I was 100% for the iphone, and I'm still may get it. I wanted the iPhone for the internet and app development. Without flash and no real SDK, my reasons for wanting the phone have gone down.

To bad Palm did a head butt inversion too.

Its a ****ING phone, there NEEDS to be games!!!!!!!!

Thats kinda sad. To be considered a phone you need games? I thought phones were for calling.

I guess that thing plugged into the wall next to me isnt a phone. To bad, I was planning on calling grandma on it later.

Is this even official? I thought they had the flash showing on the home page of the new york times during the demo.

Sorry to say, you are wrong. Browsers support flash. Flash is a product offered by adobe that browser's embed. Flash is not the internet. True, they are taking away elements key websites use. What that commercial is saying though is that the phone is built to view REAL WEBPAGES, not MOBILE VERSIONS. The addition of Flash is just a browser advantage. So the iPhone has a crappy browser? Maybe. But at least it can view REAL WEBPAGES. Dont believe me? check out http://mobile.macrumors.com ...thats what other phones see.

Sure it may render better, but Flash is still a large part of the internet, and you can really say that your device supports the "full" internet with out flash support, whether it's a pluging or not.

sorry, have to disagree. my cheap ppc see's the real macrumors site, and also, full featured flash pages, that the iphone wont even load up, because it doesnt support flash. so all mobiles don't show what mobile.macrumors.com is showing. i really cant believe the disappointments apple has given me today. even their stocks reflect it.

If you are talking about the Keynote in January, no. It was acually showing that is was missing the flash plug in. If you are talking about he ad's, I think I gave an answer to this...

This further's my argument that the images we are seeing for the iPhone ad's are composited. That flash on the NY Times page had to get there somehow... it there because the whole page is fake, it was not what was really on the screen. We have never seen a working iPhone show flash content. Of course, the October 2nd date proved this too. Thats beside the point though.

For $600... yeah, it sure as hell better do games

Even the iPod has 3rd party games.

If I pay 600 dollars for a phone, I want it to do more then my current samsung 20 dollar phone. This includes games. For 600 dollars, Apple needs to realize that phones don't only call anymore, they now act like a Garmin, have GPS, 2+ MP Camera, have more then 11 pieces of software, picture messaging and more. The only thing new is really the multi-touch.

If I pay 600, I want my Nike+ to work with the device that is "going to replace my nano." I also want my radio to work with it. For 600, it should have video out, if my $250 iPod can do it, it should also. For 600, the iPhone should be damn near perfect, and apparently the device that's been "years in the making" isn't even close...

Don't give me that ****.

ditto, I kinda of expected the iphone to be underpromised no one will make what the consumer really wants, although apple does try to come close.

I was being sarcastic. I expect to play games on it too. You didnt say it like that though... you made it a requiremnt for phones.

I also find it hard to believe that people who have been hyping this great device for 6 months can now say the only functionality that is new is muti-touch. Didnt steve say it has over 200 patents in it? It also has a GUI that has yet to be rivaled; 6 months after it was shown off nobody has even attepted to show a response!

You know why this phone will stand against the competition? The software and hardware are beeing made by the same company. A company that focuses on Operating Software!

Why do I feel like I am the only one standing up for the iPhone anymore? So what... it lost a plug in they never told us it had! I am sure we will see it put back in at some point. Its a friggin plug in! It isnt that difficult to add! Adobe will probably be bugging them to put it in! It is one thing gone... suddenly multi-touch is the only new technology?

Sorry, sarcasm isn't easily noticable on the internet.

But seriously, what's worth the 600? No really, tell me, cause I don't know anymore.

Apple could have done SO much with this phone. iWork support, actual apps that are portable, like Garageband or iWeb, bluetooth syncing, previous accessories, more memory, iChat, photo booth, core animation, and much much more. And we're left with 11 apps, icluding "notes" and "SMS"

Grr..

