Clearly more revenue and thus profit. Which is no surprise, they are a business after all.

From a business stand point they have me hook line and sinker.

If the base model was 32 I would just get that, no brainer. And if they kept everything the same (16, 32, and 64) I wouldn't be able to justify spending 100 dollars for a mere 16 gb more so I would have gone with the 16 gb model. NOW though they 64 gb (48 gb more) is a clear contrast and I'll certainly be going that route, giving Apple 100 dollars more then I normally would have.

Exactly my line of thought.

Nothing was bad about what Apple did (replace 32GB option with 64GB), it is only a good thing. The prices are now a little more in line with what the components cost. But Apple is doing what it does best... profit. They set an acceptable entry price, and then, with these storage options, make you think: if you pay that much, why not pay a comparatively small amount more.

Apple basically creates scenarios that make a customer's storage option decision difficult, because it measures customer demand and creates a scenario where it maximizes profit. (which is economics, cost vs demand) For example, if the storage tiers were $50 instead of $100, Apple knows customers would opt for the highest tier because customers would feel like they were getting the most of their money's worth with that option. On the other hand, if Apple kept the old $100 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB tiers, the money wise decision would be to get the entry level model.

And another dimension to this is since flash storage has decreased in price so much the last few years (which is due to increased demand and thus production improvements), many iPhone users still have the perception that it is expensive. Samsung phone users know it is much cheaper now, because they have had experience buying quality 64GB Sandisk SD cards for $36! But so many iPhone users do not know that flash storage is now as cheap as it is, so they will still gladly pay for overpriced iPhone storage. It is simply a matter of many users' perception, due to the rapid decrease in flash storage prices, and Apple is milking that to maximize profits.

Or maybe it was a production limitation and they had to make a choice. They really wanted to provide 128GB options but it was either only offer 16,32,or 64 or 16,64, or 128... Knowing Apple they WILL provide a 32GB option just not until the demand settles down.

Sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one verses some grand conspiracy to make you pay more.

Yes, all of the demand would have been for the 32GB model had Apple put that as the base storage. But when Apple makes 32GB the base storage in the future, the 64GB option would have to come even further down in price, because no one would pay $100 for an extra 32GB after paying $100 for an extra 48GB (with the iPhone 6).

Therefore, when Apple must make 32GB the base storage, the 64GB option must be $50 or $80 more. There are only 2 possibilities for 32GB base, and one of these will be Apple's next storage options:
1:
32GB $199
64GB $279 (+$80)
128GB $349 (+$70)
2:
32GB $199
64GB $249 (+$50)
128GB $299 (+$50)

By my calculations, Apple won't switch to 32GB as base in 2 years minimum.

Which makes me wonder why 32GB never replaced the 16gb. Aslong as they don't try and give us a 8gb iphone 6.

Only thing I can think of is many many users, (eg. My parents, my boss, people over 35) who will be purchasing the base model no matter what, don't NEED 32 GB. They won't use that much. So might as well just sell the 16 as the base model and save money not giving consumers more than they will use.

The basic marketing decision seems like a simpler expiation than that.

You're assuming it's a marketing decision. A logical fallacy and makes it sound like a conspiracy. You have to explain the marketing decision behind it which you refuse to do because you have to basis for it.

Logical fallacy? conspiracy? Sounds like we are talking about completely different things here. I don't refuse to explain anything as I haven't even been asked to do it. Seems like we having completely different conversations here apparently.

iOS 8 takes up additional space compared to 7. So you would actually only gain a few GB going from 16 to 32GB. So you were going to pay extra for not even 10GB of additional usable space.

I don't think it has anything to do with iCloud Drive. You're still going to use it whether you have a 128GB device or a 16GB if you want the syncing. Everything is synced online, but the majority of it you will keep locally too.

How simple is it to see? The 16gb (and cheapest) is the best selling. If they offered the 32gb as a base, many people would say "16gb is too little, 32gb is all I needed and 64gb is overkill, it's the base model, awesome!" And it saves the consumer money. Apple is not in the business of saving the consumer money.

