You bought a nearly three year old devise what did you thin was going to happen? Apple typically announces a new ios version every year. No one forced you to buy it. It was amazing that the 4th gen got as many updates as it got.

It may have been 3 years since the release, but Apple were still selling it as a full-price, front of shop, new device in their shop.

iTouch4? Are we just making up names now? And you call me uneducated.

When a company discontinues support for a product FOUR months after being sold in stores, it is pure GREED. If it already lags on iOS 6, then who the heIl cares if it lags running iOS 7. You're already used to it. Dumb it down, take out some animations, whatever needs to be done to let it run. But don't screw over the customer who bought from you just four months ago.

If technology name picking will alleviate your unconscious mind, so be it ;)
Greed!? Last time I checked, it was the consumers choice to support a product and company. Before you make more misinformed decisions, remember what you are signing for and accepting. All the terms and conditions are online for those who don't know what they decided to purchase ;)

If you don't what what forum you are in, what product this is about and what iTouch 4 means, then I'm afraid it's back to ABC's for you
Maybe EyeTouch4 looks better to you :D:rolleyes:

Everyone chill. These guys think their voices will be heard by the fat cats in the big corporations, the same who sleep with the big bankers that are laughing about being the 1%. They need to understand that we can't change them, but we can change ourselves. We can change our buying habits and tell these corporations what we want, what is liked and what is disliked. They listen to our wallets, not our complaints. It's a money driven market. It's called capitalism.

I wasn't defending their business tactics, but explaining how they can do better to not make the same mistake again. Blame the rabid dog or learn to defend yourselves. Choice is yours. Maybe in the future you shouldn't be so enticed by their shiny gadgets like a moth to a flame.

lol... Watch their responses be like, "Didn't even read your response blah blah" or "That has nothing to do with he iPod touch blah blah". It's 2013. Stupids are the ones who bought the crappiest device on the store shelf based on price. #firstworldproblems

The iPod 4th gen was sold a a discounted price. The 16gb 4th gen released with a 229.99 price tag. I bet you looked at the 5th gen and just thought that was to much. Correct me if I am wrong. But that's what you gust when you buy last gen tech you lose out on newer features and maybe new software.

I looked at the coloured ones and did indeed think it was too much... as well as the screen being too tall for my thumbs to reach all over... as well as wanting the lowest spec device my apps would be available on so I could test performance. At no point did it say anywhere in the Apple store I was buying "last gen tech" - I asked to see the iPod touch and an employee showed me the range. I asked why this one was cheaper than the next and he said it had less storage and a smaller screen... nothing about it being last gen or it being outdated in 2 weeks time.

It's okay though because with a bit of saving, I will be able to buy a new device in 6-9 months.

Ridiculous.

iOS 7 is very well done and easy on the eyes even though I am not a fan of the font change. I've had a few dozen iTouch 4's in my hands the past few weeks and have found iOS7 to be quite laggy on the device. It takes away from the Apple fluidity I have come accustomed to.

If you are a perfectionist and want things to run perfectly, this would not be the best option for you!

Cheers!

The iPod Touch 4th Gen. only has 256mb RAM and doesn't run iOS7.

I'm baffled by people defending this move. The 4 was on the market WAY too long. It was outdated by the time it launched, and it should have been phased out in 2011 frankly, which would have given it 2 full years if you bought it at the end. Not the greatest, but by mobile standards...

But no, they didn't update it until 2012, and then continued selling it way past that.

Yes, power users realized it was a bad buy, and we all tried to convince people to buy the 5. That doesn't change that Apple chose to sell ancient hardware clear into the same year an unsupported OS release was hitting.

As a developer though, you must be at least slightly acquainted with the refresh cycle that Apple goes through? The way iOS 6 performs on the touch 4G (there are many threads about the lag etc.) there was absolutely no way it would be getting iOS 7.

If you were wanting to get a future proof dev device on a budget surely it was worth waiting for the September event to see what the new hardware was like? At minimum waiting for WWDC, as we knew there would be new iOS software and see what the compatibility was like? Being a game dev surely having a legacy device like a touch 4G is a good idea anyway, not many apps (especially games) are iOS 7 only, so having an iOS 6 device around is pretty useful for testing on a slower performing device!! Buying 3 year old hardware for a developer device in such a quickly changing industry was never going to go well.

Lol, so basically you're saying apple should make the OS experience worse than it is now, just for the sake of numbers? You've got to be kidding me.

For the Love of Jobs

Guys. No one is defending Apple's cash-grab reasoning for leaving obsolete products on store shelves. We are just telling you how you can recover from being scammed, not to be fooled again, and kinda how you should have known better if you were in any way a tech enthusiast.

