue in 2010. All appstores, Google, Apple and Nokia ones combined made a litle over 2 billion dollars in revenue last year.
Nintendo had 12 billion dollars revenue in 2010.

Apple is making a killing on iPhones, nobody else is. It doesn't matter if 3DS sells four times worse than iPhone does, Nintendo will still make far more on it than they ever could as appstore developer.

This is exactly the point that the likes of LTD seem to be spectacularly missing.
Android outsells the iPhone and all we hear is that is does not matter as Apple make more money. Yet Nintendo make more on games than pretty much every other portable device manufacturer do combined and yet they are doomed.

Both Nintendo and Sony should bring their games to the iOS platform. However, we really don't need any crappy ports of the games. They need to be developed from the ground up. The only problem will be the controls. I feel that some games should continue to have physical buttons. I just don't know why there haven't been that many third-party developers designing hand-controllers for the iPod Touch so it can be used by touch and physical buttons. Whatever. I would like to see Mario games on iOS. I honestly hope it doesn't put Nintendo competely out of business.

This could happen.

Assuming Apple will be okay with Nintendo releasing a co-branded iPhone / iPod / iPad with a slide out controller, and allow co-development on the innards of future hardware.

If not...less chance.

Arent you missing the ops point? You might not know anyone spending 100's for 1 game but there are millions spending 1's for 1 game... The end result for the developer is the same if not better.
Newest Pokemon sold 12 million units..of full priced cardridges. All versions of Angry Birds on all platforms managed to this day merely bring 50 mln euros in Revenue.
Bassicaly there are enough poeople willing to buy 30+ dollars cardridges to completely dwarf any money those 1 dollars games could ever bring.

Appstore is good for small devs, expecting giants like Nintendo to switch their focus to it is just plain silly.

As everybody else here, I think Mario on the iPhone would be amazing.
If Nintendo does this, they should also make a classical button interface that can go on top of the iPhone (buttons and arrows on each side of the bezel like the PSP).

But will this ever happen? Seriously, I think it's more likely we'll se a Nintendo Phone before we see Nintendo porting their games to iOS.

One can hope.

I agree with your general argument, but in the case of Angry Birds vs Nintendo games, I think it's fair to assume people would pay way more than a dollar for a proper port of, say, Super Mario Bros.

Imagine a pokemon, mario kart, or mario bros. game for your ios device? That would literally be amazing.

I think nintendo is more likely to steer away from such a solution, however. A lot of people own these devices, and if they were to start developing their games for it, they may not attract as many people to their own portable.

They might develop some cheesy version of them just to get people interested, and then hopefully have them then purchase the portable.
