Nice...

“iOS 25 Season 2 better come with a recap. I forgot what happened in the last update.”
“iOS 25 Part 2 dropping soon. Hopefully, no filler episodes this time.”
“Apple’s moving to yearly titles? Cool. Waiting for the iOS 25 Director’s Cut.”
“iOS 25 Season 2: same characters, new glitches.”

Well, that's a good 40 mins of the WWDC agenda already taken up. The excitement is palpable already.

So, are they going to drop these every January from now on? Otherwise, you'll have iOS 26 in October 2025. Maybe look at it as setting a clear marker NOT to upgrade throughout Q4 of the previous calendar year to allow all the debugging in time for the numbers to sync. Upgrade to iOS 26 only in 2026, etc.

A very real possibility, that I’m not sure anyone has mentioned, is that Apple is going to align the version of each os with the version of Darwin which is the underlying Unix System that is at the core of all of their products. Darwin versions started following the year around version 10 or 11. The current version is Darwin 24, released with all the updates last year.

Hold on, it mentions macOS to also follow this convention???

So, after exhausting the major feline species, have Apple finally run out of tenuous California-related geographical and botanical names?

Did we not learn how well it worked for others? Windows 95, 98, Milenium, ---> Windows 7,8,10 and now Windows 11

The good old days *sigh*...

Software and marketing department at Apple is not only doing an awful job at good releases, seems they’ve lost their mind at the naming, as well.

People are going to keep thinking Samsung galaxy phones with that kind of numbering. Well done, Apple software and marketing! Giving the competitors all the help in the world 👏

Calling it 26 will magically get rid of all the bugs that would have been introduced in 19 - 25 :).
Only if they really rebuilt the entire system from the ground up. If it doesn’t happen now with the switch to Apple Silicon only macs, the unified design, and the UI refresh, along with the huge number change, honestly, I don’t know when it could happen.

It seems so. I mean there still are quite a few cool names for macOS such as Skyline, Pacific or Redwood.

But I think it’s just simpler. It would lack a “theme” for the wallpaper and screensavers. Other than that, I think it’s more practical to say macOS ‘26 iOS ‘26 and iPadOS ‘26 (and watchOS ‘26, tvOS ‘26, and visionOS ‘26)
