troy14 you are right on the money. I think its funny reading the comments of all those making excuses for Apple, like they are on the marketing payroll. A 16gb 5s has 12.83gb of useable storage initially. With ios 8 being even bigger than ios 7, that will probably decrease. The camera resolution has and will only increase meaning that photos and videos consume more space, not less. You throw a few games on there, and lets not forget the 'ever so reliable' "other" category storage leakage. Throw some albums on there(cause yea it is an ipod) and you will burn through 16gb in no time. Those who have the 16gb 4's & 5's know that 16gb is nowhere near enough storage. Apple knows this too, which is why 32gb was not the base. Amazing how these Apple can do no wrong advocates are saying "you're getting a bonus", when every flagship Android phone released since May has had a base of 32gb of storage(not to mention that storage can be expanded another 32gb for as cheap as $20 with an sd card). Apple is all about profit, not the consumers, and as long as people keep excusing this behavior they will continue to screw over the consumer.

Apple is all about profit? ALL companies are all about profit. That's why they exist. Don't think for a second that those other companies wouldn't do exactly the same thing if they could. Is it greedy? Yes, but unfortunately that's just how capitalism works.

No one is getting screwed, Apple is just marketing things better. Sure, it would be nice if the 32 GB was the base version for the same price as the 16 GB one was....just as it would be nice to get more extra options in a car for the price of the based model with no options.

Great analogy, but as technology gets better we all know components get cheaper. Options like cd players with mp3 compatibility and bluetooth used to be expensive optional upgrades in a car. Now you cant get a base model without those things included. Apple is selling you a newer model car, and saying if you want what every other car manufacturer is including in their base model for cheaper, you have to pay us more, a lot more. You would laugh in a car salesman face if he told you that. So why does Apple get a pass?

If the car company has a certain prestige around it, then yes, they can and will charge you more. This is not something exclusive to Apple.

Besides which, no other brand can offer you exactly what Apple has: Their software. iOS and it's App Store are a big reason people buy iPhones.

Check out what they did with the iPhone 5C -- it's now available only in an 8GB(!) version: http://store.apple.com/us/iphone/family/iphone/compare

The 5C was always $100 less than the 5S, for the same amount of storage -- now, they've dropped the price of each phone by $100, but halved the 5C storage to an absurdly small amount. The 8GB wasn't even sold here in the U.S. before now! They introduced it (and pulled the 16 & 32GB versions) specifically for this CLASSY MOVE; which seems designed to guarantee that almost no one will get away with paying only $450 for a new iPhone. (At least, direct from Apple -- I see that T-Mobile is still selling the 16 & 32GB variants for $480 / $500, respectively.)

Probably the same way that when Toyota includes it in their base model, while BMW might not. It's a brand decision. Doesn't make it right or wrong. People can vote with their wallets, that's the market system in play right there.
