Hey, I’m an XPS 13 user too. I love it!

I’ve been using touchscreen laptops pretty much since they became a thing with the launch of Windows 8. I appreciate the functionality very much. That being said, I use the touchpad/mouse like 95% of the time.

Anyway, I just find it funny that Apple is against touchscreen laptops but won’t allow for mouse support on a touchscreen device that they are trying to market as a laptop substitute.
Funny strange, not funny ha ha :) It really is weird. Apple gets these ideas in their collective head and will just not let go! Surface Pro has mouse. Chromebook has mouse. When will Apple get it? I am amazed that we have an iPhone bigger than 4 freaking inches! Funny how THAT changed.

Inversely, this thread is "I need this feature, therefore everybody needs it". We run hundreds of iPad Pro's in the field with sales guys, and they have 0 need for a file system. With the apps we have developed, this has become their "computer". Different strokes for different folks.

WOW 100's!?! I guess i should quit my job and join your workforce and take Chic Filet orders at the drive through

Im having a hard time understanding why. Do you mean because of that extra distance added by the trackpad?

This is exactly my point. For years Apple and many Apple fans have been saying that reaching to touch the screen in the second pic is uncomfortable for users, and now we have the first pic.

Wait for people to come here to tell you why iPad is a real computer because they can run Photoshop and few apps that they are using on daily basis.

no it's a 'real computer' because it as a logic board, GPU, ram etc. its not just a computer running an OS that works for what some folks do. same as the whole Mac V Windows V Unix debate. use the system that works for you

I agree 100%.
As a content creator and not just a consumer — I need to organise my files. That's how I roll, that's my workflow.

.

cool for you. use a desktop or a notebook computer with an OS that allows you to sort and folder etc to your wee hearts content. I am one of the content creators that doesn't need to see my files in such ways. Although it would be nice for all files to be in a single common bucket so all apps can see them, save to one file etc. I find the whole importing/exporting thing to be annoying. especially when I want to work on a single item in many apps.
[doublepost=1541038290][/doublepost]
"It does everything I need, therefore it's suitable for everyone". A variation on "I don't need this feature, therefore nobody needs it". I see that far too often on these forums :(

and I see "it doesn't do what I need the way I want it to so it totally sucks for everyone" as much.
[doublepost=1541038369][/doublepost]
Isn’t it funny how the iPad is supposed to be a “computer” but the simplest way to manage content on it is by connecting to a real computer and using a desktop application?

no, the simplest way to manage media is via cloud systems. it's also the simplest way to back up your stuff. and yes there are some adjustments that could be made that would make that system work even better
[doublepost=1541038508][/doublepost]
Why are you all complaining about this after a hardware event? Did you expect them to announce Finder/Terminal/etc for iOS? iPads work for some and not for others. Don't like Photoshop on an iPad? Then just use a laptop/desktop.

careful there, using logic to make an argument isn't allowed here.

They even kind of admit it's needed and allow the virtual keyboard to act as a track pad.

I did not know that. Interesting. I have an older air 1 and only use it for travel for Netflix. I was hoping beyond hope that the new one would have mouse support.

I’m also an attorney with MBP and iPad Pro, a PRC one though. The lack of file system on iOS makes it impossible for attorneys to use iPad Pro as a work computer, but still iPad Pro is an amazing device for reading PDF file at A4 size and taking quick note.

I’m an attorney and I find the IPP works just fine for serious work. My documents are stored in the cloud and I have a file system there. I don’t need a file system on the device itself.

I thik apple markets the iPad to kids/older folks as the sole computer, and the rest of us as a companion.
I wouldn't be able to explain file handling on an iPad to my parents if I tried. It all just seems super confusing and inconsistent to me, especially if you're not interested in storing everything in the cloud.

But why would you need to explain it to them?

Because they ask xD my dad only does the simplest tasks on his iPad. Most of what he does on his computer can be done on the iPad, but some people just arent tech oriented to change what they know. He just knows it on the PC (and he still often needs help with certain things there). Also they dont watch they keynotes or read up on the changes with the updates. My mom is more in touch with tech, but she was asking how to get notification center on her ipad since there was nothing that told her the gesture changed after updating.

Apple responds to market pressure... particularly when the competition makes inroads in marketshare. Apple was completely against 7" tablets, until... 7" Android tablets began to grow in sales. THEN Apple came out with the Mini. Android tablets are pretty much dead now, and the result... the iPad Mini languishes because there's no need to compete anymore.

Apple was completely against phablets, until... Android phablet sales took off like a rocket. Now Apple is all-in and only-in phablets.