All companies point their guns at the least informed consumer. That's where they make their most money. By leaving the iPod touch 4 on store shelves, they convinced grandparents, parents and children alike to purchase the "same" product at a *gasp* cheaper price!

If you bought one, sell it at a loss and move on. Join us a year from now to berate those who will buy the 5th gen upon the release of the 6th gen. And please, by all means, give your feedback to Apple to change their ways. #firstworldproblems

Not "for the sake of numbers" whatever that means. For the sake of the people who bought the thing and depending on what they use it for, may have gotten only a few months of use out of it. That's obscene.

The iPhone 4 already runs the same hardware, save that it has 2x the RAM. It already has things stripped out of iOS 7 (actually so do the dual core A9 iOS devices).

If nothing else, keep going iOS 6, but provide a couple years of security updates for it.

Yep, the 5 has a fingerprint resistant coating which is awesome! Also, I assume you have a touch 5 running iOS 7? How is battery life on it? My iPod touch 5 is still on 6.1.3 and it's purely a gaming device, on the 6 the battery can last around 4 hours max playing games with high-end graphics (Infinity Blade, Asphalt 8) but I find iOS 7 draining a lot faster on my nephew's iPhone 5; (just for reference I took note of how fast his battery was draining).

Appreciate your feedback, thank you, kind sir!

For me, turning off parallax and transparency SIGNIFICANTLY raised my battery life. I also turned off background app refreshing.

Whoa, really? Parallax is just that effect where if you're on the home screen and tile it around, the background moves? I don't care about that, might prefer it static, and would certainly prefer more battery life!

You can disable transparency too? Is that in accessibility too? I guess that's taxing the GPU more?

That I'd argue is actually a bit of a functionality issue, but still...

I've got background refresh shut off for most programs, though have it on for TomTom (I assume it doesn't matter anyway unless I'm actually running TomTom-I always just manually quit it when I'm done.

Could help IM clients if I used any on iOS.

I noticed that the battery on my touch was draining horribly when I updated to iOS 7. I was only getting about 2 hours on a charge. Then I noticed that my screen brightness was turned up to 100 %. I usually have it set to about 40%, so I switched it back and my battery life has improved significantly. Its now the same as it was on ios 6.

I'm not sure if it's Parallax or the transparency, or even both, but I don't really mind it off. It's kind of like iOS 6 in using it this way You can disable transparency under "Increase Contrast".

That's also a factor, but for me, my brightness is turned down to about 20-30% anyway. I still had lots of battery problems.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot, parallax for sure since I don't care about it.

I'm not too impressed with my 5s' battery life so far, though it may not be bad for a smart phone. Heck, I've never been impressed by my iPad 2's battery life, and people act like it's amazing.

I'd really like to be able to use a device heavily for 24 hours straight if need be, THEN I'll be impressed. Barely touch my 5s and just using some features here and there and maybe 30 minutes of calls and I got down to 50% yesterday. Won't be as bad once I have my docks in from Apple so I can have it charging the whole time at work, but still.

I've turned off updating for all my email accounts, as I'm rarely going to check them on there, and when I do I can just load the program to look. BUT I can't disable Gmail, as it's my calendar too, and I would like the calendar to sync.

I notice Google's stuff is "fetch", not "push". Maybe I should create two entries in there for Google, one for email, one for calendar, so I can have email off while calendar's on... or maybe I should switch my calendar to iCloud or Outlook.com, as they support Push which might be more efficient.

Be a bit of a pain to switch.

Hmm, looks like the Windows iCloud control panel finally adds more features...I need to play with that.

Not sure if you can export calendar directly from iCloud.

That was my thought, some support for at least another year or two after being phased out. Either through ios6 updates, or there's no reason why a cut down ios7 couldn't have been done, the iPhone and iPod download a completely different upgrade package anyway.

okay, now it's time for you to stop. Hardware doesn't implode or stop working if it doesn't receive ios 7. And iOS 7 is ram hungry - it needs the extra 256MB.

As I already reference, in a manner of speaking it DOES quit working. The iPod 4 is no longer safe to use on the internet, because it no longer gets security updates-potentially just months after someone bought one.

Now depending on what you do with it this may not matter. Some people may use it exclusively for music or podcasts or video transfer from a computer. For that matter, it's probably safe to stream Netflix or the like if you're on a secure network.

But email? Web browsing? These are real things people do with these devices, potentially, and it's no longer safe to use it for that.

Because you didn't get shiny new icons? What???

There are 0 unpatched userland-exclusive (you can run them in your web browser, without plugging the device in and running specific jailbreak programs) vulnerabilities for iOSes dating as far back as 4.2.1 --- and it's pretty safe to say that if one ever came out again, an update would patch it, even if a newer iOS came out. (see iOS 4.2 on iPhone 3G)
