Pattern

Apple has now set a clear pattern for their iOS device offerings. To add to what a poster said, You can see it in their current line up of A5-A6-A7 devices (with support for iOS 7 for iPhone 4).

By next year you will see their products bumped up to A6-A7-A8 lineup with support of iOS 8 for A5 devices. I'll bet iOS 8 will be the EOL software for A5 devices.

iPod touch 6th gen will pick up from there and enjoy 2 more update cycle just like what iPod touch 5 is enjoying.

iPod touch 5 - iOS 6 (initial), 7, 8
iPod touch 6 - iOS 8 (initial), 9, at most, 10.

This is speculative but I like speculating.

Exactly! This is what I've been trying to explain but some people just don't get it. They expect their VCRs to play 4K video too and blame big corporations for not letting it happen.

A lot of apps still work with iOS 5, let alone 6. You'll still be ok as far as apps go for a while but don't expect performance to be top notch.

Its all about 1 thing, and 1 thing only: Money. Apple is basically telling you to "shell out for a new iPod if you want iOS 7."

Talk about the misinformed and uneducated
If you have ever owned or used an iTouch 4, you will know how it struggles/lags massively with ios6. I doubt it would have been able to handle ios7. I use mine everyday and it seriously is bad on ios6.

As someone here said, it would not compliment the smooth user interface experience that Apple aims for. I own an iTouch4 and am glad they didn't include the upgrade. The lag is so bad, I sometimes think it will crash on me permanently.

It's an iPod Touch, not a iTouch dammit ><

You know Apple could release the 6 in October with iPads, Thats what i think. They should update it with a dual core A6 or maybe even the A7 to make more devices 64-bit. Also i hope they give us touch users the slo mo and burst since apple couldnt stop saying last year how much people love to take photos on the touch.

iTouch4? Are we just making up names now? And you call me uneducated.

When a company discontinues support for a product FOUR months after being sold in stores, it is pure GREED. If it already lags on iOS 6, then who the heIl cares if it lags running iOS 7. You're already used to it. Dumb it down, take out some animations, whatever needs to be done to let it run. But don't screw over the customer who bought from you just four months ago.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there won't be a new iPod touch this year. You can bank on that. Not sure what makes you think there will be when all the signs (ie. discontinued slate colour and introduction of space grey) and patterns (ie. no refresh on iPhone 'S' release years) point to it not happening.

Of course this is all speculation, but at least it's the most accurate kind of speculation.

As for your comment regarding the iPod Touch 4G being out for 4 months, please review your understanding of release dates and business in general. The iPod Touch 4G has been out since September 9, 2010. Why did you buy one 2 years late? It's not like a car that just works the same as a new one in that it has wheels that work on flat surfaces. It's a computing device. Did you think it was going to support 4K HD video and Wifi 802.11ac too? Sorry, old technology is old. They still sell DVD players. You think if you buy one it will support Blu-ray or Netflix? One thing is to be unreasonable and the other to be just plain stupid.

My friend, my advice to you eveytime you buy something:
1) do research online to see if a newer model is coming out,
2) check the original release date of that model,
3) study (ie. take a quick glance) at the product refresh rate from the manufacturer.
These tips will tell you if it's a good buy in terms of obsolescence. All these steps take a maximum of an hour. If the average price of an iPod Touch is $300, and you make more than $300/hour, then I understand if it's not worth your time.

Another tip I suggest is to take the cost of your product and divide by how many years you expect to use it given it's current state. If you feel that per year cost is too high, walk out of the store with your head held high. Anyone complaining about the price of these devices should understand that your $300 iPod touch, will cost you $13/month before being deemed 'obsolete' if purchased at launch. Mind you, your device will still magically work after it is 'obsolete', but if you must put an expiration date on your purchase, write down 2 years on the box. Surprised people don't realize this yet. #firstworldproblems

I'll chime in here and say that I agree with many of the posters, that the issue is not that the iPod touch 4th cannot run iOS 7, it is that Apple continued to sell the 4th gen alongside the 5th gen for so long. Apple should have discontinued the 4th gen and introduced the 8GB 5th gen for $229 here in the US when the 5th gen was launched. I expect the margins on the 4th gen were too good to pass up at the time...

I briefly worked at my local Target over the holidays last winter, and most parents looking for an iPod touch for their children for Xmas, ended up going for the cheaper 4th gen (I could not persuade them otherwise - everybody has a budget). The longevity of the device is not an immediate concern at the time of purchase, but you can believe their kids will be bugging them about iOS 7 now...

You really have to look at the total cost of ownership and estimated lifespan of the product.

Agreed. Apple really served some sour milk by letting the 16GB 4th gen sit out on the shelves after the 5th gen release.

Right, that makes absolute sense.

