I use exactly 0MB of my ATV's Hard Drive.

Same here. As soon as Apple releases newer Apple TVs, I plan to buy one of the countless devices listed on Craigslist for cheap. A larger hard drive is useless to me on the Apple TV.

The Loop reports that "very reliable sources" are claiming that there will be no update to the Apple TV at next Wednesday's media event in San Francisco.Research analyst Gene Munster noted yesterday that the shipping date for Apple's 40 GB Apple TV had slipped to 1-2 weeks, leading Munster to speculate that Apple could be introducing a revamped lineup for the device next week.

In reality it probably just means that 40gb hdd stock is hard to come by, and this shipping delay has happened before while Apple waits until the very last second to make an order (as to take greatest advantage of wholesale pricing) on what is essentially becoming an obsolete hdd size.

I bet they're running short of 40GB drives

It's pretty hard to find 40GB drives these days. It'd almost certainly be cheaper for them to use a larger capacity mass-market drive, but Apple do like to stick by their specs :)

Edit: strange how that happens, but previous poster said exactly the same thing. Sorry about the duplication...

apple has seemingly mastered the art of misinformation. they leak what they want, when they want. if they want you to know about a product to build hype then you'll find out about it. if they don't want you to know about it, you won't.

oh and i like my appleTV, works great HDMI splitter to my 42" flat screen and my 1080 projector, 109" screen.

I was really getting excited for a refresh...I think this is one of the most disappointing rumors I have seen. Hopefully, loop is wrong.

A larger hard drive is helpful because many of us have recently experienced the persistent problem of iTunes dropping our AppleTVs, sometimes even mid-viewing, for no apparent reason, regardless of whether the streaming is occurring wirelessly or via Ethernet cable. No one has been able to find a reliable solution to this problem and Apple has been completely unhelpful. As this never occurs with material synced to the AppleTV's hard drive, a larger hard drive is beneficial.

+1.

All I want to know is, how do I get a job as a business analyst? All I'd need to do is wait for another analyst to release some "news" and then release my own report stating the exact opposite. Sure, I'd probably be wrong half the time, but I'm sure I'd rake in enough cash to make me happy in the process.

It doesn't particularly need a faster cpu or gpu and it already has N networking.

It can't handle very high bitrate H.264.
It can't output 1080p.

So yes, it does need faster hardware ... or better dedicated hardware.

In addition, it needs to severely cost-reduce the hardware it is using, in particular the combination of Intel CPU, Intel chipset, and NVIDIA graphics. Sure, they're all low-end components, possibly $20 each, but it all adds up. A single ARM SoC can replace them all these days. It just depends on whether Apple want to use the Samsung SoC used in the iPhone (at its full rated speed), or wait for the PA Semi über-ARM SoC they're developing themselves. This rumour suggests the latter.

I am hopefull of a new :apple:TV at the event next week.
iTunes 9 and SL and Quicktime X are paving the way for an hardware and software update for :apple:TV.

1080p
USB support for external storage or iTunes Media Server
connectivity with AEBS/TC
Faster and more powerful processors
and more codec support

I guess, I can always dream, right? :)

I like the Mac Mini as alternative, I just feel it's too overkill for what I want. Simple playback of movies, photos and music.

Makes no sense. Apple tv is a dinosaur and a small hobbiest sales item. Add dvr, hdmi ( even my computer monitor glossy 24" has HDMI), a tuner and it will sell, otherwise as the networks steam more and more ala FX, pple tv goes the way of the cube.

Noo! I don't want DVR. Or a Tuner. Or Bluray. I want media from either my computer or the internet to play on my TV. For this ATV is great. It could be a lot better. But it is still great.

Also, it has HDMI, what are you talking about?

I don't like all this complaining about ATV's lack of old technologies. It can't record TV. It can't change the channels for me. It can't play DVDs or Bluray. ATV has nothing to do with broadcast TV or cable or physical media. It is for playing media files and streaming things off the internet. The problem is that Apple has fallen far short of revolutionizing the TV and Movie markets the way it did for music.
No more physical media! No more cable! Internet only!

I was all ready to move my :apple:TV to the bedroom and replace the living room spot with a fancy new :apple:TV. I guess I'll put my wallet away (even though it wasn't totally out in the first place).

Honestly, I am disappointed about this report. However, when it comes to this, it is really hard to predict the direction Apple will take. They might announce it, they might not. However, whenever Apple introduces something new, it is an exciting time.

Here are my official predictions:
10 minutes of stats regarding Mac, iPhone, iPod, iTunes
New iPod Classic
-Same price
-Bigger Drive (hint, the same larger drive will be in the Macbook Air soon)
-Camera
-HD Video output
-maybe adopting the larger vertical format of the Nano
New Nano
-Same prices
-bigger capacities
-Camera
-HD Video Output
-same colors
New iPod Touch
-Same Prices
-Bigger Capacities
-Camera
-GPS
-HD Video Output

Apple TV 3.0... Surely!

Apple needs to update soon, surely. Not sure why there is all the fuss about storage, my :apple:tv streams like a dream. Just sync photos and stream the rest of your content from your mac.

Not surprised

I, for one, don't think the ATV needs a hardware refresh anyway. I think it is an all around great product as-is and don't really crave any additional features.

As for storage space on the ATV itself, I stream everything from my iTunes library, so the first 40 gb of the device fill up and everything after that just streams from an external drive connected to my iMac. I have over 200 movies+tv shows, and this set-up is absolutely fabulous. No complaints at all.

I think we will se an updated Apple TV. There's a lot of talk that the event will just be about the iPod, iTunes, Music and Movie/TV Shows, which I agree.... But the Apple TV works with iTunes, it plays Music, Movies and TV shows so it would make sense for it to be linked to this event.

If nothing else, the speed performance of the menu system needs a giant boost (ie, more processor speed and better graphics card).

I'm happy streaming, but you're right, the link to iTunes is very fragile... It's become worse since i've upgraded to SL and use the "wake on demand" feature... It works fine most of the time but at least once a day AppleTV completely looses iTunes (and visa versa) and i have to close iTunes down and restart it to get it to find it again... I love my AppleTV but apple are not making it easy for me... They need to either 1) make the link to iTunes ROCK SOLID or 2) give me the option to upgrade the storage in my ATV by either enabling the USB port for external drives or (preferably) allow ATV to connect to network drives.... I've said it before; they need to sort out the software on ATV before they consider upgrading the hardware!! :-(

What really needs to happen is the removal of DRM from iTunes video content. Right now, it is what keeps me from using it. I already have an XBOX 360, but if I could watch shows from iTunes on it (ala Rivet or Connect 360) then I would totally use the iTunes Store. It plays other content great. I already watch podcasts this way and it's great - and they are free. I'd pay for the shows from iTunes if they ditch the DRM. It really doesn't matter to me what happens to the AppleTV...I'll never buy one. It's a one trick pony and while the trick is slick, it really ain't that impressive.
