Not needed... even if you really want your favorite FM station and not a better alternative like satellite radio or pandora radio, you can get any local station from any state on the I Heart Radio app.

Seriously, FM and CDs are a thing of the past.

I just tried that app... not one local radio station was listed.

Personally I would like FM with the iPhone. It'd be nice to have locally influenced playlists, something that Pandora isn't smart enough to do. Also it's nice to have local stations because you get news and other info that Pandora, your iPod or other music sources can't give you. There are also some interesting radio DJ's, I guess some people here have never experienced that. Our local sports station is a really good example of that, the guys are hilarious.

I don't see the addition needed though since most of the time I'm around a radio anyways.

what about ootunes wunderradio, slacker, xtend, aol just trying to help I find internet radio much better

Nearly all radio stations broadcast online, and if that radio station doesn't have an app then chances are you can get one from a 3rd party that does support that stations stream.

Then you can listen to it on the go via WiFi if you got one of the tiny AT&T data plans but if you still have unlimited or something over 4gb or 5gb a month then stream away using 3G as you shouldn't be crossing that if your stream is the high quality and low bit rate (~50kb/s) ones

you guys just don't seem to get it, do you?

the iPhone is sold and used also OUTSIDE of the USA! I repeat, OUTSIDE of the USA, overseas! in other continents!

and in other countries, not everyone has the luxury of having their iPhone "connected" all the time with a data plan. So, Internet Radio is worthless unless your sitting in your house with wifi. and let's say some people DO have data plans, most of those apps won't allow you to play music, just because we're not in the USA. (i.e. Pandora)

so, FM Radio is the perfect solution for some people, including me... I like to hear new songs coming out, talk shows, joke shows, etc....

hope you understand now.

Because the iPhone can't be everything to everybody, and why invest dev $$ in declining tech. OMG apple, no cassette player, really? OMG apple no floppy drive?

If u really need an fm reciever they are very inexpensive, go buy one and stop bitching and whining.

You took the words from my mouth!

Some people here are missing many points.

- It HAS the hardware to do this, but it's locked down.

- Cell data burns through a battery (and data if on a limited plan)

- FM still has a very real role, especially in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.

just a note
just because the iPhone has an FM receiver doesn't mean it has the antennas to utilize it....

That's indeed a good point. I always listen to FM radio in my car, it has a 70cm antenna on the roof and it still needs several tuners to switch between frequencies all the time to get a good signal when on the move.

Now to everyone who says there's no need for FM because 3G is all you need:
I live in a strange continent called Europe, more specifically in a small country called The Netherlands. The iPhone is only sold by T-Mobile NL here, if I travel 40km (yes 40 not 400 or 4000) to the east I end up in Germany, where my iPhone will connect to T-Mobile DE (yes same company..). Suddenly my data is not free anymore but costs EUR 2 per MB, that's $2.50 for each MB I use. At that price internet radio really isn't an option...

No FM in 4.0 apple? really? why not juist activate bluetooth chip to do FM, i mean why not? its cabpable of it...

who else thinks we should have FM?

There are apps for that. There are plenty of radio station stream apps. And there is an app called FStream that will let you a lot of others.

In the age of gigabytes of storage for your own songs and streaming radio and music services like Last.fm, Spotify, Pandora etc. not to mention online radio streaming, who needs an FM radio, seriously?

In other news, Macs don't come with floppy drives either...

Do you know a way of listening to either Radio 5 live or Talksport on my iPhone, so I can listen to live commentary of the World Cup games, in the UK?

Turns out some people do need it.

geez- I'm as much of a fanboy as they come but it really irritates me when "i wish xx feature was included in ________" is answered with;

"Why would you want xx? xx is clearly useless. xx is outdated and stupid"

The question is, if the capability is there, why not enable it?

And yet, if it was included, they'd say the exact opposite. :)

FM radio along with the notification issue are the two main reasons I'm moving to Android. Streaming radio is okay, but if you find yourself at a sporting event and want to listen to commentary it's worthless as it will lag behind the action.

WunderRadio might help you out. It has bajillions of radio stations from all over the world, even from countries that you didn't even think had lectricity, much less radio stations. :D