1. Apple is a FOR profit company, so yes they want money.
2. The 4th gen iPod Touch is worse in specs than the iPhone 4 which already has quite a few features cut from iOS 7.

It's a lot like what happened with the PowerPC/Intel transition: yes, the G4 and G5's had been out a while, but they were still selling them, not only *brand new* but as the best Apple had to offer, far too close to when support was dropped in new OS versions. Handhelds shouldn't be expected to last as long, but it's unreasonable to expect people who bought, a year ago, the best available in its line to appreciate being left out of software updates so soon no matter when the product was first available. It's when its *successor* became available that's relevant.

Having said that.... it works for me. I'll have 7 on my new phone, if and when it shows up, and still have 6 on the iPod, in case there are things it does better. (For example, I understand they're trying to completely separate podcasts from music; I keep a playlist alternating the two, both so I can more easily find my place and so I don't have to fiddle with the thing while driving when one program ends.)

Uh, I know it was first released in 2010. That doesn't mean that everyone buys it on release day. No matter when you buy it, either day 1 or day 750, as long as its still being sold BY APPLE, a consumer should expect that it will be supported for longer than FOUR months.

And what do even mean by "review your understanding of release dates and business in general?" *shrug*

2 years late? Again, not everyone needs to be an early adopter.

Sorry bro, I stopped reading once you started comparing DVD players that don't play blu-ray, as if its remotely similar.

No prob, bro. I tried.

Btw, after the PS4 and Xbox One come out, don't buy a PS3 or Xbox 360. Even though they will be still for sale, you will be disappointed by lack of new games. :(

Okay, I'm done. Go on blindly defending their bad business decisions. Some people just don't recognize a slap in the face.

I am really bloody angry at Apple! I bought an iPod touch 4th gen from Apple, then 2 weeks later they announced iOS 7... which isn't compatible. What an absolute waste of money! Especially as I bought it purely for development purposes. I wish there was something that could be done about this.

Sell it, buy an iPod touch 5th gen, move on, OR keep the 4th gen and use it for testing your apps on iOS 6. After all, there are millions of iPod touch 4th gens in the wild, and I'm going to assume that you do not want to develop iOS 7-only apps exclusively.

also hoping for an iPod Touch 6

I don't know if now is the time to buy an iPod Touch 5. It's already one year old. I see advice in this thread saying it was an unwise choice to buy an iPod Touch 4 two years after the release date.
I'm undecided if I should stick with my iPod Touch 4 until the next iPod Touch announcement or get an iPod Touch 5. The iPod Touch 4 is really slow with iOS 6.
I am at least going to wait until the new iPad announcements in October or November to see if by any chance a new iPod Touch is brought out of Apple's workshop at the same time.

The 5 will be a huge upgrade over the 4, and it runs iOS 7 acceptably, far, far better than the 4 ran iOS 6. First, it's a lot faster and has more memory so there's much less paging when you're switching between several apps. When they do have to be reloaded, iBooks, for example, loads in 5-10 seconds, whereas with the 4, it could be north of 20. The display is much higher quality WRT black levels and color; it really does look a lot better. It also has a great oleophobic coating. The coating was like magic to me, as I was always finding fingerprints to distort the image on the 4, but it is very rare for that to happen on the 5. The camera is also better, and of course it comes with a flash. The better camera with auto-focus allows things like bar code scanner apps to work on the 5.

Good idea. If they don't announce a new iPod, and you plan on continuing to use an iPod, stop torturing yourself with the 4 and get a 5. It's a night and day upgrade.

Yep, the 5 has a fingerprint resistant coating which is awesome! Also, I assume you have a touch 5 running iOS 7? How is battery life on it? My iPod touch 5 is still on 6.1.3 and it's purely a gaming device, on the 6 the battery can last around 4 hours max playing games with high-end graphics (Infinity Blade, Asphalt 8) but I find iOS 7 draining a lot faster on my nephew's iPhone 5; (just for reference I took note of how fast his battery was draining).

Appreciate your feedback, thank you, kind sir!

I've listed it repeatedly online and the best offer I've had is £50 which is pretty crap as I bought it for more than triple that! I wont be developing iOS 7 exclusive apps, but my new job does require we learn to use iOS 7 features.

Obviously I know I will have to take the plunge and buy a new device, but I think it's atrocious that Apple are allowed to get away this this; announcing the new software wont work on a device they sold me brand new 2 weeks earlier.

You are welcome. I don't do much gaming so can't comment on the battery life for that, but for Safari, Tapatalk, iBooks, Music, occasional videos, etc, I haven't noticed any change. I did turn off Bluetooth and Background App Refresh.

You bought a nearly three year old devise what did you thin was going to happen? Apple typically announces a new ios version every year. No one forced you to buy it. It was amazing that the 4th gen got as many updates as it got.
