XM radio app. XM Skydock app for enjoying XMs commercial free music channels while in the car. :D

I could never get into Pandora really, but that's just me.

Nothing worth listening on FM these days anyway. Find a stable WiFi connection for 60 seconds and you can download a 2 hour podcast and be on your way.

As for music, you have Pandora.

They don't have a website or an app that streams the radio station that their games are on? You should check....

I listen to Toronto Maple Leafs games through the Corus Radio App, which streams AM 640. I've been doing that for over a year.
AOL radio has 97.1FM which is what I use to listen to Red Wings games.

gym

Come on! It is not completely useless and outdated. I go to the gym and they play whatever dumb satellite Top of the Pops station but they also have TV's but to hear them you have to tune into FM station. So now I have to bring my iphone AND my Sony Walkman cassette player (b/c that's the only thing that is portable with a FM receiver).

If the iPod has it, why can't they just put it in the iOS4 as well? I love Apple and all but I really don't want to have to buy a nano just to get FM. *sigh*

People still listen to FM?

of course ppl still listen to FM. The majority of ppl that drive on the roads have their FM radio on if they don't have a CD on. If you don't think the majority of ppl don't use FM you need to get your ass outside.

You guys are forgetting to mention the fact that your wireless carrier (hint: AT&T) may just suck horribly at streaming 3G data sometimes, and the FM radio is your best backup that should almost always work.

I listen to my iPhone or CD. FM radio is full of trash. Nothing worth listening to. (except maybe the sports and talk fans...which I am neither)

Yeah FM must be worthless if Apple isn't doing it.

I can't wait for them to get rid of USB on their MacBooks and watch all the fanboys try to hop in line with that one.

Not needed... even if you really want your favorite FM station and not a better alternative like satellite radio or pandora radio, you can get any local station from any state on the I Heart Radio app.

Seriously, FM and CDs are a thing of the past.

As was said before, intelligent life exists outside of the USA and those apps don't work overthere.

geez- I'm as much of a fanboy as they come but it really irritates me when "i wish xx feature was included in ________" is answered with;

"Why would you want xx? xx is clearly useless. xx is outdated and stupid"

The question is, if the capability is there, why not enable it?

AM/FM is all about commercials and making money these days. When they do play music, it's a secondary consideration and they only play music that will make them the most money. It's why so many stations are hits based and certain genres of music are in the shape they are in.

Why would you want to listen to FM when you have an iPod built into your phone. I would rather listen to my music collection than to listen to the same 20 songs played over and over with a bunch of commercials thrown in.

Nearly all radio stations broadcast online, and if that radio station doesn't have an app then chances are you can get one from a 3rd party that does support that stations stream.

Then you can listen to it on the go via WiFi if you got one of the tiny AT&T data plans but if you still have unlimited or something over 4gb or 5gb a month then stream away using 3G as you shouldn't be crossing that if your stream is the high quality and low bit rate (~50kb/s) ones

^THIS^ And I usually only like 5 out of the 20 they repeat over and over.

Could it have something to do with adding the FM feature would require an antenna or something that would increase the chance of interference with the phone ?

The other thing is maybe there isn't much demand for a FM receiver in a phone.

You don't need FM if you have Pandora. Actually, with an iPhone Pandora is taken to a whole new level, FM is unneeded.

one problem with that is Pandora can and will kill the battery a lot faster. Pandora required the cell antenna to be in a active mode. FM antenna just is a passive receiver. Longer battery life.

Plus some times local stations are nice to listen 2.

Exactly.

I have my own music so I don't have to listen to the crap that gets pumped out over FM. Load it up with hours and hours of your own music.

Well, it seems that some people just never use non-Apple approved devices/formats/applications :D

I don't even listen to the radio anymore because all I hear is commercials today, that's why I have an ipod with Aux input. :D

i'm not quite an engineer so i may be wrong here,

but if bluetooth antenna's send and receive data, and if they're capable of also sending and receiving FM radio.....

....why couldn't the antenna's be utilized to SEND FM radio, to my car radio for instance? I know there are accessories for that, but what if I have a case that doesn't allow for accessories to be easily plugged in (powermat case for example). That way, i can still plug in to charge (or, eventually, set it on the powermat car charger) and have my phone broadcast what i'm listening to on my FM radio.

any thoughts?

Doesn't the iPhone and iPod have some sort of FM Transmitter in them? Isn't this how the Nike+ devices work?

It might not be that powerful but feed it some juice and you got a beat going no?

btw not totally sure on the above... just remembering an article I read last year on this same thing.
