Thanks for that helpful argument! It really helped prove your point! Now, I think I'm against having a central push app!

Geeeeeeeeeezzz... what's next, signature bashing? Avatar bashing? Maybe font bashing? It's not like it was "hard to read" or "understand".

Don't get mad when people make valid points!

Personally, I couldn’t imagine having more than a handful of apps that have push notification because it would defeat the purpose if you’re run is constantly dinging as new messages come in every minute or so. In saying that, with a few applications, I don’t think it’s a big sacrifice to put those in perhaps the first one or two pages of your phone. Plus, as someone else pointed out, the new spotlight feature may enable searching based on alerts or alert content.
That is great for you.

But I already have 10 apps I could see doing push notifications.

And I don't want but about four of them on page one.

Really, the bottom line is, Apple needs to make the push notification system far better than it is going to be. I think they will and it will probably just take time.

And the search thing was just an idea, not something that is even a rumored as happening.

Wow, that would make no sense. Every single push notification on one app, lol.

Why not? It would actually be nice to have in addition to what it is now (until they do away with this pop-up system for good, at least).

As of right now when you dismiss a pop-up, receive more than one before dismissing, or receive multiple alerts while on the lock screen, the content is lost forever. It could be nice to have an app where all the notifications are available for viewing even if you have dismissed them. When you select one notification it can open up the app it came from.

It's like visual voicemail for notifications.

I agree with your point, but I also agree with the paragraphs statement
Paragraphs make reading much easier for everyone, and helps keep the thread interesting. It's not an attack at you, people just like to see things that are in paragraphs, so they can pull the relevant information out of your post more easily

When I saw push was coming I was pleased; when I saw that horrible yellow face of push I was worried I'd have to have the lamest looking icon on my screen for push.

For arguments sake, let's say you have those 10 apps running on iPhone. Wouldn't you find it annoying to hear a ding sound every few minutes and/or seconds as you get a new instant message, a sports score, etc?

I don't want pop ups in the middle of my games.

That is horrible implementation, period.

I wouldn't call it horrible. I think Apple did a great job with Push Apps, but having a central push app (It doesn't have to be a Happy Face, BTW) would be the icing on the cake! Making it a perfect addition to the already truly amazing iPhone!

Hopefully Apple will at least consider it!

Well, I'm sure if there was a central push app, he'd turn off the pop-ups and sounds. He'd just check the CPA (that's what I'm calling it now) whenever he done.

In that case though, why would you need alerts? At that rate, you could receive e-mail or text message alerts without having to use a push notification system.

Yes, it would be annoying. I doubt I use the pop ups OR sounds for a lot of the apps that do the pushing. Only the real important ones.

Hypothetical situation:

I just landed and got off a plane after four hour flight to California. As we sit right now, I am going to have scroll through all my pages of apps and look at all ten apps to see if I got a notification.

I mean, what part of that DOESN'T sound like total crap implementation and functionality?

Why not be able to go under one app and see all the notifications with a brief snip, and when you click it, it opens the item in it's native app. To me, this would kick butt and would be so superior to how it is going to be right now. I mean, what would REALLY kick butt is a notification system like the PRE has, but I think that would be much harder for Apple to implement with all the games already programmed for full screen.

I honestly can't figure out why people are saying this is not a good idea. I have yet to see any real reason. Honestly, even if you hate this idea, something should be done.

While they're at it... make the pop up notifications un-intrusive.
That would be the best thing.

But like I said above, with so many games programmed for full screen, that is going to be hard to do IMHO.

I'm excited for push notifications in 3.0, but hate the idea I'll have to swipe from page to page so see if anything has a badge icon (I don't plan on using popups or sounds).

My guess is that Apple is working on a way to unify notifications, and will release it in a subsequent update. Looking at how long it has taken to get copy & paste, mms, etc, we could be waiting a while.

The idea in the OP about an app to centralize notifications would be a very useful, albeit temporary solution to a built in notification unification solution at the OS level. If a third party app comes out with the functionality to aggregate notifications into one icon with shortcuts to the respective app, I would gladly pay for it.