Most of u see it as being a huge problem, its not just flash its no java, no sdk, no flash = no REAL INTERNET, to me its like having an ipod with no movies,tv shows, games, pictures, or contact list. Yes its a phone but its the other features that WAS going to make it better then any other phone like the ipod stands out from the horribile zune. Alot of people are saying its a phone its not meant to browse the net or play games. Thats false, nofthing is just a phone these days a metro pcs phone haves games/planner/mp3 play back the iphone WAS suppose to stand out and be the leader of the pack and offer us everything that we expected. Also the price is CRAZY this kind of reminds me of the ps3 vs xbox 360 I really dont know what to compare the iphone too in terms of celluar devices but something like the blackjack makes the iphone looks pretty bad, especially when you look at the price point. I am sure it will be cool hacks and tricks for the iphone but for the people that are not as savy as most of us here on mac rumors, its going to turn alot of heads and may dissapointe apple as fare as sells go. This would be a great time for any other company to come out with a phone using a better service (evdo for exaple) and bring everything to the table the iphone didnt and im sure they would have a simple victory.

P.S We will see

Full Internet....but with NO java and NO flash. Awesome. Makes sense.

This isn't a confirmed story.

I believe the iPhone is going to have flash. And if it doesn't at release, it will extremely soon after.

Jobs has said over and over, it's the full internet. He would know damn well it would be a mistake not to include flash.

whoa, now dont get me wrong, this is still a great phone. i'm sure all the software can be added, but why pay $600 and HOPE for it to come soon, and have a crippled phone until apple decides to release software? at least thats how i look at it. look how long the ipod has been out, and look at how many games it has. thats not a good sign of updates, and in reality is scary for the iphone. i'll buy it when its READY to be used like a $600 phone and has all the support i feel it should have, and i'm sure others feel like me. just like he said, what am i paying "$600" for again?

I agree, more could be done. Personally I would prefer a great piece of hardware with a solid operating software that is being built upon rather than waiting for the OS before I get the hardware. To answer your question, I would show you the original Keynote. The $600 is for 3 devices.

1) An all new iPod. A bigger screen with a new OS that runs on the best touch sensitive controls yet. Multiple sensors that make navigation easy. By turning the iPod you go into cover flow? That is cool!

2) A solid internet device. There still are few phones that do both cell and wifi internet. A device that can switch between the two is great. It is built around things like google maps. A touch sensitive device that is built to use google maps? All phones need this! It knows when you rotate the screen and turns the page to help! Plus, just touch elements to zoom in. Sure. No Java or Flash. I would bet its coming though.

3) A great phone. They looked at the phone and tried to figure out what is missing. Adding callers, viewing voicemail and getting to your contacts. Its all thought out. Other manufacturers dont really think about the experience when it comes to this. I always have problems with my phones OS's. It is hard to get to what I want.

If that does not do it... i'm sorry. This is a mobile mac. The integration with Mail, iPhoto, iCal and iTunes cannot be done with other phones. Get a Treo... you need to work to have it connect to your computer. Your phone should be the one working to try and get your inbox.

Hopefully this doesn't sound like spam. I just got really excited when I saw this.

Is this a dumb question?

Why not?

Seriously. What are they thinking? Are they trying to avoid some type of reliance on Adobe or -- ah, what?

I give you the same response people have been giving all along. You keep using your crappy phone while I enjoy all the other great things about the iPhone. You dont see what those great things are? Check my post above. (4 posts above this)

Flash for OS X sucks anyways. Adobe needs to sit down and optimize it. My fans always go crazy when I watch a YouTube video. The only other time I see Flash is in ads. Other than that, it's just pointless eye candy that is a waste of time to download, so Apple made the right decision to abandon it in the iPhone :)

This has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with economics.

Remember that Steve said prior to WWDC that third-party application development will be possible, but that applications will be essentially Dashboard widgets. What could you do with that functionality and Flash? V-O-I-P. It's the exact same reason that the iPhone uses SMS rather than iChat/AIM. The iPhone's features suck because Apple is pandering to the demands of AT&T and other wireless providers.

It may, however, be possible to send SMS/AIM messages via a third-party application, even without Flash.

On one hand there won't be any annoying flashing smiley face advertisements on the iPhone web.

On the other hand the iPhone should be an open platform so Adobe, or anyone else can build their own plugin.