Now, consumers say "16gb is too little, so I must upgrade".. the people that would have bought the $100 cheaper base model if it was 32gb are now buying the 64b middle model, increasing Apple's profit by $100. The people who don't care if it's 1gb or 16gb are going to buy the base model regardless.

This is exactly my line of thought as well. I wouldn't spend $100 for 16GB more, but I would spend it for 48GB more. I think the 64GB versions are going to be very popular.

Bingo, a rather straightforward marketing decision. There could be more to it for sure, but that definitely seems like the simpler explanation.

the people who are complaining about this are the ones who only get the lowest GB models... they WANTED the 32GB without paying more, get it?

Apple are being stingy bastards.

I was going to get a 32 GB version because that is how much space I need.

64 is wayy too much for my needs and 16 is not enough.

I might just be a Stingy Bastard myself and go with the 16 gb version just to spite them and not give them the extra 100. Sure it will suck and it will limit what I can do with the phone but its not worth it to me to pay for so much extra space I will Never use.

Is the 64GB not the same price as the previous 32Gb now though? You are getting double the space regardless of whether you use it for the same money!

I am sure you'll really teach Apple a lesson by purchasing the 16GB lol. You are spiting yourself and your protest will be lost because I doubt they will care two hoots. :)

They should have started all the phones at 32gb and dropped the 16gb options.

As it is you get less then 14 gb out of the box. Because about 2 gigs are already tied up.

Last Night I deleted all the games and video I had from my iphone 5 32gb and with the audio books iam currently listening to and a few apps iam just at the 16gb threshold.

It leaves no overhead for taking video with the device.

No 32GB Model for the iPhone 6?

im not sure if I'm happy the 64gb took the 32gb's place, because i would rather have had a 32gb base.

If they had done that then you wouldn't have to shell out more for a higher capacity model!

A base model isn't supposed to be the most practical. It exists in part to make the other models look better.

If the base model was 32GB most people would settle for that. They know they need to offer more storage, but they also know that there's more profit in an upgrade.

we will pay for 32GB and get 64GB i think that is really a good deal, but i have no problem with 16GB is really enough for me and i m fine with it. so i m planing to go with 16GB.

i like it. my company always bought the 32GB versions, because 16GB is not enough.

next time i get a new iphone it will have 64GB, because there's no 32GB version. yay

troy14 you are right on the money. I think its funny reading the comments of all those making excuses for Apple, like they are on the marketing payroll. A 16gb 5s has 12.83gb of useable storage initially. With ios 8 being even bigger than ios 7, that will probably decrease. The camera resolution has and will only increase meaning that photos and videos consume more space, not less. You throw a few games on there, and lets not forget the 'ever so reliable' "other" category storage leakage. Throw some albums on there(cause yea it is an ipod) and you will burn through 16gb in no time. Those who have the 16gb 4's & 5's know that 16gb is nowhere near enough storage. Apple knows this too, which is why 32gb was not the base. Amazing how these Apple can do no wrong advocates are saying "you're getting a bonus", when every flagship Android phone released since May has had a base of 32gb of storage(not to mention that storage can be expanded another 32gb for as cheap as $20 with an sd card). Apple is all about profit, not the consumers, and as long as people keep excusing this behavior they will continue to screw over the consumer.

I know what everyone's bitch is you wanted the 32gb for the price of the 16. Man UP and shell out the extra $100 and get the 64gb.

They aren't increasing their profit by $100.

We don't know what the price difference is between the 16gb chip and 64gb chip is. Probably not $0. If I recall, for the iPhone 5, the difference in price between these two capacities was over $30.

No one is getting screwed, Apple is just marketing things better. Sure, it would be nice if the 32 GB was the base version for the same price as the 16 GB one was....just as it would be nice to get more extra options in a car for the price of the based model with no options.
