Nobody should be surprised. Apple has meticulous QA that always prevents faults like this from reaching consumers. This is another reason why I love Apple. They always put product perfection ahead of shipping x number of units to meet initial demand. Yes there may be shortages for the time being, but the assurance you are getting a world class product should make those delays more palatable.

Not sure if that is sarcasm... Apple has been notorious for Rev A hardware troubles. Mac mini graphics issues, iMac motherboard problems, Macbook Pro retina display issues, Macbook Pro 2009 SATA interface issues...

That said, if the watch has some benefit to you, this is a palatable story regarding delay. They are taking the time to try and ensure they get this one right.
 
Tell that to my Retina iMac's display that is delaminating its anti-reflective coating and I've never even touched or cleaned the display and it's still falling apart.

1. That has nothing to do with the current issue.

2. NO product, I repeat NO product, will be perfect, no matter how much testing is done. If you expect that, you need to be living on a different planet. Sheesh!

4. (inferring from my ME/QE Experience) They go through their Manufacturing Execution System to not ship the potential defective ones.

Are those examples all really "Rev A" hardware? I guess you can call any update "Rev A" but it loses meaning if you apply it too broadly. I think a product has to be a new line or a significant change in form-factor to be considered a true rev A.

So, e.g., the first iPhone and iPad. The first desk-lamp iMac, the first probably the first unibody laptop. Conversely, I wouldn't count the Retina iMac. It's same form factor as the regular 27", with mostly the same design constraints, similar components, etc. Not to minimize Apple's accomplishment, but it's not all new by any stretch -- just new in one specific way.

Since it's a custom order for a full spec model and I'm from Africa a swop under warranty is not going to happen either, so I'm just living with it because I have no choice as I cannot wait for it to be shipped to Apple first for repair or replacement.

Hmm..maybe stores are different in Africa then in the states. I have a custom iMac that had issues about 6 months into ownership. I took a picture and sent it in to AppleCare. They had me take it to my local store. The store re-imaged the hdd on to a new model and had me out the door with a brand new iMac in 1 hr.


I also had delamination on a 24in Cinema Display and the store gave me another brand new display when I brought it in.
The issue has came back but the display is now almost 7 yrs old so it's held up better then most displays I've had in the past.
 
I know, right? I saw that and thought...the waiting line is a hell of a lot longer than that!

I think it meant to refer to "several styles" as some of the styles of watch aren't really shipping and/or are shipping slowly.

The SS Link, the Black SS Link, the SS Modern Buckle, the SS Leather loop... etc.

The SG Sport is slow to ship.

The 42mm SS w/Black Sport band (and most of the 42mm in general) ship very slowly, too.

Gruber said on a podcast that he wished the taps were stronger.

I was expecting a whole new notification experience. The "taps" are just vibrations, just like my phone, and they are barely noticeable. I have missed calls and messages alike because of this. I am not really sure what the "prominent haptic" is supposed to do, but i've noticed no difference at all.

Have you reached out to Apple? I would not be surprised if you politely escalated your complaint with their AppleCare phone support - them sending you an advance replacement, you can restore the data on your original one to the new one, and then mail yours back.

They've done it before and it sounds like you are in a perfect situation to be helped by their creative problem solving.

Other companies change their products so often, they will never ship anything that isn't Rev A.

world class product? I'm picking myself up from the floor after falling backwards laughing. Great products, premium price, but what about bothering to test them before boxing them up and shipping them out?

If this watch was a $59.95 cheapie, yeah sure, but I would have expected that paying $579 Australian for a 42mm SG BSB watch would see somebody at the factory end test them before packing and sending them.

Received a faulty Apple watch yesterday, a week prior a friend of mine in Melbourne had exactly the same experience. Anybody who believes Apple has awesome quality control is deluding themselves.

This is why I don't by Gen. 1 products.

Of course, if Gen 2 is a significant change, it will be "Gen 1" of its particular iteration with potential issues on whatever the revamped hardware or software features are. And if there isn't a significant change, people will cry bloody murder for that as well (and resolve to wait until Gen 3 :) )
