What I was thinking is, if I do good in school this year, I can get a scholarship. As I progress, I can try to apply for more, thus lightening to load. One that I already applied for is 5g, so maybe that will help.

That's a good idea.. make sure you run that buy him. But i must say.. When i was 20 and got my m3 it didn't take much to realize it was more car then I knew how to handle at the time. So if/when you get this car make sure you repect it and know your limits. It's easy to get in trouble/killed with a car like that.

Yeah, I got pulled over once in my friends 350z, and the officer said "Your the kind we like to feast on, so dont let me catch you doing anything stupid" and was looking in the car like we were hiding drugs or something.

But I never got into a accident or a ticket.

Well I've been driving since Aug 2007. My mom lets me use her car and hates driving, so I think im pretty safe. I also have driven my friends 350z a lot.

I dont usually go far down here in college, but I need a car and since maybe this can be an opportunity to get a 350z, I think I can take that chance.

mmm... depending on the school, you should rather use the scholarship money on COLLEGE first before your insurance costs... but if you do have left over, I don't see why you can't use it to pay for insurance.

Secondly, I'm not saying your a bad driver or don't know have to drive a car. What I am saying is that as long as you are a safe driver, you wouldn't really need to worry about insurance costs going up. Also, every car is different, I've driven tons of different cars already (RSX, Civic (older gen), Civic (Current gen), Civic SI, Fit, Altima, S2K, 350z, G35, 330i, Tribute, Evo, etc.) and every car, even if its the same model, feels a little different.

Now you say you started driving approx. 6 months ago, is that when you got your license? If so, do expect your insurance to be pretty high, but do shop around. The longer you have your license, the lower your insurance because they look at your record. If you have near nothing of a record (less then a year, and I'm talking about license, not permit), they'll consider you as a high risk driver even you could be driving like a granny.

True, but I got behind last year due to room mate, dorm, and personal issues and missed my scholarship by .1. This year so far I have gotten 3 B's in all my classes (they're slow at handing out grade, but those were on projects and quizzes). When my dad found out, he said "We could have used that leftover money on something for your car." I think he would have gotten me one last semester, but he said this one he will.

True, and the thing is, I have 2 friends with 350z, one in NY with a stick(NISMO) and the one down here is Auto. So I might be a little rusty if I happen to pick up a manual, but I kinda want one. Driving a manual is more adrenaline pumping if you know what I mean. (Not that I would go crazy, I just like shifting gears myself).

Yeah, I had my permit for 1.5 years and got my license early Aug 07.

Yes, stick is more fun, unless you drive in traffic. I drive an auto myself (cause the car I got was a 16th b-day present from my parents... so I couldn't really complain) but just get whatever you want, theres nothing different imo. And I didn't really mean the gear shift, I meant the car itself might feel a little different, at least thats what I felt when I test drove 2 different Honda Fits at the dealership, both stick.

Do as what someone else said here, put your insurance along with your family's insurance plan. It'll give you multi-car discounts or whatever discounts your insurance company offers. It could save HUNDREDS in costs per year. Since you only had your license for 1/2 year, its gonna be high, no way around it. And I seriously DO NOT recommend driving without insurance. Its not worth it at all, same reason we have medical insurance. You don't expect things to happen but its always good to be prepared.

Anyways, I got class.

Oh yeah, the amount of backups daily in the city of Atlanta due to construction? The thing is I dont hit the highway unless im going back to see my mom. Even then I just go in the early morning and leave in the late afternoon to avoid rush hour traffic.

And yeah, I havent driven an 03-04.

Alright, well I'll see what he says. IF B Y SOME MIRACLE HE DECIDES TO TRY IT, He'll most likely find the cheapest way possible so I'll mention it.

And you can drive without insurance? My mom said you couldnt register a car without doing so...
Anyways, I got class.
Have fun, just got out like 2 hours ago.

So you know though, it will most likely be over $200 per month to cover you on a car like that.
I'd say much more-- especially as being a new and "nicer" car, your insurance will want full coverage on that sucker.

350Z insurance is HIGH! With only 2 seats..
Yes. 2-seater. Sports car. Brand new. Young male driver. Insurance will hurt.

My father's worked in insurance industry for over two decades. I spent 2 months helping out in the office. 1) It's an industry I never want to work in and 2) your insurance will hurt for that car. :p

drive without insurance??? You can't even get a license without liability insurance. As for collision/comprehensive insurance on your car, if you are making payments on it, it's a requirement by the lien holder... Why you'd want to drive a ~$30K car without full coverage is beyond me...

Well, its not legal and yes, you can't register a car anymore if you don't have insurance, but people do it anyways just to save money. I remember when we canceled the insurance for my dad's SUV that he was selling (he didn't even drive it anymore), the DMV sent us letters saying we better buy insurance or the registration would be halted.

So in the long run it wouldnt be worth it?

NO! It's illegal, aka, you can go to jail, you can be sued, your parents can be sued, etc! Serious serious liability issues there! Either pony up for the insurance or get a bike and start pedaling!

what ccwilli3 said.

Damn. Insurance is a bitch. But that's life I guess.

I guess I'll still attempt it and if you guys want I can give you an update on it.

I know my dad mentioned a Toyota Corolla, but even so this car is still cheaper than his, so I really want to attempt it.

If he says no, I'll take it along with whatever car he has in mind, and wait until I get a good paying job and even buy a 06-7. (I saw a mockup of the 08......meh, naaah)

and for the new driver, if you can afford it, go with a higher coverage. I have 50/100/100 instead of the law's requirement of 25/50?/50? here.

Better to be safe then sorry.

Insurance on a 350 will hurt and hurt again. When I was 18 I had to pay £1500 to insure a £450 1986 Vauxhall Nova with a 1.2 engine. Utter lunacy. Now add that to a two car with a much bigger engine that cost ~40x mine.

My advice go for a much more sensible car, two seats will be annoying when trying to transport friends and the bigger engine will just lend itself to trouble, let alone much higher running costs.

Get a 5 door, after all cars are expensive to buy so you don't want to have to buy a more practical car when you find you need one in 5 years time.

What if I attempted no insurance?
I'm sorry, any amount of empathy, sympathy, "respect" whatever positive or neutral feelings I may have felt towards this thread... has gone down the drain with that post.

That line of thought shows to me, that you're not ready for this car.

My parents wouldnt get a car without insurance, it was justa "What if..." question while we were on that topic.

Ok, it was just a question anyways.

Most of my friends have cars ranging from mustangs to Lexus' to Mini Coopers and Audis and whatnot. So transportation of friends is not an issue for me. If anything, I will still carpool with them if we plan to go anywhere (saves me gas).

Also, what happens with a bigger engine? Sorry, I like to know stuff.

I think if daddy's paying, that doesn't really matter...

Its pretty much only until I get out of college, then once I get a job I'll be more than willing to take insurance off his hands (being so once I do, I wont have a choice).

unlike the uk, we require somewat of a large engine. you cant even find a car with a 1.3L engine. usually they go around 1.5 to 2.0 for a 4 cyl. and unless your car can accelerate 0 to 60 in about 10 seconds... its tough to get on the highway

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, that's the poorest bit of reasoning I've EVER come across!
Well done!
