Nike +sportwatch definitely has GPS.
I guess, with AppleWatch tethered to iPhone (supposed use combination) you don't a separate module in AW but would be nice to have it

Tethered.

The horror. The horror. The horror.

What the horror.
I run with iPhone and have all GPS in it.
I can run with AppleWatch just fine and have all music in it.
GPS can be in iPhone if you need it so much.
Or you can spend 15 minutes of your life without GPS.
How were you born without GPS, horror, horror

AppleWatch 'Sport' doesn't have GPS, today, in 2014.

I can feel you dying a little every time I write that.

No clue what you're trying to say in your posts by the way.

I know that you have no clue since you don't seem to be too smart. Let me lay it out to you one more time:
The technology marvels that you claimed Apple need to catch up, where are they now?
Oh, I know where they are. The same place all the POSs are.

GPS or no GPS, I'll buy what serve my purpose. I'll wait for the release, read the reviews, then decide. The same I do with everything I bought.

Do you die a little inside every time the gadget don't have what you're looking for? How old are you? 12?

lol.

Just leave your useless AppleWatch at home. Your phone has music, GPS, Zombies etc. The bulky retro AppleWatch is unnecessary weight.

We're not talking about life without GPS. This thread is called, 'Fail for runners'.

I know where Apple is now.

Releasing a 'sports' edition AppleWatch without GPS in the year 2014.

And when it has GPS next year you'll hang yourself out of misery? People will buy what suit them. Strange people like you who made comments on product you don't care about is more pathetic than a small wearable computer that need to save battery.

I was looking forward to running without the phone. So that's a little disappointing. But if I can look down at my watch and see pace or distance then I'll survive.

If I was smart I would hold off until the 2nd gen. It may have GPS by then. I would pay extra for GPS apple watch or if it needed a data plan like an ipad. My phone is with me all the time anyway so until then I don't think it's enough to prevent me from buying it.

Forgetting about the Apple toywatch.. even the top end GPS watches are notoriously bad for pace accuracy. Check out fellrunr for tests on it. If you want pace, then the best combination on the market is a Fenix 2 + footpod (98% acc).

Whatever you'll be getting in terms of pace from Apple's handset/watch would be on par with making up random numbers in your head.

If it has GPS next year I'd take it seriously and give it a fair shot, as I did when Samsung brought out their latest Gear S. I spent a long time laughing at their toywatches. They nearly did something right this time round.

I care about sports watches as I'm always searching for the holy grail (a simple combo of things people who do sports want in 1 device). It's a joke among people who actually spend a lot of time cycling/running/mountaineering/trekking etc that there isn't a single watch on the market that has GPS, optical HRM, ANT+, MP3, BT LE and is waterproof (and can upload to 3rd party sites like Strava etc).

Many have came close, some with even very nice battery life, but none nailed it yet. Apple have finally staked their claim, and it's so tragically bad that even the most pessimistic didn't predict how tragic it was going to be.

Motorola nearly had it in 2011/2012 with the MOTOACTV, then came back with the 360, which is hilariously bad. As if the engineering team developed collective amnesia, or more likely have been replaced since the groundbreaking MOTOACTV was released.

GPS would've been nice but definitely not a dealbreaker for me because I don't mind wearing an arm band when I run.

My biggest problem with using the armband though is changing the music/volume, and accurate start/stop on map my run due to having to reach over to the side of my arm. It really slows me down and is annoying so having the watch as a remote would be a huge help.

Yeah, I'm already running with my phone in an arm band. If the watch pairs well enough for start/stop, and is also water resistant that might be enough of a benefit for me.

Auto start/stop and volume on earphones..

We've had this for years, even with Apple products.

Ayr, i think you are better than this Apple Watch,
Start your own company, make that universal watch and use it yourself and you will be happy.

I have ProTrek casio with triple weather sensors for trips, also G-Shock for activities (mind you that POS hard to see the light), GPS in iPhone, and while I do think you have good point, there is not a single watch with all those functions.
So far as the AW has music and bluetooth (with all possible expansion including pocket GPS receiver or even wireless radio of sorts), I am fine with the first iteration. It already does more than my ProTrek though it also misses some its functions as well.

350$ which translates more in euros is too much for me for a start stop and volume button. I expect more.

