Or just purchase the black sport band separately along with one of the silver aluminum Sport models.

This is what I'm planning to do. I like silver/black band combo the best, and if 3rd party bands are released, more of them will match with the silver watch imo.

I think this is a typical Apple up selling scam. Lots and lots of people would choose this option including myself. Once you add the 50$ for the Second one in black you get much closer to the SS with the black strap and start thinking if this extra is worth it and plenty then will end up with the SS with the black strap even so they would have been perfectly fine with the sports plus black band.

guess i'll buy the blue then add the black band.

Guess me too.

Still cannot figure out why there is no choice for black band on the Sport watch with the silver casing. Just bothers me that they purposefully seem to be doing it to sell separate black bands. There is not a single band color I'd be interested in. So it is either buy the gray case or have to spend an extra $50 on a band.

Do the color choices tend to favor women? Color palate just seems overall tiled toward the feminine with pink, light green, light blue and white - not even darker blue. Just doesn't seem like they would appeal to many men - some, sure but most or all? Am I wrong?

I'm with you. These colors they've been using lately (iPod Touch, iPhone 5C, iPhone 6/6+ silicone cases, and now Sport band) are absolutely hideous. They look like faded crap and even if I were a female, I still wouldn't choose any of those colors. Black or white are the only ones I would consider. Remember how vibrant the colors were on the 4th-gen iPod Nano? If you don't, please do a quick Google image search. They were totally awesome and I can't believe that someone at Apple feels that the current color palette is more appealing to the masses.

I don't think Apple would produce these many options for the Sport band but, with the exception of purple and pink, I would've been happy to wear any of these colors. Especially orange and green! They didn't even produce a Product Red band. I think that color looks great on the silicone iPhone 6/6+ case. They could've at least done that for the bands but for some reason they chose not to.

So this is kind of a shady move by Apple, right? If they only sold the watches and bands bundled together I could almost see a point to this beyond simply gouging us. But since the bands are also sold individually what other reasoning could there be?

Since when is it shady to sell a watch bundled with a band? Have you ever heard of a wristwatch sold without a band?

The only "shady" aspect of it is not selling the Space Black SS with cheaper straps, but then again they aren't making available truly compatible bands (with Space Black accents) for it. That might change in the future when they release more bands (rumor has it that they'll debut three additional bands in the fall).

As I said, it wouldn't seem as "shady" if they ONLY sold them in bundles. But you can buy the bands separately if you so choose. It seems odd to restrict the choice of bands for the silver aluminum sport watch simply based on the color.

Edit: I do see what you mean though about the band not matching exactly. However the black non-space gray band is pretty darn close to matching.

True, one can always purchase the black sport band (with silver pin) separately for $49 and ebay the colored band that comes with the silver aluminum models to recoup some of that cost.

I think the point I, and a lot of other people have, is why make us do that? If there are supposedly a bajillion combinations and personalizations with this watch why restrict this one?

Most likely to upsell people to the SS model with the black strap if they didn't know any better. They didn't make a black version of the iPhone 5c either, as they had the iPhone 5s if they wanted a black front. Fortunately, it's easy enough to purchase a separate strap for $49 so no biggie.

All these people buying these and discarding the bands is going to clutter up Ebay with cheap OEM bands.

Silver aluminum looks best with the black band. I'm going to order a white + silver aluminum and then buy the black band separately.

This is the exact reason why they did this. Since they don't offer what many of us want, (the silver aluminum sport case with the black sports band), I think they are hoping to get us to pay the extra $50 to get the black band.

Would be curious to know if Apple has a real reason for doing this. Seems contrary to the "personalization" approach that Apple has taken with this product. Also seems contrary to an approach focused on making as many people pull the trigger as easily as possible and have them feel good about it. I may end up paying the $50 and getting the black band if I really prefer the silver finish to the grey finish but I will definitely feel jerked around about it.....just not the taste that I have ever thought Apple wants to leave in their customers mouth so to speak - particularly when rolling out a new product. It is far more important for Apple (at least in my novice opinion) to do whatever they can to make the buying decision easy and get the most traction than to try to extort another $50 out of customers who are pissed about spending it.

Has anyone noticed anything in the "press" picking up on this gap? I wonder if Apple has received any feedback on this.

I spoke with an Apple Store rep about this, and she said she saw no reason for Apple doing this, besides trying to squeeze out a little more money.

Is it just me, or do any of you think the sport with the black band is going to sell out in 5 minutes?

Don't know what people like, but there seems to be an something that could jam things up here.

Nobody is crying here, but before we make decisions, we like to ask questions. If you have a problem with that, like you seem to do, you don't have to be in this thread, you can definitively leave.

Let's revisit:

No black band option for silver alum...

Your post quoted me, but whatever.

And the can sell a special edition silver with black band when sales start to lag.

So apple says its super customizable, but then makes you pay $50 if you want a certain combo? Or trying to make people upgrade to the SS.

The same way apple made the iPhone 6 start at 16gb and make the next model 64gb to entice people.

Customizable doesn't mean you pay the same price for whatever model you want, including the Edition models.