Android has always supported mice/trackpads. Heck, I was using a mouse on my jailbroken iPad 1 back-in-the-day.

There are even some apps today, like Jump Desktop, that support bluetooth mice on the latest version of iOS and iPads. Granted, only 2 mice are supported, but it works wonderfully.

Will Apple provide support for mice/trackpads on iOS? Most likely not, unless... Chrome OS tablets rise in popularity and profitability. My Pixelbook is filling the niche that I had been hoping would be filled by the iPad Pro. But I'm currently the lone odd-ball so if Chrome OS tablets are going to sell enough for Apple to take notice and respond, it's going to be a while... quite a while.

Yes, and I would go so far as to say that the Surface Pro 6 is big competition for productivity to the iPad. Because Apple waits so long, I may be forced to a Surface Pro 6. I am going to look at one this weekend.

Without a doubt the Surface Pro is stiff competition for productivity. Previously, the higher prices on the Surface Pro have kept it from having a favorable comparison. But with the new Pros and prices, the landscape have shifted a bit.

As a SP4 user, I have a hard time seeing these two devices in the same class. The Surface Pro is effectively a laptop that you can use a tablet, where the IPP is a tablet you can use as a laptop. This makes the experience of each very different from each other, though they’re moving closer together.

Also, even out of the box, the SP4 never got more than 4 hours of battery, and if left turned off with a full battery, it’s dead in a weekend. I had two of them and they were both like this. I have it through work; I don’t think I’d ever pay money for one given the experience I’ve had. I sure hope the SP6 is a huge improvement.

I agree. My iPad file system is Dropbox, which has a pretty good app. I don't need anything more.

What I wish, though, was the ability to copy files to and from a USB drive. I don't need it often, but sometimes people still give me files on USB drive.

I am going to look closely at one. I use it mostly for Netflix when traveling and MIGHT need to do some work that would require a mouse. Not a full workload by any means, but if it suits my individual needs I will consider the Surface Pro 6. Kind of bummed I just bought a sweet Lenovo 14 inch HD full blown laptop. Used it once. Kind of sort of :)

I think you missed my poiny. Why would they ask “wheres the file system?” Most apps make it pretty straightforward

Really struggle to understand this lack of a file system argument. You can put everything together neatly on Files app or use a 3rd party one such as Readdle documents app. You also have shelf apps to temporary store documents needed for documents or projects. I have everything organised in folders and it keeps up to date in one single place across all my devices. The file system on a MacBook is a mess and takes a lot of time to organise with files all over the place and is very disorganised. Take the desktop for example and Apple needing to implement stacking. So for me, it is a non-issue. However, if it is for you then that is obviously going to be a deal breaker, especially when not connected to the world wide web. You can though download and hold locally documents.

The SP6 now has a quad core, and an i5 fanless model makes it even more so. The new iPad design looks just like the Surface Pro, minus the kickstand and way better speakers. Surface pro still has the headphone jack and full IO; however it doesn’t have USB C and it’s battery life is about 3 hours shorter.

The funny part, is the 256GB SP6 is now cheaper than the 12.9 iPad Pro 256 with sales for 150-200 off. They just had one this weekend that you could purchase a SP6 256 for 1099.

This. People just need to be more open minded. Yes the "full" OSes are full, but they've also been refined over and over for decades. iOS (specifically the iPad version) is still new, but I think it is the future. iOS 13 is going to make that future a lot more clear if the rumors are anything to go by.

For me the problem is that the system decides where to download the files. That's not what I want. I want to be able to decide how to store my files locally on my iPad. I don't want to use cloud file services as I want to be able to use the iPad in cases where I don't have Internet.

I dislike the fact that every photo that I download is stored in Photos and then backed up on Google. I don't need this. I work on digital art projects. I want folder for each project and I want to put the pictures I download in those folders. Overall the photos management is the worst for me. I can't control the folders I could have and the one the system creates are not useful for me.

Overall my problem with iOS is that it decides things for me and then it takes me a lot of time to workaround this. Systems that try to think for me never work out. I am not a mainstream users and this is definitely not what I want.

I want to be able to open the same file with different apps. That's something I can't do currently. I have no option to decide which app I can use to open certain file which is what I need too. Sometimes I would want to edit presentation in Powerpoint, other cases in Keynote for example. Or I would want to open photo in different apps based on my needs.

Oh well that still stands. When my dad saves pictures from the web, he doesnt know where they go. He sees the "save" option, but he doesnt pay attention to where it saves, files vs photos. And I keep explaining it, but it doesnt seem to stick. To be fair, he still has trouble on windows with this too... Saving to the default "save" location and not being able to find it afterwards.