It's a shame there's no GPS, but as long as the likes of Runkeeper has a watch app that means I don't have to touch my phone to start and stop runs, then it's a step forward. A small one, but a step forward.

I was holding on for my nike watch purchase for the AW. Now i think i will wait for it to see some reviews. What do you think is the downside of nike gps watch against the mythical apple watch (of course for running purposes)? Would anyone advice me buying nike now? Thanks.

Buy a real watch. What's with the toy choices. Suunto, Timex and Garmin are the real players here.

What's your budget? Fenix 2 is the best looking watch on the market if you have the cash. Some early modules are a bit buggy but patches and replacements have been solving that.

I am a keen runner and have been for a number of years. Why do people feel the need to carry around all this equipment on a run? reality is all you need is a sports watch that has a stop watch feature. I sometimes listen to music but an iPod shuffle is far better fit for this activity than carrying around a phone, especially so when you consider the size of the iPhone 6 and 6 plus.

Believe it or not, a hell of a lot of pro runners eschew heart rate monitors, GPS and all the rest of that rubbish. Sure, their coaches might ask them to strap on a heart rate monitor once or twice a week to monitor progress on a set workout or in the morning to gauge if they are overtrained but thats about it.

I could tell you with a reasonable degree of accuracy what my HR was at any point on my run just be perceived effort and my rate of breathing. Most other experienced runners could do the same.

Time and distance are the most important metrics and you don't need a lot of equipment to measure them - that 400m track and 10km tempo route is not going to change day to day.

All this technology and equipment can really hamper peoples efforts to get in shape because it adds so much unneeded complexity. People get to the point where they won't go for a workout unless they have a fully charged phone, network access, ear buds, arms strap, fanny bag, salt tablets, pre-workout supplement, gel sachets, gps watch, 2 water bottles, sweat band, friction free socks, sorbothane insoles, motion control shoes etc etc etc.

Running has evolved way past anything you're touching on.

Trying going for an ultra or an off-trail or mountain run with 'just a stopwatch', and you'll end up in a helicopter with a bunch of rescue guys cussing you for behind a bellend (check out MRT FB pages for such laughs).

A GPS watch isn't just there to record, it's there to guide. You definitely aren't into those types of sports if you're making posts like yours, and you certainly shouldn't be talking with a definitive tone in that case.

Ever heard of a map and compass? they used to be quite popular at one time when people did those sort of events. You are talking about niche events: anyone doing them should be very confident in using a map and compass. The guy relying on a GPS is the one who is being stupid.

Most people who run don't go off exploring the wilderness though do they? they go round the local park!

So there is no built in GPS?

To map my run I have to run with my phone and my watch??

Annoying but there are costs with adding more radios. Sounds like the battery life won't be good to begin with. Not with driving a retina screen and all the other radios, like BTLE.

I already run with my phone in an armband, so that's not a big deal. What will be nice is glance able progress - which when the phone is on my arm, I can't see without straining to get my arm around and look at it.

Map and compass is essential for entering events over here. You'll be supplied with one.

Doesn't mean people run around looking at them the whole race :D

It's not an either/or game. Again, shows you're not in touch with the currently growing sports scenes and the needs of participants.

The Garmin Forerunner 620 is billed with 10 hours battery life, and it doesn't has any of the featured the Apple Watch has, and the screen is very battery friendly. IT just isn't enough.

The Garmin Edge models are billed with up to 18 hours and they would already be to large to use as a watch.

I have a 705 and it feel similar heavy to my iPhone 4, so having that in a back pocket is a similar option to lugging the phone around.

As a 620 owner we get lots of running dynamics the Apple Watch won't have.;);)

With no doppler radar built in, the Apple Watch will be useless for pitching coaches.
With no laser range finder built in, the Apple Watch will be useless for golfers.
With no tachometer built in, the Apple Watch will be useless for tuning model airplane engines.

From what you described, once initial data is collected by AW, either iPhone or AW can make easily that kind of nice graphs and analysis. Its just matter of apps.
As I understand, with at least 4 different sensors, the AW could be good in collecting data. With its small screen, the analysis results display will be limited but once tethered to larger display (mac, iphone, ipad), pretty and glorious graphs can be drawn :)
