I, for one, don't think the ATV needs a hardware refresh anyway. I think it is an all around great product as-is and don't really crave any additional features.

As for storage space on the ATV itself, I stream everything from my iTunes library, so the first 40 gb of the device fill up and everything after that just streams from an external drive connected to my iMac. I have over 200 movies+tv shows, and this set-up is absolutely fabulous. No complaints at all.

I agree to some extent but more storage is always nice. The main problem of the Apple TV has never been hardware but software. The Apple TV needs the App Store and movie/TV show subscriptions along with the option of watching some shows/channels for free with commercials. Apple should be trying to replace the cable box and not strengthening them by adding a Dvr as some have requested.

Here are my official predictions:

10 minutes of stats regarding Mac, iPhone, iPod, iTunes
New iPod Classic
-Same price
-Bigger Drive (hint, the same larger drive will be in the Macbook Air soon)
-Camera
-HD Video output
-maybe adopting the larger vertical format of the Nano
New Nano
-Same prices
-bigger capacities
-Camera
-HD Video Output
-same colors
New iPod Touch
-Same Prices
-Bigger Capacities
-Camera
-GPS
-HD Video Output

We will see the iPod Classic EOL'd. They reduced it's size last time. Now it will be gone. Don't expect it to be around after the 9th.

No GPS in the iPod Touch.

HD video from the Nano and iPod Touch? Maybe. But only with Apple's special HD cable ;)

Every time there's a series of reports like this, I think, "Gee, sure am glad I got a Mini instead."

You will never see a DVR branded from Apple. It will never happen. That is not their model. You purchase and download from iTunes. None of that silly "recording" technology...that's sooo last century. :)

More to the point, Apple don't seem to like having different versions of things for different markets. A tuner-less DVR is near pointless, and tuners create way too many SKUs.

Gene Munster seems to like to see his name in print ... he is historically wrong.

Here he is - spouting some inaccurate **** on TV as usual

A larger hard drive is helpful because many of us have recently experienced the persistent problem of iTunes dropping our AppleTVs, sometimes even mid-viewing, for no apparent reason, regardless of whether the streaming is occurring wirelessly or via Ethernet cable.

To address that problem the HD only needs to be large enough to buffer the video that is being watched. a 5GB drive would be more than large enough for that.

People have suggested that a few GB of flash RAM would be enough but the problem with that is that it has a limited lifetime of only so many writes. So it is not the best for a buffer. I think Aple did the right thing by using the lowest price HD available.

That said, what Apple could make, and I think it would even sell is a "media server" that would hold a large library and make it available to all the devices you might own, like an ATV, iPhone or computer. People typicaly today own many viewing screens and would like to have the library available on all of those screens. This device would really need an external firewire port or internal space for several drives

I also agree with the last few comments about the Apple TV not needing a larger HD. Lots of people complaining about the HD space are people who don't own an ATV and don't have any experience with it (although the HD may be the reason why they don't own one to begin with?) Anyway, I think the best solution that would please everyone would be to allow usage of the USB port or networked drives.

As for a hardware upgrade, it would be nice, but not necessary. I have a 1080p TV with a blu-ray player and it looks amazing. But seriously, how much 1080p content do you guys really have? Your internet connections must be a lot faster than mine... On the other hand, the current hardware is outdated.

I'm happy with the current quality of the content available via iTunes (Revision3 anyone?) and my own collection. But if Apple could freshen up the OS a bit, drop the price, add some ipod/iphone integration, or run some ads, we could see a large bump in sales. And once there's a large enough ATV user base, that's when Apple will roll out an app store and more content than we could ever ask for.

Finally, this rumor about no Apple TV refresh next week, I don't need a refresh. However, a software update would be great.

I think we could still see an update for several reasons:

- There was not a sudden surge of people buying :apple:TV recently, so the shortages are a little wierd
- The event is a music event, but on apples site, the :apple:TV is listed under iPod+iTunes, so it is not out of possibility that they will announce a refresh at a music event
- There have been no hardware changes in 2+ years which means apple either needs to update it, or abandon it. 2 years of no changes is too long with how fast technology advances.

Apple TV has so much potential, which is just not realized!

More capacity and external disk support is a must for me. I don't want my computer on all the time to stream and although I may be able to scrape some money together to get one (or get a generous gift!) some of us can't afford a nice N router on top of that.

Another flaw is a lack of codecs, I don't have that many videos but most are avi or divx. I guess many others are in a similar situation.

I love the idea of Apple TV, please make my reasonable expectations a reality!

I was in walmart last week and they have a linksys wireless N router for $49

That's the real problem. Allowing other services on it as well as iTunes is the best way to realize the potential. Keeping it locked down is going to kill it.
well apple will NEVER open it up. They designed the ATV to be used with iTunes. If they opened it up to Boxee, Hulu, etc. people would have no reason to pay for shows and some movies on iTunes. By keeping it closed, they are forcing people to use and purchase media through iTunes, which makes apple money!

apple tv - 40GB- $229 - plays stuff from my mac... which I could do my just connecting my mac to my tv anyways.

playstation 3 - 120GB - $299. Plays video games, blu-ray, dvd, cd, divx, xvid, wifi, bluetooth, can stream media from your mac (music, videos, photos), has a web browser and 1080p hdmi output.

seriously, why would anybody buy an apple tv?

I was kind of hoping for an update as it is one of the only apple products I haven’t owned over the years,

But it seems silly to buy one that is, well so out of date.

As for its all about rock and roll, given' the iTunes store sells music videos etc surely then could uses this to promote :apple:TV.

Maybe let it replace using airport express so you can hook it up for streaming music was well as TV to your hi-fi system.

I agree with you (right now). But a lot of us bought the apple tv when the PS3 was $600. You're right though. Apple needs to step up and do something to make the ATV more attractive or it will fail. Lower price? Add features?

Interesting thing with the AppleTV, if they had implemented commonly used codecs and stuff, especially for video, they would have sold sh*tloads.

But they don't want to do that. Apple knows people want codec support, but apple would rather you buy content from iTunes, so they are going to cripple the device. You also have to think that the majority of people still don't really know much about computers. Some people can only use word and access the internet, these are the kinds of people Apple is targeting. The apple tv is not meant to be used by nerdy gadget lovers who want to do all sorts of fancy ripping and streaming of hd content. I would say that at least 85% of computer owners wouldn't even understand how to convert between different codecs, so they aren't going to be ripping and playing their own dvds.
