I have a mobility impairment, and find myself often invoking force touch when I mean to do long press and vice versa. I suspect a lot of older users might also have this problem.

Yeah, although my mum isn't impaired, she does have arthritis and is in her 70'S! She doesn't have any problems using her iPad but I think she could with 3D Touch.
I think the Touch ID would be good for her, but 3D Touch would just confuse her if it activated, I would probably turn it off even.

My theory is that with the current technology, you can't have both 3D touch and Apple Pencil support. Its either one or the other. Now if the iPad Air 3 comes out and doesn't have Pencil support either, then I don't know what Apple is doing. An iPad Air 3 with only a spec bump will not be nearly enough to justify an upgrade (after all, the iPad Air 2 is still a top performing tablet).

Apple Pencil support will be key to the iPad Air 3 flying off shelves. Keeping the Apple Pencil exclusive to the iPad Pro which is too big and too expensive for most people, would be a big mistake. I'm hoping to step up from my iPad mini 2 so hopefully Apple can pull through.

The report confirms the iPhone 7 will be released in 2016, likely around Apple's usual September timeframe.

Wow, I would never have guessed that! Hard to fathom it's somebody's day job to make such predictions.

Now, more useful would be to know when there finally will be a 13" Macbook Pro with Skylake...

new 4" iphone with iphone 6s spec please.. and i'll be sticking with this damn thing at least until 2018. h

The iPad Air 3 may be the iPad 3 all over again. Wouldn't be surprised to see another iPad Air 4 six months later.

I rather see a full functioning and full featured iPad Air 3 in fall 2016 vs a half assed iPad Air 3 in Q1 2016.

Even if it's the same spec? I would be okay if iPad Air 3 releases in Q1 and then nothing for another 18 months.

Have you tried messing with sensitivity?

I think the Touch ID would be good for her, but 3D Touch would just confuse her if it activated, I would probably turn it off even.

There is a setting to change sensitivity? You can turn it off? I didn't know that! I'll go try this right now, thanks.

EDIT: ok, tried the sensitivity settings, and they don't seem to help. My problem is that the motion I do for long press feels the same to me as the motion needed to do 3D Touch. I can't "feel" a difference between the two. Changing the sensitivity doesn't seem to change the "feel."

Wish the iPad had it now.
Apple seems a bit uncertain when it comes to 3D Touch.

Perhaps it's value is as a marketing gimmick as opposed to a useful feature. My experience with it has been mediocre at best.

I find much better speed and a better overall experience by not using it. That is also a consensus amongst others at work also.

Apple does seem a bit desperate to add on extra features as the luster wears off.

In that Bloomberg article on 3D Touch Jony Ive said things are released whe they're ready, not held back. I'm sure cynics would never believe that but honestly if 3D Touch was ready for iPad Pro why leave it off? It's not like iPad Pro with 3D Touch would cannibalize iPhone sales. And intentionally leaving it off to have something for 2nd gen doesn't really make sense. I'm sure there are a number of people holding off buying an iPad until it gets 3D Touch. Wouldn't Apple rather get that sale now rather than hope they'll get it a year or two from now?

It could be possible that Apple is still figuring out how to implement 3D Touch on a much larger display. Perhaps it added too much weight to the device. Maybe there is a shortage of the Taptic Engine and iPhone gets first priority. Maybe getting 3D Touch to play nice with Apple pencil is a difficult engineering challenge. It seems any one of these is more likely than Phil Schiller saying leave it out so I have something to sell next year.

Given that reducing the weight of the iPad has been a high priority with Apple, I think you have an excellent point. The weight increase with the 6s can be felt, but it's not a big deal. With a 3D Touch-equipped Air 3 it probably would be a big deal, at least with the version of 3D Touch currently available and would be seen by many as a step backward. So it will probably be an A9 or A9X (I'm guessing A9 to keep the A9X exclusive to the new iPad flagship, the iPad Pro), upgraded FaceTime camera and maybe pencil support.

Then it'd probably be better for you if you just turned it off.

You mean the iPad Pro that ALSO doesn't have 3D Touch?
Go troll somewhere else.

It has a pressure sensitive pen. That's what people want to do with 3D Touch also. Not having the exact same feature is irrelevant in this case.

Did you think people would rush out for the next iPad just to peek and pop?

You go and troll somewhere else bruh.

The problem I had initially was when I wanted to move app icons around, I found myself force touching the display. Previously a long, hard press didn't matter because all my phone would know is the long press. Now, it understands it's a force press and responds to it.

I might. But I do find some of the 3D Touch functions semi-useful, though. I just need to decide whether they are useful enough to put up with the annoyance of invoking the wrong action, and having to try multiple times before getting the right one.

Yes, exactly. My problem seems to be that I can't do a hard press without also making it a long press. I have the same problem when interacting with the Apple Watch, where it takes me a long time to get the watch to register a force touch, because I can't seem to do a quick hard press -- I need to put my thumb down and sort of gradually increase pressure to get it to register a force touch. As for the long press, I suppose I could train myself to not put pressure when I long press, but like you say, for eight years, it didn't matter if we put pressure on it when we did a long press, so I've got eight years of muscle memory working against me. :(

A spring release of an iPad Air 3 together with Apple Pencil would make me upgrade my iPad. My current iPad 3 is too slow already, but I'd also like to get the Apple Pencil together with something little more portable and less expensive than the iPad Pro.

iPad Air 3 to 4 = iPad 3 to 4?

Glassed Silver:mac
Care to elaborate?

The iPad 3's A5x processor was inadequate for powering that Retina display. The iPad Air 2 is already quite overpowered. What can they do to the iPad Air 3 to gimp it, barring an unexpected increase to the resolution?

Even if the specs remain unchanged, it's still overkill for the majority of use cases today.

I guess it all depends on the issues Apple is having and when this will be ready for production. I would prefer Apple just drop the price on the Air 2 and release an Air 3 in the fall. But if 3D Touch won't be ready until 2017 I'm not sure Apple can go another year with no Air update.

To me an Air 3 with just a spec bumb would be a bit like the mini 3 and so I hope Apple doesn't do it. But if 3D Touch for iPads is a year or two away from being production ready then Apple may have to update the Air even if it's just a spec bump. Going 3 years without an update would be too long IMO and I can't see Apple bringing the Pencil to the Air if they're working on different technology that would support both Pencil and 3D Touch. I think Apple needed to get the iPad Pro out there and get people developing for it and that's why it launched even though 3D Touch support for it wasn't ready.

The main point of this rumor is that the next gen iPad won't support 3D Touch. And unlike the iPhone, it's not been clear when the Air will be refreshed, so any credible rumors about its release are worth reporting. Also, are you suggesting that if MacRumors gets a credible tip on the iPhone 7's release date, even though we're all 99% it's September, that they not report it because it's too "captain obvious" for you?

Some people will find something to complain about no matter what. If it's not newsworthy to you don't click on it. If you don't want MacRumors to be MacRumors, visit another site.
Haha, Please relax, I should have used the /sarcasm tag because I was poking fun. I've been coming here for a few years more than you so apparently, I'm either hooked or just like the comments ;) /sarcasm
P.S. We all know that the next iPhone is launching next year along with the iPad 3. The 3D touch was worth mentioning but the additional information was superfluous and quite obvious to both of us.

Off topic...

I've always thought the default placement of the camera icon on the home screen to be really poor. The speed of the new fingerprint sensor renders useless the quick access to the camera from the lock screen. After that the ergonomics are too hard to get to the camera quickly.

I guess you can always move the icon...but still.
